The is exhibition was about contemporary portraiture and representations of history, culture, class and race. It included artists from the Arts Council Collection and Birmingham’s collection and was inspired by Aston Hall and its location. The past 400 years have seen many changes in the social, demographic and economic landscape that surrounds Aston Hall. Work in painting, tapestry, photography, film, sculpture and ceramics offered contemporary observations of people from around the world. Artists included Faisal Abdu’Allah and Kofi Allen, Vanley Burke, Lisa Cheung, Sylvester Jacobs, Mawuena Kattah, Ryan Mosley, Eugene Palmer, Paul Rooney, Zineb Sedira, Donald Rodney, Stephen Earl Rogers, Emma Rushton, Barbara Walker, Richard Wilson and Lynette Yiadom-Boakye

Servitization and enterprization in the construction industry:the case of a specialist subcontractor

    No full text
The current economic climate and a continuing fall in output of the UK construction industry has led to falling prices and margins particularly affecting those lower down in the supply chain such as specialist subcontractors. Coen Ltd. is one such company based in the West Midlands. Faced with a need to up its game it has embarked on a business improvement programme concentrating on better operational efficiency, building stronger client relationships and delivering value added services. Lacking appropriate internal resources Coen has joined with Aston Business School in a 2 year ERDF sponsored project to fulfil the transformation programme. The paper will describe the evolution of product- service offerings in construction and link this with the work being carried out at Coen with Aston and outline the anticipated outcomes

Review of the Aston Project: Report.

The Aston Project is a community focused initiative that identifies at-risk young people and links them with resources or activities within their local communities. It is managed by Gloucestershire Constabulary and operates at three sites across Gloucestershire: Cheltenham, Gloucester, and Newent. This review evaluates the impact of the Aston Project, and identifies examples of good practice and areas for potential improvement. It was funded by the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Gloucestershire, and conducted by academics and researchers in the School of Natural and Social Sciences at the University of Gloucestershire. Between April and December 2016, the University researchers spoke to thirteen members of the Aston Project team, conducted focus groups with participating Young People, and analysed a range of documents, reports and other supporting evidence relating to the Aston Project. The review concludes that there are a range of clear successes from the Aston Project and that there is evidence of positive impact on the lives of young people and communities across Gloucestershire. There is, however, both the need and opportunity to develop aspects of the Aston Project

Mobile app Aston contrast sensitivity test

    No full text
BACKGROUND: Contrast detection is an important aspect of the assessment of visual function; however, clinical tests evaluate limited spatial frequencies and contrasts. This study validates the accuracy and inter-test repeatability of a swept-frequency near and distance mobile app Aston contrast sensitivity test, which overcomes this limitation compared to traditional charts. METHOD: Twenty subjects wearing their full refractive correction underwent contrast sensitivity testing on the new near application (near app), distance app, CSV-1000 and Pelli-Robson charts with full correction and with vision degraded by 0.8 and 0.2 Bangerter degradation foils. In addition repeated measures using the 0.8 occluding foil were taken. RESULTS: The mobile apps (near more than distance, p = 0.005) recorded a higher contrast sensitivity than printed tests (p  0.05). Although the coefficient of repeatability was lowest for the Pelli-Robson charts (0.14 log units), the mobile app charts measured more spatial frequencies, took less time and were more repeatable (near: 0.26 to 0.37 log units; distance: 0.34 to 0.39 log units) than the CSV-1000 (0.30 to 0.93 log units). The duration to complete the CSV-1000 was 124 ± 37 seconds, Pelli-Robson 78 ± 27 seconds, near app 53 ± 15 seconds and distance app 107 ± 36 seconds. CONCLUSIONS: While there were differences between charts in contrast levels measured, the new Aston near and distance apps are valid, repeatable and time-efficient method of assessing contrast sensitivity at multiple spatial frequencies
