Securing XML documents with author-X
Author-X is a Java-based system that addresses the security issues of access control and policy design for XML document administration. Author-X supports the specification of policies at varying granularity levels and the specification of user credentials as a way to enforce access control. Access control is available according to both push and pull document distribution policies, and document updates are distributed through a combination of hash functions and digital signature techniques. The Author-X approach to distributed updates allows a user to verify a document's integrity without contacting the document server
Evolving multimedia ontologies: the BSM tool environment
Goal of this paper is to present the BOEMIE Semantic Manager (BSM) tool environment providing advanced tool-assisted functionalities for domain experts and content managers to support design and evolution of ontology knowledge about multimedia resources. In particular, key features of the tool are i) the capability to figure out the different situations where available background knowledge is not sufficient for multimedia resource interpretation, and ii) the capability to support the design of the missing knowledge not only through the traditional "from scratch" approach, but also by enforcing the (re)use of externally harvested matching knowledge chunks
Semantically routing queries in peer-based systems : the H-Link approach
A challenging issue to advance the existing P2P semantic routing protocols is related to the capability of developing mechanisms for focused selection of the query recipients by taking into account a semantically rich description of the context of each peer. In this article, we present the H-Link semantic routing approach designed to exploit the results of an ontology matchmaking process for providing a semantic overlay network where peers having similar contexts are recognized and interlinked as semantic neighbors. In particular, H-Link aims at advancing the existing semantic routing protocols by combining ontology-based peer context descriptions and ontology matching techniques for providing query forwarding on a real semantic basis, in a completely decentralized way
A schema analysis and reconciliation tool environment for heterogeneous databases
To support the development of uniform query interfaces over distributed and heterogeneous databases, tools for the analysis and reconciliation of database conceptual schemas are required. The paper presents the ARTEMIS tool environment developed to support the analyst in the process of analyzing and reconciling sets of heterogeneous data schemas. Schema analysis in ARTEMIS is performed according to the concept of affinity, while schema reconciliation is performed interactively on clusters of elements with affinity, based on unification rules. Issues on expected tool interaction and on experimentation and applicability of ARTEMIS are discusse
