No full textAmong the most widespread locally-made vase shapes in pre-Roman southern Italy, there is a distinctive type known in literature under different names (olla, olletta, olletta-kantharos, cantharos, cantharoid vase, anforetta, nestoris). This shape and its variants are most common in the so-called “northern Lucanian” area. In the present paper, the whole range of cantharoid vases, regardless of differences in size, profile and decoration is analyzed, in order to look at this shape from a fresh perspective, to shed light on the development of its profile over time, and, above all, to gain a better understanding of its function. A new typological classification is proposed on the basis of a systematic study of the grave-goods of the necropolis of Ruvo del Monte (Potenza), which represents an excellent term of comparison for other northern Lucanian centers. in shape and decoration can be traced to different local workshops influenced by the geographical and cultural proximity of groups using different decorative repertoires. Further, the size of cantharoid vases and the fact that it is mainly found in funerary contexts calls for new hypotheses about its function
Amphorae from Vigna Marini-Vitalini, Caere, Italy
No full textFrom 2012 the Queen's University of Kingston (Ontario, Canada) carries out the archeological excavation of Vigna Marini Vitalini, in a central area of the plateau of the Etruscan and Roman city of Caere, 35 km N of Rome. The stratigraphic sequence spans from the Early Iron Age to the modern occupation, but the most significant evidence dates to the period between the 3rd century B.C. - when the Etruscan city was incorporated into the Roman State - and the 1st century AD. In this paper a preliminary picture of the development of the trade networks of the site between the Middle Republic and the Roman Imperial Period will be outlined based on the amphoras found at Vigna Marini Vitalini. The evidence from the site will be put in the broader contest of the coast and the hinterland of central Tyrrhenian Italy

No full textDuring recent excavations, a small number of “matt-painted” pottery fragments were found at Caere in Southern Etruria. The finds belong to a class of Subgeometric pottery produced in Northern Lucania. So far, this pottery has never been found outside Southern Italy. The present paper aims to reconsider finds of South Italian indigenous pottery in Etruria, in order to compare the data with the distribution of Etruscan imports in Southern Italy. While in the Early Iron Age, Tarquinia seems to have played a leading role in the exchange with “Oinotrian” groups settling in Southern Italy, from the 7th century onwards, archaeological finds point to contacts between Caere and Northern Lucania as well as Daunia
