Caste, Gender and Resistance: A Critical Study of Bama’s Sangathi
Dalit literature articulates the oppressions and exploitations
faced by Dalits in a caste ridden society. Dalit writing as a political form of
writing records the cultural and social lives of Dalits and ideologically the
writing offers a call for resistance. Bama is a Tamil Christian Dalit writer
who writes about the lives of Dalit Women in Tamil Nadu. This paper
attempts a look at Bama’s novel Sangathi as a site representing Dalit women
and analyses how caste and gender act as tools of double oppression in their
life. This critical feminist reading of the novel from a Dalit Feminist
perspective focuses on how women are discriminated in the Paraiya
community in their relations with different social institutions like education,
marriages, electoral politics etc. Simultaneously, we see how this text
through its form and theme builds up a resistance against the oppressions
the women face in their everyday lives
The Dynamics of Caste, Power and Gender construct: A Reading of U R Ananthamurthy’s Samskara and Bharathipura
U. R. Ananthamurthy is one of the most significant representatives of the "Navya" movement ("The new movement") in Kannada literature and is counted among the most eminent Indian authors. Both his books and his social engagement made him known far beyond the Indian language borders and later abroad. Ananthamurthy\u27s central themes belong the examination of the caste system, religious rules and traditions, as well as the ambivalent relationship between the handed down cultural value system and the new values of a changing world. This paper makes an attempt to draw a brief analysis on the Dynamics of Caste, Power and Gender construct in Ananthamurthy’s two significant novels Samskara (1965) and Bharathipura (1973). These novels intend to educate the people about the social evil practice and need to fight against it. Interactions Between Automated Shuttle and Vulnerable Road Users: A Case Study
The evermore introduction of automated systems in driving operations opens the possibility of an upcoming traffic scenario with automated vehicles. Research about automated vehicles in traffic has been run with automated shuttles mainly for two reasons: to provide a wide idea about users’ acceptance (more users can get on a bus than on a private vehicle) and valuable simulation of interactions with other vehicles, but on a fixed and limited route. The main concern in this sense is a quantitative estimation (speed, acceleration, and deceleration) of the automated shuttle while interacting with vulnerable road users (VRUs) and regular vehicles. This specific analysis about the interactions was the main focus of this study. The proposed study was a real-world simulation set in Bari (Italy), with a partially automated shuttle bus provided by Navya. Data about the vehicle interacting with pedestrians, e-scooters, and regular vehicles were collected and then processed. The automated vehicle behaved in a safe way in all the tested interactions, keeping its speed very low (below 15 km/h), to ensure comfort also during the emergency braking (with a maximum deceleration of 1.5 m/s2). The most outstanding result of the tests was to verify that the automated shuttle behaves in the same way for all the different interactions, regardless of the type of user interacting and the modality (crossing, overtaking, following). This result means a lot because it suggests that the vehicle can safely deal also with unpredictable decisions by VRUs, that otherwise could have constituted a big issue for the implementation of such types of vehicles
Investigating metallo-peptides as antibacterial agents
Increasing bacterial drug resistance and the emergence of dangerous resistant pathogens like methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is driving an urgent need to develop new antibiotics. Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) and metals are two classes of antibacterial agents being explored as novel therapeutics. AMPs are produced as a part of innate immune system of living organisms and have broad spectrum activity and a bactericidal effect making bacteria less able to develop resistance., Metals are one of the oldest antibacterial agents known to humans. Notably, silver is very effective, and although its exact mode of action/s is unclear its ability to bind to a variety of enzymes is likely important. This project aims to investigate whether the coordination of silver to AMPs can create a synergistic antibacterial agent. To achieve this, AMPs, based on their potential to bind Ag(I), were selected from large AMP databases available online. Three AMPs, latarcin 3b, pleurain R1, tigerinin1, were selected. Further two Ag(I)-binding neuropeptides having properties consistent with antibacterial activity were also investigated. These were the tachykinins Neurokinin B, Substance P. Finally, Substance P was modified to include a methionine at its N-terminus (M1 Substance P) to generate a predicted high-affinity Ag(I)-binding