Archaeological applications of polynomial texture mapping: analysis, conservation and representation
No full textPolynomial Texture Mapping is an image capture and processing technique that was developed by HP Labs in 2000. It enables the recording and representation of subtle surface details using a standard digital camera and lighting, and software that is free for non-commercial use. Cultural heritage applications have been associated with the technology from its earliest stages, including examples in areas such as cuneiform, numismatics, rock art, lithics and Byzantine art. The paper begins by outlining the technical principles involved. It then brings together the extant work in the field. Through examples developed by the University of Southampton in partnership with a range of UK and international bodies it demonstrates the benefits of the technology in the areas of archaeological analysis, conservation and representation. Finally it considers the future possibilities of this technology and ongoing developments

No full textDie biografie is ‘n belangrike vorm van geskiedskrywing. Daarom is dit jammer dat daar in die afgelope paar dekades min we tenskaplike biografieë in Afrikaans verskyn het. Die werke van O.J.O. Ferreira oor Stephanus Schoeman en J.C. Brits oor Tielman Roos is nog voor 1980 gepubliseer. Twee meer resente studies is dié van E. Truter oor Rachel Isabella Steyn (1997) en A. van Wyk oor Dirk Mudge (1999). Dan is daar ook Karel Schoeman se biografiese studies oor Olive Schreiner (1989), Susanna Smit (1995) en Machtelt Smit (1997). Van die beste resente biografieë in Afrikaans is nie deur vakhistorici geskryf nie. Onder hierdie boeke tel, naas Schoeman se werke, die letterkundige en literatuurhistorikus J.C. Kannemeyer se lywige biografieë van D.J. Opperman (1986), C.J. Langenhoven (1995) en, tans, C. Louis Leipoldt, wat almal op deeglike navorsing gegrond is. Hierby kan nou ook die bio
grafie van N.P. van Wyk Louw deur J.C. Steyn, taalkundige en kultuurhistorikus, gevoeg word. Dit is naas Hancock se Smuts biografie waarskynlik die mees omvattende werk wat nog oor ‘n Suid -Afrikaner geskryf is. On Idempotent Measures of Small Norm
No full textIn this Master’s Thesis, we set up the groundwork for [8], a paper co-written by the author and Hung Pham. We summarise the Fourier and Fourier-Stieltjes algebras on both abelian and general locally compact groups. Let Г be a locally compact group. We answer two questions left open in [11] and [13]:
1. When Г is abelian, we prove that if ϰs ∈ B(Г) is an idempotent with norm 1 < ||ϰs|| < 4/3 then S is the union of two cosets of an open subgroup of Г.
2. For general Г, we prove that if ϰs ∈ McbA(Г) is an idempotent with norm ||ϰs||cb < 1+√2/2 , then S is an open coset in Г
