Salute e crisi : convergenze e divergenze nei sistemi regionali italiani tra il 2005 e il 2013

This article focuses on the possible impact of the recent economic crisis on the Italian population’s health adopting regions as a unit of analysis. If it is difficult to evaluate the effects of the crisis for various reasons (lack of data and methodological problems), it is still possible to describe what changed and what did not change before and some years after the economic downturn. With the aim of describing these changes we analyzed aggregate (Hfa, Istat) and individual data (Health Conditions and Health Services, Istat, 2005-2013) applying multivariate statistical techniques (multidimensional scaling and Ols regression). The results show that, in terms of population’s health, health services and health inequalities, the Italian regions appear to be somewhat less similar in 2013 than before the crisis. In a systemic perspective the distances among them, also considering the well-known Southern-Northern cleavage, seem to have been further enlarged

Some clarifications about the use of the relation between height and education as a proxy for social inequalities : a response to the comments

The response clarifies aims and limitations of the study. It describes the association over time between educational attainment (proxy of social position) and stature (distal proxy of bio-social disadvantage): it does not aim to investigate the genetic determinants of height. In addition, some caveats are mentioned about the role of the genetic inheritance on social characteristics and some robustness checks are added to the analysis

A different approach to investigating social inequalities : the relationship between height and education in Italy

This study focuses on the longitudinal relationship between height and years of school attendance, considering this association to be a measure of social inequality within the Italian population. In this regard, if we think that social inequalities in education have been progressively decreasing, we should expect this relation to attenuate. To test this hypothesis, we use data gathered from ISTAT “Multiscopo” and “Condizioni di Salute e Ricorso ai Servizi Sanitari” 1994, 1999, 2001-2007 and 2009-2010 surveys (we consider about 460 thousand individuals born from the 1930s to the 1980s). Hierarchical linear regression models applied in the analysis show an important increase in the education levels and the average height of the Italian population, and a slight decrease in the relationship between height and years of school attendance for males born in the 1950s and 1960s but substantial stability in the following years. The decrease is less marked for women. The findings add evidence of a partial attenuation of social inequalities in the post-war period, but their persistence in later years

Changes in the labour market and health inequalities during the years of the recent economic downturn in Italy

There is widespread concern that episodes of unemployment and unstable working conditions adversely affect health. We add to the debate by focusing on the relationship between work trajectory and the self-reported health of Italian men and women during the present economic downturn. Relying on Italian data in the EU-SILC project (from 2007 to 2010), our sample includes all individuals aged 30 to 60 in 2010, and uses multivariate binomial regression models for preliminary analyses and the Structural Equations modelling (SEM) to observe the cumulative effects of health status according to different job trajectories. Our main findings show similar pictures for men and women. Individuals who are unemployed, ejected or in precarious occupational positions have a higher risk of worsening their health status during these years

La salute degli italiani prima e dopo la crisi economica (2005-2013) : alcune evidenze empiriche sulle categorie sociali a maggior rischio di impatto

This study investigates the relationship between the recent economic crisis and the health of Italians, or more accurately describes the trends of some health indicators of the Italian population in association with socio-economic changes that have characterized Italy in recent years. In the first part of the article we examine the trends of some important indicators socio-economic aggregates and health (life expectancy and some mortality rates). In the second part we present some analysis on individual data (Istat – Survey on health status and use of health services). Our aim is to show the evolution of health conditions between 2005 and 2013 taking in account sociodemographic characteristics of different social categories. The results show that groups most affected by the crisis (with economic problems and unemployment) are substantially the same who show a worsening of the physical and psychological health. They are characterized by low level of schooling, they live in the southern and island Italian regions, and are more frequently male
