    De Poolse Binnenvaart

This report describes a visit to Poland by mr. R. Filarski and mr. J.U. Brolsma of the Transportation and Traffic Engineering Division of Rijkswaterstaat in the week of the 22nd through 26th of June 1992. The trip was guided by prof. dr. M. Milkowski. Inland navigation is not very important in Poland: no more than 1% of the transportation, no more than 1800 barges, average size 500 tons. Inland navigation is suffering from the economic recession. Since 1980 almost no inland barges were built, nevertheless there is overcapacity and many barges will have to be scrapped. The trade to Western Europe is too small to offer sufficient relieve. Moreover these Polish barges are competitors to our barges of 300 to 600 tons, that have already a hard time. The Polish waterway network consists of two South-northbound rivers Odra and Wisla and an east-west connection via Warta, Notec and Bydgoszcz Canal. The waterways are mostly in a bad shape. The canalized rivers are relatively the best. The free running rivers provide not enough waterdepth for efficient shipping. Barges sailing for Western Europe will also encounter problems at the crossing of the Mittellandkanal and the Elbe river. Therefore it is not expected that Poland will be an attractive destination for Dutch barges. The waterways that looks best from a point of view of civil-engineering and transportation is the Odra river. To our opinion this river should be improved first. The construction of a weir at Malczyce weir is urgent. The benefits of an improvement of the Odra river could be enlarged by a connection to the Wisla river near Krakow and canalizing the Upper Odra to Ostrava. Canalizing the Wisla river between Krakow and Gdansk is such a gigantic task, that one can not find justification now. The construction of an east-west connection between Germany and Belyorussia is of strategic importance on the long run. In Poland the Hydroproject company is preparing a feasibility study. In conclusion: the absence of cargo makes the urge to the west of Polish barges understandable. The Polish waterways certainly have potential, but it requires large investments beforehand, the Polish know very well

Adabiyotlarda mualliflar tomonidan burun to`sig`ining zamonaviy jarroxlik amaliyotlaridan eng ko’p uchraydigan holatlardan biri burundan qon ketishidir

Urban Literacy: A Scriptive Approach to the Experience, Use and Imagination of Place

    No full text
This dissertation discusses how literature offers valuable ways to become aware of how people experience, use, and imagine places. It argues that Lefebvre’s concept of "lived space", experienced and lived through by characters, evoking memories and imaginations, is the space that we encounter in the evocative descriptions of places and spaces by literary writers. The hypothesis of this work is that if existing literature can provide such insights, a literary approach using instruments from literature is also conceivable within the domain of architectural research and even of architectural design. To address the different perspectives that a literary approach to architecture can provide, the work proposes a triad of interrelated concepts: description, transcription and prescription. Each of the three branches of this literary bridge connects to a slightly different discourse and examples of architectural and literary practices. Together, the terms description, transcription and prescription supply a framework to address lived experience and develop tools for spatial research and design. Literary references include Proust, Calvino, Oulipo, Breton, Aragon, Joyce and Danielewski, while the work of architects Steven Holl, Bernard Tschumi and Rem Koolhaas are discussed as "scriptive" architectural practices.ArchitectureArchitectur

    No full text

Portfolio Planning Methods: Faulty Approach or Faulty Research? A Rejoinder to 'Making Better Decisions' by Wensley

    No full text
Wensley (1994) makes three key points. First, it is worthwhile to conduct empirical studies of the value of management techniques. Second, managers probably misuse portfolio methods. Third, the Armstrong and Brodie study is flawed. We agree with all three points.marketing, portfolio planning methods

    Richtlijnen Vaarwegen 2011

    No full text

    Waterway guidelines 2011

    No full text
The Waterway Guidelines cover only: \u95 the transport engineering design; the structural design is beyond the scope of the Guidelines; \u95 waterways in CEMT classes I to V and recreational waterways; \u95 waterways without currents or with a longitudinal current up to 0.5 m/s; \u95 waterways that are not primarily intended for sea shipping; \u95 waterways other than the shipping lanes in the North Sea or Wadden Sea. Since, in practice, a need for specification of the dimensions and characteristics of reference motor vessels, pushed convoys and coupled units in class VI has become apparent, these have been included in chapter 2. They serve as a basis for the design of class VI waterways. However, given the fact that there has been insufficient research into the translation of class VI into dimensions for waterway sections and engineering structures, the scope of the Waterway Guidelines will remain limited to classes I to V for the time being. Waterways larger than class V can be regarded as exceptional cases, which will always require special investigation. It would not be wise simply to extrapolate the figures in the Guidelines
