Banks and Capitalists in Florence in the Decades after Unification

    No full text
The paper examines some aspects of the Tuscan banking system, emphasising the duality between the private banking system and the issuing banks. It considers both the different methods of managing credit and investments, and the transformation of the banking sector which emerged in the aftermath of unification of Italy and the transfer of the capital to Florence. Marco Cini uses as a case study the Banca Nazionale Toscana, established shortly after unification (1857). He examines, on the one hand, the relationships with the important Tuscan landowners and the Florentine financial system, which came to be associated with forms of speculation, especially in the construction field, when the capital was moved to Florence. On the other hand, he explores the theme of monetary emission and relationships with the issuing banks and the new state power. Simone Fagioli examines the activities of two private banks, Banco Fenzi and Banco Schmitz & Turri, using previously unpublished archive material. During the early years of unification, the management of these banks was still closely intertwined with the local political system. Fagioli analyses both what could be termed their "pure" banking activities and the areas and models of investment in industrial sectors (metallurgy, textiles and mining)

Cytotoxic tests recently performed at National Cancer Institute, NCI (USA), on [Cu(HPIR)2(DMF)2], 1, (H2PIR = piroxicam, 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-N-pyridin-2-yl-2H-1,2-benzothiazine-3-carboxamide 1,1-dioxide) a widely used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, NSAID [see R. Cini, G. Giorgi, A. Cinquantini, C. Rossi, M. Sabat, Inorg. Chem. 29 (1990) 5197–5200, for synthesis and structural characterization, DMF = dimethylformamide] (NSC #624662) by using a panel of ca. 50 human cancer cells, showed growth inhibition factor GI50 values as low as 20 ?M against several cancer lines, with an average value 54.4 ?M. The activity of 1 is larger against ovarian cancer cells, non-small lung cancer cells, melanoma cancer cells, and central nervous system cancer cells. The widely used anticancer drug carboplatin (cis-diammine(1,1-cyclobutanedicarboxylato)platinum(II)) (NSC #241240) has average GI50 value of 102 ?M. The reactions of copper(II)–acetate with other NSAIDs from the oxicam family were tested and crystalline complexes were obtained and characterized. Isoxicam (H2ISO = 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-N-(5-methylisoxazol-3-yl)-2H-1,2-benzothiazine-3-carboxamide 1,1-dioxide) produced [Cu(HISO)2] · 0.5DMF, 2 · 0.5DMF (DMF = dimethylfomamide). The coordination arrangement is square-planar and the HISO? anions behave as ambi-dentate chelators via O(amide),N(isoxazole) and O(enolate),O(amide) donors. Meloxicam (H2MEL = 4-hydroxy-2-methyl-N-(5-methyl-1,3-thiazol-2-yl)-2H-1,2-benzothiazine-3-carboxamide 1,1-dioxide) produced [Cu(HMEL)2(DMF)] · 0.25H2O, 3 · 0.25H2O. The coordination arrangement is square-pyramidal, the equatorial donors being O(amide),N(thiazole) from two HMEL? anions and the apical donor being O(DMF). Unexpectedly, cinnoxicam (HCIN = 2-methyl-1,1-dioxido-3-[(pyridin-2-ylamino)carbonyl]-2H-1,2-benzothiazin-4-yl-(3-phenylacrylate)) produced [Cu(MBT)2(PPA)2] (MBT = 3-(methoxycarbonyl)-2-methyl-2H-1,2-benzothiazin-4-olate 1,1-dioxide, PPA = 3-phenyl-N-pyridin-2-ylacrylamide)

Unusual hetero-atomic RhSCNSb(Rh) co-ordination ring. Synthesis and X-ray structure of [Rh(N1,S2-2-thiopyrimidinato)2(S2(Rh),N1(Sb)-2-thiopyrimidinato){Sb(C6H5)3}] and long time sought structure of mer-[RhCl3{Sb(C6H5)3}3]

The reaction of RhCl3 center dot 3H(2)O with SbPh3 (Ph, C6H5) in ethanol produced mer-[RhCl3(SbPh3)(3)] (1), as the main product, together with trans-[RhCl2(Ph)(SbPh3)(3)](2) (R. Cini, G. Giorgi, L. Pasquini, Inorg. Chim. Acta 196 (1992) 7; A. Cavaglioni, R. Cini, J. Chem. Soc., Dalton Trans. (1997) 1149). Ways to improve the yield for 1 and 2 were a subject of further works by this laboratory during the past decade and the reactivity of the organometallic compound 2 was investigated towards a variety of bases. Long sought single crystals of 1 suitable for X-ray diffraction have been obtained from hot acetone solution. The metal centre has a pseudo-octahedral coordination environment with the three chloride anions and the three SbPh3 molecules in mer positions. The Rh-Cl bond trans to Sb is significantly weakened by the high trans influence by antimony itself. This gives the rationale for the formation of 2 from RhCl3 and SbPh3 via the preliminary formation of 1, followed by dissociation of the activated chloride anion, and the subsequent formation of the Rh-C(Ph) linkage. The reaction of 1 with 2-thio-1,3-pyrimidine (Htpym) in ethanol produces crystalline [Rh((NS2)-S-1-tpym)(2)(N-1(Sb),S-2(Rh)-tpym)(SbPh3)] (3). Single crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction studies as obtained from ethanol/diethyl-ether contain a complex molecule and a quarter of an ethanol molecule in the asymmetric unit. Two out of three tpym(-) anions chelate the metal centre via the N-1 and S-2 atoms, whereas the third tpym- anion behaves as mono-dentate through the S-2 atom only. The sixth co-ordination position is occupied by the Sb atom. Interestingly, one of the N atoms of the monodentate tpym- anion behaves as electron donor to Sb and a Sb-N linkage forms (d((sb-N)), 2.846 angstrom). As a consequence, an unusual totally hetero-atomic five-membered co-ordination ring of the type RhSCNSb(Rh) forms. A molecular modelling analysis at the hybrid density functional level DFT-B3LYP was performed on selected coordination molecules

Ruthenium-Thiobase Complexes. Synthesis, Spectroscopy, Density Functional Studies for trans,cis,cis-[RuII(AsPh3)2(N,S-2-Thiopyrimidinato)2] and Structural Analysis of Selected Weak C-H...N and C-H...S Interactions

The reaction of trans-[Ru-III(AsPh3)(2)Cl-3(CH3OH)] (green powder) with 2-thiopyrimidine-1,3, HTPYM, in ethanol, produced red crystals of trans,cis,cis-[Ru-II(AsPh3)(2)((N,S) under bar -2-thiopyrimidinato)(2)]. The compound has two TPYM- chelating anions in the equatorial plane, whereas the As atoms occupy the apical positions. It is stable in the solid state but the yellow chloroform solutions turn to green quickly in air atmosphere. The Ru-As, Ru-S and Ru-N bond distances average 2.432(1), 2.440(2) and 2.078(6) angstrom, respectively. The AsPh3 ligands assume a semi-trefoil C-1 arrangement and have C-H center dot center dot center dot S intra-molecular hydrogen bond type interactions to TPYM- ligands. These latter ligands are also involved in C-H center dot center dot center dot N and C-H center dot center dot center dot S interactions that pair two thiobase ligands via an unusual way. Density functional computational studies on [Ru(AsH3)(2)((N,S) under bar -TPYM)(2)] model molecules show that the cis, cis, trans isomer is more stable than the trans, cis, cis one by some 5 kcal mol(-1)
