``The absence of the difference from a pot is potness'' -- Axiomatic Proofs of Theorems Concerning Negative Properties in Navya-Ny\=aya
Get PDFThe present paper deals with an aspect of the Navya-Ny\=aya ``logic of property and location'' (Matilal) in classical Indian philosophy, namely the so-called ``absences'' (\textit{abh\=ava}). Following George Bealer (\textit{Quality and Concept}, Oxford 1982) we may regard these negative properties as the result of applying certain algebraic operations to property terms, which Bealer names after their corresponding propositional or first-order operations (``negation of a property'', ``conjunction of properties'', ``existential generalization of a property'' etc.). Bealer introduces these operations in his property theories in order to
explain how the denotation of a complex property term can be
determined from the denotation(s) of the relevant syntactically
simpler term(s). An interesting case in Navya-Ny\=aya is the ``conjoint absence'' (\textit{ubha\-y\=a\-bh\=a\-va}), which can be regarded as the Sheffer stroke applied to property terms.
We will show that an extension of Bealer's axiomatic
system T1 may serve to prove some of the Navya-Naiy\=ayikas'
intuitions concerning iterated absences, such as ``the relational
absence of the difference from a pot'', ``the relational absence of
the relational absence of a pot'' or ``the relational absence of the relational absence of the relational absence of a pot''. The former,
e.g., was claimed to be identical to the universal ``potness''

No full textAbstractSeismic retrofitting is the modification of existing structures so as to improve the system behaviour or its components repair/strengthening up to the performance it is expected. Detailed seismic evaluation and assessing the vulnerability of the structure are the key ingredients in order to arrive at an appropriate retrofitting scheme. This study proclaims a complete process of retrofitting on a building designed with two different philosophies i.e., as per IS 456: 2000 and IS 1893 (Part 1): 2002 and retrofitted with steel bracing. The fragility analysis was also carried out to indicate the probability of damage under different states which reduces considerably after retrofitting of building
Caste, Gender and Resistance: A Critical Study of Bama’s Sangathi
Get PDFDalit literature articulates the oppressions and exploitations
faced by Dalits in a caste ridden society. Dalit writing as a political form of
writing records the cultural and social lives of Dalits and ideologically the
writing offers a call for resistance. Bama is a Tamil Christian Dalit writer
who writes about the lives of Dalit Women in Tamil Nadu. This paper
attempts a look at Bama’s novel Sangathi as a site representing Dalit women
and analyses how caste and gender act as tools of double oppression in their
life. This critical feminist reading of the novel from a Dalit Feminist
perspective focuses on how women are discriminated in the Paraiya
community in their relations with different social institutions like education,
marriages, electoral politics etc. Simultaneously, we see how this text
through its form and theme builds up a resistance against the oppressions
the women face in their everyday lives
