The Way of St. James in Religious Tourism Research
The Camino de Santiago as a tourist and cultural phenomenon has grown exponentially in recent decades. This route, of medieval origin, began to receive general attention in the second half of the 20th century. This interest manifested itself almost in parallel in two interconnected areas. On the one hand, there is the revival of traditional pilgrimages, i.e. on foot or by non-mechanised means of transport. On the other hand, the Way of St. James has become an object of attention in research, initially with a historical and artistic focus, but as time goes by, a tourist perspective is incorporated into the increasingly important field of relations between tourism and religion.
The value of this article, which is not strictly research, lies in the fact that it brings together and collates all scientific production, in book or journal article format, which deals with the relationship between tourism and the Pilgrims’ Route to Santiago de Compostela. It is, therefore, a very useful tool for researchers who will find in one article a large volume of texts on this subject. From the methodological point of view, a search has been carried out which, in the case of books, has focused mainly on those publishers with specific collections of tourism studies. However, the greatest effort has been focused on journals, with the analysis of those with the highest impact factor. Although tourism journals have occupied a relevant place in this research, we have also analysed others, including those related to religious studies, geography or sociology. The final result is materialised in an appendix which includes the complete record, including the DOI or url for better location, of 180 texts. The content of these texts allows us to verify the international relevance of the Way of St. James in tourism and religious studies and the transversality and complexity of the Jacobean phenomenon
Scene Wireframes Sketching for Drones
The increasing use of autonomous UAVs inside buildings and around human-made structures demands new accurate and comprehensive representation of their operation environments. Most of the 3D scene abstraction methods use invariant feature point matching, nevertheless some sparse 3D point clouds do not concisely represent the structure of the environment. Likewise, line clouds constructed by short and redundant segments with inaccurate directions limit the understanding of scenes as those that include environments with poor texture, or whose texture resembles a repetitive pattern. The presented approach is based on observation and representation models using the straight line segments, whose resemble the limits of an urban indoor or outdoor environment. The goal of the work is to get a full method based on the matching of lines that provides a complementary approach to state-of-the-art methods when facing 3D scene representation of poor texture environments for future autonomous UAV
Imperfect competition in the fresh tomato industry
In this paper, we analyse the market power of the retail industry in the French tomato market. Following the methods developed in the New Empirical Industrial Organization, we develop a structural model of this industry. The analysis is based on detailed data on final consumption and prices at both shipper and consumer levels for two types of tomatoes in France. The structural model is composed of a system of demand equations, supply equations and pricing equations which include terms which capture the oligopoly and oligopsony power of the retail sector. We show that i) elasticity of demand varies during the year ii) the retail sector exercise only a ‘moderate’ market power iii) the exercise of market power decreases over time iv) If markets were competitive, in the case of tomato ‘ronde’ retail price would decrease by about 1.2% to 4.5% depending on the year; v) In absence of market power, shipping price might be 6% to 24% higher than observed. We find higher distortions in the case of tomato ‘grappe’. We also find that the distortions tend to decrease over time. We conclude to a moderate exercise of market power of the retail sector in the French tomato market.Oligopoly, Oligopsony, Fresh products, Industrial Organization,
Host Communities and Pilgrimage Tourism: Asia and Beyond
This book delves into topics on pilgrimage travel and communities from a variety of perspectives through academic research based on the Middle East, Northeast Asia, the Indian subcontinent, and Europe, where sacred sites have become of great importance for both international and domestic tourism. In particular, Europe and Asia possess a high volume of world-renowned pilgrimage sites that are currently being developed as tourism destinations in their respective countries, such as Santiago de Compostela (Spain), Lourdes (France), and Koyasan (Japan). This book includes studies on these two continents that harbor both a great history of pilgrimage tradition, as well as tourism development related to religious travel.
The book importantly covers the role of the community in religious tourism, as well as the impact on the locals, which is comparatively an unexplored area. Whilst pilgrimage is seen as an effective tool to revitalize local economies, this book also reveals the different challenges to achieving this goal. Realizing the importance of the interrelationship of community and pilgrimage travel, as well as the lack of studies on it, this book seeks to address this research gap through 14 chapters divided into two parts, ‘Communities and Constestation’ and ‘Pilgrimage Shaping Communities’. To ensure diverse perspectives, case studies from different Eurasian countries, written by authors with expertise in the study of pilgrimage and religious travel, are included. Readers can expect to gain new perspectives by having a deeper comprehension of the ‘community side‘ of pilgrimage travel in Eurasia, and thus an integral understanding of contemporary pilgrimage

Social Preferences for Management of Rural Forests in the Iberian Atlantic Region
This article presents results from an experiment into attribute perception and relevant levels for management of woodland and mountain areas typical of the Iberian Peninsula's Atlantic region. The aim, which the authors argue has been robustly reached, was to identify those aspects of forestry policy clearly perceived by citizens. This is useful for defining enlargement of areas protected under Natura 2000 Network. Results show clear preference for an increase in woodland to over half the current surface area, with replanting of traditional trees, in woodlands of low density and trees of different age and, preferably in irregular shaped plots.Landscape preference, Visual quality, Non-market goods, Preference models, Economic valuation, Landscape Management, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,
Avaliaçao de políticas públicas de turismo. Uma análise de contextos transnacionais (Brasil e Espanha) utilizando modelos de equaçoes estructurais
The study evaluated the adequacy of the Tourism Public Policy Assessment Scale (APPT) in transnational contexts (Brazil and Spain), verifying whether the theoretical structure of the constructs adequately reflects local realities and confirms the contribution of the PRODETUR and LEADER programs to sustainable development and the improvement of residents’ quality of life. Structured questionnaires were applied in both countries, and the data were analyzed through Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), complemented by confirmatory factor analyses. The results indicated an adequate model fit and significant relationships (p < 0.05) among the tested constructs. Strong relationships were observed between social participation and the effectiveness of public policies (f² = 0.333–0.319) and between quality of life and job creation (f² = 0.435–0.371), demonstrating that community involvement is a determining factor for the success of tourism policies. In the Spanish context, the LEADER Initiative showed a significant impact on trust and awareness of policy impacts (f² = 0.316), reinforcing the role of participatory governance in sustainable rural development. It is concluded that the APPT scale is capable of measuring the effects of tourism public policies in different national contexts, contributing to the advancement of comparative evaluation models.
