Narrowband delay tolerant protocols for WSN applications. Characterization and selection guide

    No full text
This article focuses on delay tolerant protocols for Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) applications, considering both established and new protocols. We obtained a comparison of their characteristics by implementing all of them on an original platform for network simulation, and by testing their behavior on a common test-bench. Thereafter, matching the requirements linked to each application with the performances achieved in the test-bench, allowed us to define an application oriented protocol selection guide

Multiple Translations for Disseminating Social Issues: Mag Design Experimentations

    No full text
This contribution considers some didactic experimentations in the area of independent magazine design, realized by our master’s degree students in communication design within the studio course “Magazzino sociale.” The main goal was to invite students to analyse, to interpret, to re-elaborate (textually and visually) social issues concerning education, welfare, human rights, environment and health. The intention was dual: to build a critical point of view on how we produce content on social issues, but also to identify opportunities for changing the current order of things. Textuality, intertextuality, and translatability were the basic theoretical references for the development of the projects

Griscelli syndrome type 2: long-term follow-up after unrelated donor bone marrow transplantation

    No full text
Griscelli syndrome (GS) is a rare autosomal recessive disease characterized by silvery hair ('partial albinism'). Three forms exist; GS type 2 (GS2), the most common one, is characterized by severe primary immunodeficiency with acute episodes of hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) which may be fatal in the absence of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. A 5-year-old boy with HLH was referred to us because of silvery-gray hair present since birth. Abnormal pigment clumps were observed in the medulla of hair shafts on light microscopy. Electron microscopy of a skin biopsy revealed melanosomes in melanocytes, but not in keratinocytes. Leukocytes were devoid of intracytoplasmic granules on blood smear. Neurological signs were absent. Genotyping revealed a homozygous haplotype for polymorphic markers linked to the RAB27A locus, but no RAB27A mutation. A diagnosis of GS2 was established. The patient received bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from an unrelated donor, and after 72 months he did not show relapse of HLH. The long, uneventful follow-up supports the use of BMT from an unrelated donor if transplantation from a relative is not possible

A long-term study of a snake community in north-western Tuscany (Central Italy): Population structure and density patterns

We analysed a snake species community of a Mediterranean 0.2 ha ecotonal area during a 21 year time span, monitoring two colubrid and one viperid snake species. We carried out analyses in seven years (1997, 1999, 2002, 2004–2005, 2016–2017) that had similar sampling efforts and, in the last two years of short-term monitoring, we applied a recently proposed monitoring protocol of the Italian Environment Ministry. In total, we captured 172 distinct individuals, 61 whip snakes (Hierophis viridiflavus), 26 barred grass snakes (Natrix helvetica) and 85 asp vipers (Vipera aspis). Regarding the long-term monitoring period, whip snakes were captured on average about nine times per year, grass snakes were captured four times per year and asp vipers were found 12 times per year. Captures decreased in whip snakes, while increased in grass snakes and remained constant in asp vipers. In 2016 and 2017, we captured 10 whip snakes, 19 grass snakes and 31 asp vipers. Density estimates of snake species (0.5 H. viridiflavus/ha, 0.3 N. helvetica/ha and 0.7 V. aspis/ha) differ, to a certain extent, from published results for some other areas of central, northern and western Europe, perhaps depending on the approach applied for habitat suitability estimation. The average body size between two years differed neither for whip snakes nor for grass snakes, but it decreased significantly in asp vipers

Customizable vector acceleration in extreme-edge computing. A risc-v software/hardware architecture study on VGG-16 implementation

    No full text
Computing in the cloud-edge continuum, as opposed to cloud computing, relies on high performance processing on the extreme edge of the Internet of Things (IoT) hierarchy. Hardware acceleration is a mandatory solution to achieve the performance requirements, yet it can be tightly tied to particular computation kernels, even within the same application. Vector-oriented hardware acceleration has gained renewed interest to support artificial intelligence (AI) applications like convolutional networks or classification algorithms. We present a comprehensive investigation of the performance and power efficiency achievable by configurable vector acceleration subsystems, obtaining evidence of both the high potential of the proposed microarchitecture and the advantage of hardware customization in total transparency to the software program

Efficient Mathematical Accelerator Design Coupled with an Interleaved Multi-threading RISC-V Microprocessor

    No full text
Interleaved multi-threaded architectures (IMT) have proven to be an advantageous solution to maximize the pipeline utilization, when it comes to executing parallel applications, as different threads operate different instruction processing phases in the same cycle. In this study, we expand the target applications of an IMT microarchitecture by introducing an efficient yet handy special-purpose mathematics engine, operating on local scratchpad memories that give low latency and wide data-bus access

Recurso sombra en corrales de engorde bovino durante períodos de estrés calórico. 1. Condiciones ambientales. Comunicación =Shade in feedlots during periods of heat stress. 1. Climatic conditions. Communication
