    Lipid-based nanosystems have been widely proposed as novel drug carrier systems since they have gained interest as matrixes able to dissolve and to control the delivery of active molecules, on one hand improving their solubility in water and their bioavailability and on the other reducing side-effects. Among nanoparticles based on lipids one can mention (a) solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) that add up the benefit of colloidal lipid emulsions and those of solid matrix particles; (b) nanostructured lipid carriers (NLC), an evolution of SLN typified by a blend of a solid lipid matrix and a liquid lipid phase and (c) monooleine aqueous dispersions (MAD) that are heterogeneous systems made by a complex lyotropic liquid crystalline nanostructures such as micelles and lamellar, hexagonal, and cubic phases. Concerning their morphological characterization, X-ray diffraction and microscopy are used in order to obtain information about shape, inner structure, dimensions of powders and dispersions that could not otherwise be identified. Notably, this chapter provides an overview of the above mentioned lipid-based nanosystems loaded with some phytoconstituents studied by our research group

    Thermal weed control: History, mechanisms, and impacts

    In the recent years, there has been a revival in the development and improvement of thermal weed control to deliver heat for weed management. Thermal weed control techniques are based on foliar contact mechanisms in which temperatures of approximately 100°C are applied for the duration of few seconds, resulting in intracellular water expansion and cell membrane rupture. Nowadays, several heat machines are being developed in many countries, which can be used to deliver heat for controlling weeds. Several biological and technical factors, including the weed type and their stage, soil properties, and energy consumption of the system, influence the practicability of these thermal weed control options. In this chapter, the impact of heat energy on the plant and soil/microbes and methods for the application of heat to control weeds, their mechanism, and merits or demerits has been discussed

    Ecologically based weed management strategies

    Weeds are the most important biological constraints in crop production systems. Herbicides are used to manage weeds; however, a heavy reliance on herbicides is not sustainable in the long run. Therefore, there is a need to develop ecologically based weed management strategies in different crop production systems, which aim to reduce the weed seed bank before crop sowing and reduce weed emergence and weed growth in crops. Some of the strategies to reduce the seed bank before crop sowing are the use of the stale seedbed technique and the adoption of practices that enhance seed predation and seed decay. Strategies to reduce weed emergence and weed growth in crops may include the use of appropriate tillage systems; retention of crop residue on the soil surface; the use of crop cultivars with weed competitiveness, allelopathy, and tolerance of germination under anaerobic conditions; the use of a high crop density; and the use of narrow row spacing. This chapter aims to provide a perspective on what can be done to improve ecologically based weed management strategies