site. The physiochemical properties of all the peptides were assessed using the R computational tool and these were related to potential antibacterial potential. Neurokinin B and Substance P have previously been shown to bind Ag(I), and the ability of the remaining peptides to coordinate Ag(I) was assessed using NMR and electronic spectroscopy. All but pleurain R1 and tigerinin1 could coordinate Ag(I), and further investigation of pleurain indicated that the lack of Ag(I)-binding was due to disulphide-bond formation. The Peptide-Ag(I) complexes were then studied for their antibacterial properties against gram negative bacteria using percentage inhibition and time-kill analysis. The results of this analysis showed that two complexes, latarcin 3b-Ag(I), and M1SP-Ag(I) displayed synergistic activity. Finally, the cellular location of silver after cultures were treated with these complexes was determined. These results show that silver alone is located mainly in the periplasm, but coordination to the peptides traps the metal in the membrane. This suggests that the synergistic effect is due to improved membrane-lytic activity. It can be concluded that the Peptide-Ag(I) complex can hold potential as next-generation antibacterial agents
Factors influencing dietary changes during pregnancy – A mixed method stakeholder perception study from a rural area
Background/objectives: Maternal nutrition is vital for maternal and child health, hence it is important to understand the reasons for dietary changes made and additional support required. The study aims to assess dietary changes in antenatal women, their associations with socio-demographic and clinical factors, and to explore factors influencing these changes as perceived by both pregnant women and healthcare providers {Medical officer, Primary Health Care Officers (PHCO) and Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA)} Methods: An explanatory mixed method study was conducted from October 2020 to October 2022 involving interview of antenatal women who have completed their second trimester registered in Kurnad PHC area followed by in-depth interview of antenatal women and the health care providers of Kurnad PHC. Results: The study included 299 participants with a mean age of 27.41 years. About 75.5 % were unemployed and approximately 77 % held below-poverty-line cards. Co-morbidities were present in 36 %, with 87 % having anaemia, 51.85 % gestational diabetes and 42.95 % pregnancy-induced hypertension. Thirty-three percent experienced hyperemesis gravidarum.Pregnant women increased intake of green leafy vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds while decreasing poultry, meat, dairy, sweets, bakery items, and fats. Reasons included improving health, addressing medical issues, and satisfying cravings.Chi-square analysis found associations with socio-demographic and clinical factors. Influencing factors included health promotion, advice from family and healthcare providers, managing health issues, cravings, affordability, and community services like Anganwadi. Conclusion: Behaviour change communication strategies and adequate support for decision making and availing nutritious food will facilitate appropriate dietary changes during pregnancy
IJCM_143A: Dietary changes during pregnancy: exploring the influencing factors as perceived by antenatal women and health care providers - a mixed methods study from a rural area in Dakshina Kannada district.
Background:
Maternal nutrition impacts maternal-child health. Antenatal diet affects well-being and anaemia-related maternal mortality.
Objectives:
The objectives are to assess the dietary changes made by antenatal women, its association with socio demographic and clinical variables and to explore the factors influencing the dietary changes as perceived by the antenatal women and health care providers (Medical officer, ANMs and ASHA)
Methodology:
A mixed method study was conducted. The study involved interviewing antenatal women registered between October2020 to October 2021 in Kurnad PHC area and those who have completed their second trimester and in-depth interview of antenatal women and the health care providers (Medical officer, ANMs and ASHA) of Kurnad PHC in 2021 and two quarters of 2022.
Results:
Most participants were aged 26-30 (43.1%), mean age 27.41±4.838 years. 47.3% had high school education, 75.5% were unemployed, and 17.8% were self-employed. 77% were below the poverty line, 55.4% belonged to joint families, and 39.3% to nuclear families. 42% lived with husband’s family, 22% with maternal family. Co-morbidities were in 36%, anaemia in 87%, gestational diabetes in 51.85%, pregnancy-induced hypertension in 42.95%. Reasons were health improvement, healthy child, co-morbidities, and gastritis. Statistical significance existed between pregnancy dietary changes and socio- demographics, clinical variables. Factors influencing changes were health promotion, advice from family and providers, co-morbidity management, cravings, affordability, community-based services.
