This research field is interesting because it has several relevant applications: for example, a system able to detect movements of non-rigid objects is useful in tracking and understanding human motion. Among the main tools used to find and track a non-rigid object there are “active shape models” [3], i.e. dynamic models able to describe certain object shapes in their spatial and temporal evolutions. By using a 2D model, a 3D object shape projected onto the image plane can be characterized in order to follow appropriately the temporal evolution of the object, the model has to reflect its nature. On the basis of the nature of the objects to be modeled, active shape models can be divided into: • snakes (characterization of rigid or non-rigid object shapes) [4]; • deformable templates (based on a mathematical models of objects) [5]; • dynamic contours (based on dynamical mathematical models of objects) [6]

    A joint approach to shape-based human tracking and behavior analysis

    In this paper a joint human tracking and recognition system is proposed. While usually these two functions are performed separately, it will be shown that it is possible to improve the estimation performances if these functions are done jointly. For this purpose, a Bayesian estimation framework is presented and implemented using sequential Monte Carlo techniques. Moreover it will be shown how the estimation can be performed efficiently by using the Generalized Hough Transform. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is demonstrated for a variety of image sequences

    Synthesis of Unequally Spaced Arrays by Simulated Annealing

    : Simulated annealing is applied to the synthesis of arrays in order to reduce the peaks of side lobes by acting on the elements' positions and weight coefficients. In the case considered, the number of array elements and the spatial aperture of an unequally spaced array are a priori fixed. Thanks to the high flexibility of simulated annealing, the results obtained for a 25-element array over an aperture of 50l improve those reported in the literature.     Renata Mambelli’s novel Argentina (2009) belongs to the overall discourse on the history of the Italian migration to Argentina. Such a subject emerged in Italian literature beginning from the nineties, with the purpose of representing the silent and unknown flow of people from one country to the other. A female novel, Argentina deals with the theme of Italian emigration during the thirties by embracing a gender perspective. The heart of the representation is the migrant’s creatural dignity. By restoring the voice of women and mothers – the key figures in her narrative – Mambelli tackles them of marginality.     In Marjorie Agosín’s novel Sagrada memoria (1994) a new form of memorizing emerge. Abandoning the linearity of discourse, this form is a more synchronic and simultane- ous process, its aim is to regenerate the experience and to create a new way of transmission from one generation to the next. Through the rupture of the diachronical approach, the novel puts the image as a model of memory. The novel is composed by imaginative sequences cre- ated through a series of organizational devices.
