    Early last year, Tasmania lost one of its doyens of jazz; Max Gourlay. A pioneer of the Tasmanian jazz scene for over seven and a half decades. Max was born 14 August 1926 in Launceston. At the age of nine, he started formal violin lessons with Lynda Sheen. A quick learner, his first performance was soon after at the Theatre Royal in Hobart at the age of ten. By the age of fifteen, he had begun playing professionally for fundraising concerts for the Second World War effort.Full Tex

    The speed of linear waves in shallow water approaches a constant value as the wavelength becomes large relative to the water depth. For ships travelling in shallow water, this speed is known as the `critical speed' and acts as a barrier, similar to the speed of sound for aeroplanes. The possibility of travelling at transcritical and supercritical speeds is discussed for existing monohull and catamaran ships. We explore the predicted linearised flow around a ship as it approaches the critical speed, and the singularities that result. Experimental results show the actual flow patterns that occur at ship speeds close to the critical speed, for monohulls or catamarans, in open water or confined channels. References Ang, W. Of immediate concern is answering the question, "which test techniques are better than others?" Testing organizations have attempted to answer this question via empirical techniques, mostly based on establishing measures of performance based on organizational experience with different test techniques. Immediately, difficulties arise when attempts to normalize these performance measures (in order to apply results to predict future behavior) with respect to program size, complexity, experience of developers, and so on. ..
