Demographic sustainability in Italian territories: The link between depopulation and population ageing
No full textSince the Second World War, Italy has experienced major demographic changes,
including increasing survival, decreasing fertility and higher rates of immigration.
These changes have silently and slowly led to important shifts in the structure and the
territorial distribution of the population. Thus, like in many other European countries,
population ageing and depopulation have become the most relevant demographic
phenomena in Italy. In this paper, we studied the relationship between depopulation
and ageing in Italian territories in the 1971–2019 period using the census data of
the Italian municipalities and applying spatial techniques. We found that high levels
of depopulation later result in high levels of population ageing, and that recent
population ageing processes are also connected to ongoing depopulation processes,
thereby creating a vicious circl

No full textIn European Countries, many territories experienced and are still experiencing a depopulation. The negative balance of births and deaths is combined with a negative net migration. At the same time, the decrease in births and increase in life expectancy caused the population ageing. Depopulation is strongly connected with population ageing. The aim of this work is to understand the relationship between depopulation and ageing population and the sustainability of a high level of two phenomena. We study these phenomena and their relationship in the Italian territories in the period 1951-2011. We analyse the most detailed administrative level, the municipalities. Census data are used.
Correlation coefficient between depopulation and population ageing indicators are calculated in order to investigate the association between the two phenomena. A regression model is applied in order to understand if population ageing is determined by the population variations. Finally, the municipalities, which experienced continuing depopulation, are examined in depth. A strong depopulation has determined the high level of population ageing, but the recent population ageing has contributed to the ongoing depopulation, creating a vicious circle. Long-term depopulation and strong ageing population seem to be not sustainable in the near future

No full textC’erano una volta le linee guida della commissione europea per la “sfida” dell’invecchiamento: sostegno all’immigrazione, aumento dei tassi di occupazione delle donne e degli over 55 e l’innalzamento dei tassi di fecondità. Appariva fondamentale dare sostegno alle donne, schiacciate dalla responsabilità di mettere al mondo figli, di lavorare di più e di occuparsi degli anziani della famiglia. Gli economisti dicono che la crisi passerà in pochi anni, ma in campo demografico cosa succederà? I flussi migratori rallentano, forse gli immigrati disoccupati e che hanno maggiori difficoltà nel trovare un lavoro se ne stanno andando; i tassi di disoccupazione giovanile e quelli femminili sono quasi ai massimi storici; i matrimoni, in Italia preludio della fecondità, sono diminuiti. Come possiamo pensare che le giovani donne, disoccupate o precarie, con delle aspettative economiche diminuite per la crisi, decidano di fare un numero di figli superiore a quello delle generazioni precedenti dal momento che la ripresa della fecondità - con le misure per sostenere questa ripresa - veniva indicata come la vera “soluzione” all’invecchiamento? Cosa succederà all’invecchiamento italiano dopo la crisi? L’intento del lavoro è quello di esaminare le dinamiche, prima e dopo la crisi, delle variabili considerate nelle linee guida della Commissione Europea e di provare a ragionare sul futuro
Diagrammatic logic and exceptions:an introduction

science, it may be helpful to use several logics:
typically, a logic with implicit effects for the
language, and a more classical logic for the user.
Hence, the study of computational effects should
take place in a framework where distinct logics
can be related. In this paper, such a framework is
presented: it is a category, called the category
of propagators. Each propagator defines a kind of
logic, called a diagrammatic logic, which is
endowed with a deduction system and a sound notion
of models. Morphisms of propagators provide the
required relationships between diagrammatic
logics. The category of propagators has been
introduced by Duval and Lair in 2002, it is based
on the notion of sketches, which is due to
Ehresmann in the 1960's. Then, the paper outlines
how Duval and Reynaud in 2004 used the category of
propagators for dealing with the computational
effect of raising and handling exceptions. Another

Population ageing in Italy after the 2008 economic crisis: a demographic approach
No full textPopulation ageing is a significant demographic change. The Italian population is one of the oldest in the world. Studies have demonstrated that the economic crisis, beginning in 2008, is related to demographic dynamics. We believe that this crisis has an impact on Italian population ageing. We show that effects of the current economic crisis on population ageing are already observable. We predict how the current economic crisis will affect population ageing in the future until 2026. We estimate the number of births and net migration entries that did not take place due to the economic crisis. We find that missing births and missing net migration entries attributed to the current economic crisis have already had and will have an effect on the speed of population ageing in Italy. The demographic effects of this short-term economic crisis will become even more visible in the future. The results can help institutions have an overview of the consequences of the worsening demographic dynamics on the population structure due to adverse economic conditions. This paper is an important warning about the consequences of unexpected shocks. Demographic scientists, as well as policymakers, should be very interested in our results
