Introduction
The 'Introduction' is a presentation of the book that collects the contributions presented at the international congress held at the University of Bologna in January 2007, where leading scholars of different persuasions and interests offered an up-to-date overview of the current status of the research on linguistic universals. Each contribution is briefly presented and framed in its speficic domain and in the broader debate concerning generative-formal vs. functional-typological approaches to the exploration of unity and diversity in the realm of languages
Classification Issues for Chinese Compound Neologisms
Compounds have received much attention in recent years; several proposals for classification have been put forth in the international literature. This article, developed within the Morbo/comp project on compounds, aims at contributing to a widening of the debate on the classification of Chinese compounds and their internal structure initiated by Ceccagno and Scalise (2006). To this end, we briefly introduce the existing classifications put forth by different scholars for compounds and in particular we will focus on the approaches proposed for Chinese compounding.
We then discuss how to apply to Chinese the classification for compounds argued for by Bisetto and Scalise (2005). After highlighting some shortcomings of this classification with respect to Chinese compounds, we propose a refinement of it through a new definition of the three macro-types proposed by the two authors.
We present a new table of Chinese compounds based on an analysis of a corpus of neologisms
Romance compounds
The special issue offers an up-to-date, critical description of Romance compounds. The papers are theoretically aware and discuss various crucial issues for morphological theory. Authors have been asked to follow a scheme of issues to be addressed, for the sake of homogeneity and comparability.
The issue is made of seven papers, each of which is devoted to a specific language: Catalan (by Elisenda Bernal), French (by Florence Villoing), Italian (by Francesca Masini & Sergio Scalise), Latin (by Luisa Brucale), Portuguese (by Graça Rio-Torto & Sílvia Ribeiro), Romanian (by Maria Grossmann) and Spanish (by Emiliano R. Guevara).
The issue is a product of the following projects on compounding coordinated by Sergio Scalise in the last years, namely: Morbo/Comp, funded by the Department of Foreign Modern Languages and Literatures of the University of Bologna, and CompoNet, a PRIN project funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR)
TOPICS IN MORPHOLOGY: Selected Papers from the Third Mediterranean Morphology Meeting, Barcelona september 20-22, 2001
This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the Third Mediterranean Morphology Meeting, which was held at the Institut Universitari de Lingüística Aplicada of Pompeu Fabra University. This conference series was initiated some years ago by Geert Booij (Free University of Amsterdam), Angela Ralli (University of Patras) and Sergio Scalise (University of Bologna) in order to bring scholars together from around the world in a Mediterranean setting to discuss issues of morphological structure bearing on linguistic theory. The Institut Universitari de Lingüística Aplicada was pleased to be host to morphologists from Europe, North America and South America for MMM3 in September, 2001.
The main topics of the papers included in this volume are the borderline between syntax and morphology and the role of prosodic constraints in morphology
