A model-based prediction of balancing behavior of rotors above the speed range in available balancing systems
No full textRotor balancing is probably the most discussed topic in the entire literature about rotor dynamics. It would therefore seem that, from the point of view of theory, this is a problem of little interest, however, balancing is very relevant in the industrial practice and sometimes there are very particular cases that cannot be addressed and solved by traditional methods. Moreover, many papers deal with only simulated results or with small-scale tests-rigs, which can hardly reproduce the behavior of real rotors. The case described in this paper is just one of these and presents what could be defined as “predicting the effect of balancing” at rotational speeds that are higher than those possible on balancing machines. Rotordynamics modeling, identification techniques developed by the authors and the available vibration measurements allow the simulation of the behavior, i.e. the vibrations, of the considered turbine rotor on the balancing machine,even at rotational speeds higher than those are possible to be reached, but that correspond to the trip speed in the plant
Bimonthly chemotherapy with oxaliplatin, irinotecan, infusional 5-fluorouracil/folinic acid in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer pretreated with irinotecan- or oxaliplatin-based chemotherapy
No full textThis study was conducted to assess the tolerability and efficacy of a ternary bimonthly irinotecan (CPT-11) - oxaliplatin (OHP) - infusional 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)/folinic acid (FA) combination in advanced colorectal cancer patients who had received prior CPT-11 and/or OHP-based chemotherapy regimen. Colorectal cancer patients were given bimonthly CPT-11 as a 90-min infusion, followed by OHP (85 mg/m2), FA (200 mg/m2) 2-h infusions and 5-FU (48-h infusion). CPT-11 and 5-FU doses were escalated as reported below. 26 patients were recruited. Fourteen patients had received a prior CPT-11-, 6 patients a prior OHP-based chemotherapy regimen and 6 patients both regimens. Three dose levels were investigated: CPT-11 100, 120 and 140 mg/m2 and 5-FU 1500, 1800 and 2100 mg/m2 in 6, 12 and 8 patients, respectively. All patients were evaluable for toxicity, 24 for antitumor activity. At all dose levels toxicity was acceptable. Grade 4 toxicity occurred in two patients only (neutropenia in one case and stomatitis in another one, 3.8%). Grade 3 toxicities included nausea and vomiting (34.6%), asthenia (26.9%), neurosensory toxicity (15.4%), neutropenia (3.8%) and diarrhea (3.8%). Hematological toxicity was infrequent and generally mild. At the third dose level, a higher, although not significantly different incidence of hematological and neurosensory toxicity (both occurring in 62.5% of cases, all grades) was observed compared to the other two, while nausea and vomiting were significantly less frequent (37.5% vs 100%). Overall, we observed 2 complete responses, 9 partial responses (OR 45.8%), 8 stable disease (33.3%), and 5 disease progression (20.8%). Median overall survival was 18 months and median time-to-progression 5.5 months. This combination showed moderate toxicity and promising antitumor activity in CPT-11 and/or OHP pretreated colorectal cancer patients. The second dose level using CPT-11 at 120 mg/m2 and 5-FU at 1800 mg/m2 is recommended for further phase II studies in this patient population. © E.S.I.F.T. srl - Firenze
Steam turbine rotor stress control through nonlinear model predictive control
No full textThe current flexibility of the energy market requires operating steam turbines that have challenging operation requirements such as variable steam conditions and higher number of startups. This article proposes an advanced control system based on the Nonlinear Model Predictive Control (NMPC) technique, which allows to speed up the start-up of steam turbines and increase the energy produced while maintaining rotor stress as a constraint variable. A soft sensor for the online calculation of rotor stress is presented together with the steam turbine control logic. Then, we present how the computational cost of the controller was contained by reducing the order of the formulation of the optimization problem, adjusting the scheduling of the optimizer routine, and tuning the parameters of the controller itself. The performance of the control system has been compared with respect to the PI Controller architecture fed by the soft sensor results and with standard pre-calculated curves. The control architecture was evaluated in a simulation exploiting actual data from a Concentrated Solar Power Plant. The NMPC technique shows an increase in performance, with respect to the custom PI control application, and encouraging results

teleoperation system.
The teleoperation system is a master-slave bilateral system
based on two parallel kinematics robots with three degree of
freedom, which has been devised for the validation of robotics
assisted surgery procedures. Both master and slave systems
present an isomorphic kinematics which allow only translational
motion of the end-effector.
