Emergent multimedia clusters in the Lille, Lyon and Marseille metropolitan areas
The spatial, organizational and institutional proximity plays an important part in the geography of economic development (Boschma, 2005). It is therefore important to see what kinds of networks are being developed within the multimédia sector between the different actors of the Triple Helix (Etzkowitz and Leydersdorff, 1997): firms, training and R&D facilities, and public authorities. We will take for the example three French metropolitan areas: Lille, Lyon and Marseille. The dynamism of the social networks is supported by the development of a collective governance which associates public and private actors (Maillat and Kébir, 1999). So, initiatives have launched to facilitate strategic governance of emergent regional multimédia clusters. Three forms of governance (Tremblay and Rousseau, 2005) can be distinguished: public (Pole Images Nord-Pas-de-Calais in Lille), private (Imaginove in Lyon) and public-private partnership (Pole Sud Image in Marseille). These contrasted situations result from internal conflicts in the different industries of the multimedia sector. These structures have launched several similar actions in order to the constitution of social networks. Principles are inspired by the Competitivness Clusters and Michael Porter’s theories (2000). We can summarize them in the following way: - Interprofessional meetings, - Pooling of the human resources of the companies from the cluster, - Training programme for employees and executives, - Calls for collaborative projects which associate industrial and academic partners, - Support to firms willing to try out innovative business approaches, - Support programme for companies seeking to compete internationally. But, collaboration between different firms was generally low or nonexistent in spite of several regional projects (Einright, 1996). Collaborations are still very recent, rarely include a cross-media approach and hesitate to develop partnerships with research units. Similarly, the three metropolitan areas suffer from the poor adaptation of the regional training offer, which is far too rich and diverse compared to the actual capacities of the regional moving picture economy. Companies, mainly SMEs, cannot hire many people and they hesitate to embark on international missions.
Quasars as standard candles II. The non-linear relation between UV and X-ray emission at high redshifts
A tight non-linear relation between the X-ray and the optical-ultraviolet
(UV) emission has been observed in Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) over a wide
range of redshift and several orders of magnitude in luminosity, suggesting the
existence of an ubiquitous physical mechanism regulating the energy transfer
between the accretion disc and the X-ray emitting corona. Recently, our group
developed a method to use this relation in the observational cosmology, turning
quasars into standardizable candles. This work has the main aim to investigate
the potential evolution of this correction at high redshifts. We thus studied
the Lx-Luv relation for a sample of quasars in the redshift
range 4<7, adopting the selection criteria proposed in our previous work
regarding their spectral properties. The resulting sample consists of 53 Type 1
(unobscured) quasars, observed either with Chandra or XMM-Newton, for which we
performed a full spectral analysis, determining the rest-frame 2 keV flux
density, as well as more general X-ray properties such as the estimate of
photon index, and the soft (0.5-2 keV) and hard (2-10 keV) unabsorbed
luminosities. We find that the relation shows no evidence for evolution with
redshift. The intrinsic dispersion of the Lx-Luv for a sample free of
systematics/contaminants is of the order of 0.22 dex, which is consistent with
previous estimates from our group on quasars at lower redshift
The architectural examples dating to 11th and 12th centuries are not only important to studying artistic and technical culture, but they are also meaningful indicators about history of settlement dynamics. In fact, the process of patrimonialization of Romanesque architectures followed ways closely linked to the destiny of the population in the nearby areas. When villages were re-positioned or re-focused during the late Middle Ages, Romanesque architectures experienced phenomenon of ‘ruralisation', in association with a significant conservation of their original appearance as a ‘fossil'. Instead, when settlements had demographic and political successful outcomes beside the church, the medieval buildings have been partially or selectively preserved, routinely undergoing interventions of liturgical and style adaptation. The phenomenon is studied through case studies related to the dynamism of the foundation of new villages between 12th and 14th centuries
Quasar cosmology: dark energy evolution and spatial curvature
We analyse some open debates in cosmology in light of the most updated quasar
(QSO) sample, covering a wide redshift range up to , combined with
type Ia supernovae (SNe) and baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). Indeed,
extending the cosmological analyses with high-redshift data is key to
distinguishing between different cosmological models that are degenerate at low
redshifts, and allowing better constraints on a possible dark energy (DE)
evolution. Also, we discuss combinations of BAO, SNe, and QSO data to
understand their compatibility and implications for extensions of the standard
cosmological model. Specifically, we consider a flat and non-flat cosmology, a flat and non-flat DE model with a constant DE
equation of state parameter (), and four flat DE models with variable ,
namely the Chevallier-Polarski-Linder and Jassal-Bagla-Padmanabhan models, and
an "exponential" and Barboza-Alcaniz parameterisations. We find that a joint
analysis of QSO+SNe with BAO is only possible in the context of a flat
Universe. Indeed BAO confirms the flatness condition assuming a curved
geometry, whilst SNe+QSO show evidence of a closed space. We also find
in all data sets assuming a flat
model. Yet, all the other models show a statistically significant deviation at
2-3 with the combined SNe+QSO+BAO data set. In the models where DE
density evolves with time, SNe+QSO+BAO data always prefer ,
. This DE phantom behaviour is mainly driven by
SNe+QSO, while BAO are closer to the flat model.Comment: 12 pages, 18 figures, 2 tables, published in MNRAS, comments are
