Starting from MacIntyre\u27s narrative description of epistemic crises they analyze the stories authors construct and the positions they take and ascribe to others within larger developing (grand) narratives on the value and function of literary reading. Both traditional narratives and new alternative (i.e., enlarged) narratives are discussed in how they set up and frame the argument and how they create dichotomies

No full textOn October 17, 2023, during the 100th Dies Natalis of Radboud University, Geert Corstens received an honorary doctorate from Radboud University. This honorary doctorate was awarded to him because of his tireless efforts for a strong, fair and equal constitutional state. This edition includes the laudation of honorary supervisor Roel Schutgens, the acceptance speech of Geert Corstens and the Van der Grint lecture given by Geert Corstens during the week of the Dies Natalis.
Geert Corstens was president of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands from 2008 to 2014. Immediately after his appointment, he was known for his assertive attitude towards the political apparatus. The independence of the constitutional state should not be threatened by the wishes and needs of politicians and other outsiders, Corstens believed. He has also made a formidable contribution to public-oriented communication and explanation of the rule of law. Corstens also wrote, among other things, the books Our constitutional state and The judge seizes power: And other misconceptions about the democratic constitutional state to promote general communication about rights and democracy in the Netherlands. Corstens is also the author of the standard work Dutch criminal procedural law and was professor of criminal law at Radboud University from 1982 to 1995

No full textThe reluctance to introduce popular films in teacher education has often focused on the generic and stereotypical aspects of school movies. Stereotypes of education are said to misrepresent teaching and learning and are the basis for critical discussions in classes for pre- service teachers. Rather than reject them, a nar- rative analysis will engage with these recurring patterns. School films can be described as equipment for living (Burke) and a company we keep (Booth) and provide narrative schemata. The British school film The History Boys is analyzed as a narrative that responds to a cultural tradition of representing teachers using stereotypes of dif- ferent pedagogies, literature teaching, and popu- lar culture

Science Fiction and a Rhetorical Analysis of the \u27Literature Myth\u27
Get PDFIn their article Science Fiction and a Rhetorical Analysis of the \u27Literature Myth\u27 Kris Rutten, Ronald Soetaert, and Geert Vandermeersche discuss what we can learn from science fiction about cultural literacy in general and literary culture in particular. From a theoretical and methodological perspective the authors start from the work of rhetorician Kenneth Burke. First, the authors conceptualize literature as equipment for living followed by a discussion of science fiction as equipment for living based on a description of the genre as satire by entelechy. Second, they analyze a selection of science fiction narratives using the dramatistic pentad as an analytical tool. The focus of the analysis is on how literature as agency is located in a futuristic scene. The article concludes with a discussion about how an analysis of the literature myth in science fiction narratives can be used to reflect on the rhetorical construction of cultural literacy

Get PDFIn their article Perspectives on Video Games as Art Jeroen Bourgonjon, Geert Vndermeersche, Kris Rutten and Niels Quinten engage in discussing whether or not video games can be considered a form of art. Although this question has already been discussed elaborately, the debate is guided by many different and often conflicting positions. The aim of this article is to revisit this debate by mapping out a range of perspectives on video games as art. The authors explore the relation between games and different definitions and functions of art, different motives of artists, and the potential impact of the arts. The authors postulate that the discussion about the art status of video games is neither singular nor straightforward, and that the artistic possibilities of video games should instead be assessed by confronting a number of interrelated perspectives

Elements of generalized ultrametric domain theory
Get PDFAbstractGeneralized ultrametric spaces are a common generalization of preorders and ordinary ultrametric spaces, as was observed by Lawvere (1973). Guided by his enriched-categorical view on (ultra)metric spaces, we generalize the standard notions of Cauchy sequence and limit in an (ultra)metric space, and of adjoint pair between preorders. This leads to a solution method for recursive domain equations that combines and extends the standard order-theoretic (Smyth and Plotkin, 1982) and metric (America and Rutten, 1989) approaches