The aim of the present work is to evaluate two different
implementations of a Force Reflection control architectures: a
Position Error Based Force Reflection Control and a Direct
Force Reflection Control. The two architectures are compared
in terms of performance, i.e. stability and transparency, on the
basis of both simulations and experimental data. Some novel
theoretical results are presented, which permit a direct evaluation
of performance for both the two architectures
The Spritztube: A New Device for the Extraglottic Intubation of Rabbits
Get PDFThe Spritztube (ST) is an extraglottic airway device developed for humans. The aim of the study was to design an ST for rabbits and to evaluate its feasibility. The study was divided into two phases. Phase I: anatomical study on 12 rabbit cadavers to design 2 STs (8 and 10 Ch, external diameter) for rabbits. Phase II: fourteen privately owned rabbits were anaesthetised, and intubation was attempted using a ST. Tube size, the method for confirming the correct positioning, the number of attempts, the time needed for the correct positioning of the ST and complications were recorded. The ST placement was feasible in all rabbits. The positioning of the ST was completed in 2.1 ± 1 attempts in 43 ± 21.4 s. A correct placement was confirmed by the visualisation of the proximal cuff at visual inspection of the oral cavity (14/14), by the detection of the airflow (9/14 rabbits) and by the visualisation of a capnographic wave (14/14 rabbits). Only one rabbit developed respiratory distress after the ST placement. The results of the present study allowed designing a ST specific for rabbits which was used a supraglottic airway device for the maintenance of isoflurane anaesthesia in spontaneously breathing rabbits
Parent's acquaintance with curriculum reform
Get PDFThis thesis is of a theoretical nature: it does not include any field research. It includes a proposal for an elementary school brochure-guide for parents in Czech Republic, created by the author of this thesis. The thesis summarizes findings on the educational curriculum reform in the Czech Republic, which took place in 2007, and analyses ways in which parents were informed. The text focuses first on the reform itself, its objectives and its basic features. It then analyses the relationship between family and school, stating that parents as a group are of major importance for the successful implementation of the reform. It is therefore crucial to properly understand this group. In connection with the reform and its importance for parents, the text deals with how the informational campaign was conceived in the Czech Republic and in the UK. The 'Guide for Parents of English pupils aged 5 to 7 years' is then described as a source of ideas. Based on this, a proposal for a brochure-guide was created to be used as informational material for parents in the Czech Republic

a una maggiore probabilità di fumare in
gravidanza in un campione di donne afferenti
ai Punti nascita delle tre Aziende ospedalierouniversitarie
della Regione Toscana.
DISEGNO: studio multicentrico osservazionale
e prospettico.
SETTING E PARTECIPANTI: sono state arruolate
1.036 donne a termine di gravidanza nelle
Aziende ospedaliero-universitarie di Careggi
(Firenze), Pisa e Siena. Le donne hanno compilato
un questionario standardizzato autosomministrato
all’arruolamento; alle fumatrici,
alle ex-fumatrici e alle astinenti in gravidanza
è stato somministrato telefonicamente un secondo
questionario dopo un anno dal parto.
RISULTATI: il 60,5% delle donne non aveva
mai fumato; il 17,4% aveva smesso da almeno
6 mesi prima della gravidanza; il 14% aveva
smesso in gravidanza; l’8,4% fumava in gravidanza.
Essere fumatrice in gravidanza era significativamente
associato all’avere un’età inferiore
a 31 anni (OR: 1,37; IC95%1,01-1,84), essere
nubile (OR: 1,75; IC95%1,10-2,78), avere un
livello di studio corrispondente alla scuola dell’obbligo o inferiore (OR: 2,31; IC95% 1,58-
3,36), avere un marito/partner fumatore (OR:
3,03; IC95% 2,32-3,96). La probabilità assoluta
(rischio assoluto) di essere fumatrice in
gravidanza, calcolata cumulando i rischi significativi
associati alle varie condizioni sopra elencate,
era pari al 42%. Il 44% delle donne che
avevano smesso di fumare in gravidanza aveva
ripreso a un anno dal parto.
CONCLUSIONE: una percentuale non trascurabile
di donne afferenti alle Aziende ospedalierouniversitarie
toscane fuma in gravidanza e, fra
coloro che smettono, il numero di ricadute
dopo il parto è elevato. Nonostante in Italia
siano stati recentemente realizzati interventi legislativi
volti alla protezione dei danni da fumo
passivo, particolarmente rilevanti in epoca gestazionale
e durante l’infanzia, si evidenzia una
scarsa attenzione a queste problematiche. Si dovrebbe
promuovere la formazione di abilità specifiche
delle diverse figure sanitarie che seguono
la donna in gravidanza e subito dopo il parto, al
fine di incentivare la disassuefazione tabagica di
queste ultime
