Studied the validity of an instrument for classifying psychiatric patients, using a matched case-control study design. Human subjects: 30 male and female Italian adults (aged 18 yrs and older) (neuroticism). 30 male and female Italian adults (aged 18 yrs and older) (population controls). All Ss completed the General Health Questionnaire-30 (GHQ-30), and differences between cases and controls were evaluated statistically and compared to results from other studies on Italian population groups. Sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value were determined according to Ss' age, sex, and socioeconomic status (SES). The gravity of symptoms was rated according to D. Goldberg and B. Blackwell's Psychiatric Overall Severity Rating Scale (1970). Control patients were evaluated according to the Clinical Interview Schedule by Goldberg et al (1970). The differerentation between suicide and homicide in cases of death due to sharp weapon isn’t always easy, but it’s required by justice authorities. The present case shows difficulties in every criterion knows as useful in differential diagnosis between homicide and suicide

Implementing cognitive rehabilitation interventions for schizophrenia patients in mental health services: Focus on Integrated Psychological Therapy (IPT)

    No full text
Objectives: Integrated Psychological Therapy (IPT) is a group-based cognitive-behavior therapy program for schizophrenia that integrates cognitive and social cognitive remediation with psychosocial rehabilitation. IPT is based on the underlying assumption that basic deficits in cognitive functioning have a pervasive effect on higher levels of behavioral organization, including social skills and social and independent functioning. Meta-analytic studies underlined that IPT is an evidence-based rehabilitation approach for schizophrenia patients. The aim of this review was to discuss the feasibility and effectiveness in implementing IPT in everyday clinical practice in an Italian mental health service, among patients with schizophrenia and to identify the promoting strategies and the barriers against IPT implementation. Methods: For these purpose, five studies published from 2011 to 2016 were included in the review, investigating the IPT cost-effectiveness ratio, compared with treatment as usual (TAU) in people with schizophrenia in a real-world psychiatric rehabilitative setting at the University Department of Mental Health of the Spedali Civili Hospital in Brescia (Italy). Results: IPT was accepted by the majority proportion of schizophrenia patients and findings have shown promising improvement in clinical, cognitive and psychosocial functioning, persisting over time, after IPT intervention, with a favorable cost-effectiveness ratio. Conclusions: In summary, our experience demonstrated that IPT could be effectively implemented as an integral component of psychosocial interventions and that it was accepted by a significant proportion of people with schizophrenia admitted to a medium-length-of-stay psychiatric rehabilitation setting. Participants who completed the cognitive training were observed to have significantly improved cognition and psychosocial functioning, whereas the groups who did not participate or discontinued the training did not demonstrate similar gains. Although these promising and encouraging results on IPT efficacy in real-world psychiatric rehabilitative setting, there is need for further translational research evaluating the effectiveness and applicability of cognitive remediation in everyday clinical practice

Development of two new Mini-STR multiplex assay for typing archival Bouin's fluid-fixed paraffin-embedded tissues

Short amplicon autosomal short tandem repeat (Mini-STR) assay has proved to be a highly useful tool in forensic applications, especially for highly degraded DNA samples that typically result in partial profiles and total loss of information from regular STR amplicons. In this study two new quadruplex systems were designed to get nuclear DNA profile from degraded forensic casework samples. In order to obtain PCR products less than 120 bp in size, primer pairs of eight STR markers, included in available commercially multiplex PCR kits, were redesigned and assembled intwo PCR-multiplexes: D8S1179, D3S1358, TPOX, D16S539 and CSF1P0, TH01, D13S317, D5S818. After validation, these two Mini-STR quadruplex were employed in paternity testing case that involved DNA extraction from archival postmortem Bouin’s fluid-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue where commercial kit yielded low success. The results obtained with the present Mini-STR PCR-multiplexes proved clearly demonstrating their usefulness in analyzing degraded DNA samples

Palaeomicrobiology meets forensic medicine: time as a fourth-dimension for the crime scene

AbstractThe unrelenting progress of laboratory techniques is rapidly unleashing the huge potential of palaeomicrobiology. That bodies are often found in poor condition is common to both palaeomicrobiology and forensic medicine, and this might stimulate them towards a joint quest to extract reproducible data for reliable specimens
