approach to translator training and considers its effectiveness in helping to
develop a learning environment where static word-for-word equivalence in
meaning between target and source text is replaced by a dynamic notion of
chunk-by-chunk equivalence in use. The author argues that, far from being a
drawback, the different levels of adequacy represented by the target texts in the
corpus can be used in the classroom to enhance translation criticism. Moreover,
parallel corpora can be used to provide the students with useful insights into the
practices of the translation industry, including the ability to revise the
translation of a fellow translator. By way of exemplification, the different
translations into Italian of the multi-functional item -ing form are investigated

No full textThis translators' preface to the English translation of the Italian Code of Criminal Procedure illustrates the main methodological choices that had to made by the interdisciplinary team of the translation project before the beginning of the translation activity. These included: the national variety of English and the composition of the reference corpus; the "directionality" of the translation; the work methodology in order to harmonise the style of the two translators and maximise the contribution of the legal experts on the team and the native-English reviser; the general translation approach to be followed during the translation activity; the specific choices made at the levels of terminology and phraseology

Full text linkAfter a brief introduction on the importance of pragmatics in the translation of scientific and technical (sci-tech) texts, which are service texts that are written in a language for special purposes (LSP) in the context of scientific and technological disciplines and are directed to a more or less restricted target discursive community having very specific practical needs and expectations, the concept of ‘pragmatic equivalence’ will be introduced with specific reference to sci-tech translation. Having in mind translation as a professional service activity, the article will deal with the main pragmatic factors exerting a determining influence at the textual and terminological levels of sci-tech texts, which should also inform translation decisions in order to achieve pragmatic equivalence at these levels. These pragmatic factors are ‘situationality’ (i.e. external situational and cultural factors), on the one hand, and ‘intentionality’ of the ST author and ‘acceptability’ of the TT by its final readers (i.e. internal cognitive factors), on the other. The last part of the article contains some examples of pragmatic choices made by sci-tech translators illustrating instances of the translation strategies that have been adopted to achieve pragmatic equivalence at the different textual levels

No full textIl volume intende rappresentare uno strumento completo di orientamento sullo "stato dell'arte" delle metodologie di traduzione tecnico-scientifica, ma anche a fornire un valido supporto per la didattica e la prassi della traduzione. Nell'approccio proposto l'enfasi è posta sugli aspetti professionali della traduzione e sul ruolo del traduttore come esperto delle norme di scrittura dei testi tecnico-scientifici sia nella lingua di partenza sia nella lingua di arrivo. A due capitoli iniziali incentrati sulle lingue speciali - dimensioni di variazioni e aspetti macro- e microlinguistici - segue il capitolo 3 sui caratteri generali della traduzione e sulla preparazione dell'attività traduttiva, mentre il capitolo 4 è dedicato alla produzione della traduzione, ossia alla fase dell'effettiva riformulazione da una lingua all’altra. Gli ultimi tre capitoli riguardano infine la qualità in traduzione, la competenza del traduttore e gli aspetti professionali della traduzione