Conclusion:
Dietary changes were seen in more than half of the antenatal women. Behaviour change communication strategies and adequate support for decision making and availing nutritious food will facilitate appropriate dietary changes during pregnancy
Production, statistical optimization and application of endoglucanase from Rhizopus stolonifer utilizing coffee husk
Coffee cherry husk (CH) is one of the major
by-products obtained from coffee processing industry and
accounts to 43 ± 5.9 % of cellulose. Screening of fungal
organism for cellulase production was carried out and the
potential organism was identified as Rhizopus stolonifer by
internal transcribed spacer’s (ITS)—5.8S rDNA analysis.
A systematic study with response surface methodology
(RSM) based on CCRD was used to study the interactions
among the variables such as pH (3–7), moisture (40–80 %)
and progression duration (72–168 h) of the fermentation
process to maximize the enzyme production. Under the
optimized cultivation condition, R. stolonifer synthesized
22,109 U/gds. Model validations at optimum operating
conditions showed excellent agreement between the
experimental results and the predicted responses with a
confidence level of 95 %. Endoglucanase thus produced
was utilized for ethanol production by simultaneous saccharification
and fermentation and maximum of 65.5 g/L
of ethanol was obtained. This fungal cellulase has also
reported to be efficient detergent additives and promising
for commercial use. The present study demonstrates coffee
husk as a significant bioprocess substrate. Statistical optimization
with major parameters for cellulase production
can be highly applicable for industrial scale. Furthermore,
value addition to coffee husk with sustainable waste
management leading to environment conservation can be

A Simple Robust Image Processing Algorithm for Analysis of Static Foot Pressure Intensity Image to Detect Foot Risk Areas in Diabetic Patients
Impact behaviour of Al 2014 wrought alloy using Split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB): Its influence on mechanical and microstructural properties
The deformation behaviour of Al 2014 alloy under high strain rate dynamic load experienced in the actual service condition of aero-structural components is scarce in the literature. Therefore, Split Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) based high strain rate compressive behaviour (dynamic loading) of Al 2014 is investigated in this work. The wrought (WAR) form of Al 2014 alloy has been chosen to examine its deformation behaviour with varying high strain rate compressive loading, generated through 4 different pressure ranges (1 bar, 1.5 bar, 1.75 bar, and 2 bar) at striker bar end in SHPB technique. These pressure ranges induced high strain rates 5536/s, 6236/s, 6576/s, and 7783/s in separate WAR specimen, correspondingly, which were recorded as flow stress curves. Also, the WAR Al 2014 alloy was heat treated with standard Tempered-6 (T6) condition to homogenize its microstructure. The T6 condition was exposed further with the same pressure values, which induced high strain rates 5303/s, 6139/s, 6977/s, and 7861/s in T6 specimens. The SHPB-based flow stress responses for both WAR and T6 conditions were compared to understand high strain rate deformation behaviours. The WAR specimen exposed at 7783/s strain rate has shown superior Peak Stress (P.S., ∼765 MPa) and %contractionP.S. (∼15%) compared to its T6 counterpart (at 7861/s). Prior to the dynamic studies, the quasi-static responses were also explored through tensile, compressive and hardness measurements (with WAR and T6) to realize the overall materials' behaviour. These dynamic responses under high strain rate compressive loading were correlated with in-process microstructural evolution, explored through SEM and XRD techniques. Exhaustive EBSD analysis quantified the excellent peak stress and % contraction in WAR conditions due to presence of huge amount of low angle grain boundaries (∼85%), ultrafine grains, relatively textured microstructure ({111} 〈100〉, {101} 〈001〉, etc), and significant strain hardening phenomena, whereas large amount of high angle grain boundary (∼88%), equiaxed and uniform microstructure contributed for higher hardness (∼22%) and tensile strength (∼2%) in T6 conditions.21
