    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Cultural heritage as stones of memory. The recovery of archives in the area of the Marche crater area

The seismic events of Central Italy between 2016 and 2017 have torn the lifeblood of many territories between Marche, Umbria, Lazio and Abruzzo. The most affected zone includes the area of the Sibillini Mountains and the upper Tronto valley. Even if the emergency state is exceeded, there are still many interventions to be implemented. Of course, the first allocations of funds must be directed to the physical reconstruction of the territories but it is also essential to deal with the restoration of social and identity recollection. For this reason, an integrated reading of cultural heritage (archives, libraries and museums) is essential to guarantee the survival of the memory of those communities that have been heavily damaged or even completely destroyed. Hence the need to create a scientific project shared between territories and stakeholders aimed at preserving the vast documentary heritage that lies in highly precarious conditions. The first phase of the project was dedicated to the recovery, description, reorganization and cataloguing of selected archives; subsequently a second phase of the project will be aimed at reconstructing the identity of the communities damaged by seismic events through a narrative and educational strand, so that citizens fully understand how the possible loss of archives is also equivalent to a loss of memory itself. A project dedicated to cultural heritage - stones of memory - so as not to lose the material and immaterial value that the institutes and places of culture preserve for their mission. The paper aims to return the methodological principles and the actions related to the project that is the recovery of archives in the area of the Marche crater. The contribution presents the planning phases of the first two projects started in the municipalities of Urbisaglia and Ussita. Furthermore, it returns a case of musealization and necessary recovery of the local memory

Michel Foucault and Judith Butler: troubling Butler's appropriation of Foucault's work

One of the main influences on Judith Butler‘s thinking has been the work of Michel Foucault. Although this relationship is often commented on, it is rarely discussed in any detail. My thesis makes a contribution in this area. It presents an analysis of Foucault‘s work with the aim of countering Butler‘s representation of his thinking. In the first part of the thesis, I show how Butler initially interprets Foucault‘s project through Nietzschean genealogy, psychoanalysis and Derridean discourse, and how she later develops this interpretation in line with the progress of her own project. In the main part of the thesis, I present an analysis of Foucault‘s thinking in the period from The Archaeology of Knowledge (1969) to The History of Sexuality volume 1 (1976). This analysis focuses on the aspect of his work which has most influenced Butler‘s thinking: namely the notion of a relationship between knowledge, discourse and power. The other issues in his work which Butler addresses—genealogy, the subject, the body, abnormality, and sexuality—are discussed within this framework. I show how, in the early 1970s, Foucault develops the notion of power-knowledge, and sets out a relationship between power-knowledge and discourse which is overlooked by Butler. I argue that Butler interprets Foucaultian power through the notions of repression and social norms, and ignores the concepts of technology and strategy which form a key part of Foucault‘s thinking. I show how, from The Archaeology of Knowledge on, Foucault develops a socio-historical ontology and a genealogy of the subject, both of which are at variance with Butler‘s interpretation of his thinking

Decentralisation, crisis and urban services in Europe. Two cases studies, one in Finland and one in Yugoslavia illustrate the concern for decentralisation all over Europe, and its insufficience in resolving local problems. Case studies led by an international group in fourteen European countries show that the social consequences of the crisis cannot be treated by just handing them down to be dealt with at a local level. New forms of relations must be invented between the local level and the central level. Ryser Judith. Décentralisation, crise et services urbains en Europe. In: Les Annales de la recherche urbaine, N°31, 1986.
