Framing the new social-service innovation mindset
This chapter addresses a proposal for an integrated perspective on social-service innovation. In particular, research effort is devoted to developing a framework that captures the challenges of new social issues within the contemporary landscape of service innovation. The research interest is twofold: (1) to understand conceptually how social and service innovation perspectives can be combined into a more integrated approach and (2) to provide a social-service innovation framework within which to understand how social innovation can be built onto concepts and practices of service innovation logic. Building on insights and categories from the existing literature on social innovation and service innovation, the chapter identifies five issues that are integral to the proposed social- service innovation framework. The proposed framework aims to add to the efforts of scholars in developing new ideas, concepts and tools that more deeply explicate the complex and multifaceted nature, structure and processes of social innovation. By combining the main social and service dimensions, it addresses the opportunity for furthering research discussion and practical implications concerning a new social innovation mindset
Plastic litter transfer from sediments towards marine trophic webs: A case study on holothurians
This study estimates for the very first time plastic litter levels in sea cucumbers (Echinodermata, Holothuroidea) sampled in situ and their intakes from sediments in three different rocky bottom habitats (slides, cliff, banks) settled in Salina Island (Aeolian Archipelago). Macroplastic were never recorded while meso- and microplastics were identified in all sediment (81–438 items/kg d.w.) and animal samples (1.8–22 items/ind.). Plastic intakes by sea cucumbers resulted frequently associated to the size range included within 100–2000 μm. Over than 70% of ingested plastic litter is represented by the size fraction >500 μm. Sediment/animals ratios % are included 2.7 ± 2.0% in studied habitats with a selective intake of fragments occurring in slides. Furthermore, results support the occurrence of selective ingestion of plastic litter by holothurians in natural environments underlining the role of these species in microplastic transfer from abiotic towards biotic compartments of the marine trophic web
Diatom-based genetic engineering system methodology for the eco-sustainable production of ovothiols
The present invention relates to the field of biotechnology, in particular it relates to the set-up of a protocol
of enzymatic engineering of the diatom species Phaeodactylum tricornutum to overexpress the biosynthetic
enzyme leading to ovothiol production. This protocol is eco-sustainable because it uses cells and nutrients
for biosynthesis and does not produce toxic side-compounds.
Microalgal biomass moreover can be exploited for additional uses after ovothiol extraction, making the
production process more cost-effective. The production of ovothiols is relevant for the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, and cosmeceutical sectors
Time and space for value co-creation
The study focuses on The Temporary Shops, the recently communication and distribution innovation used by firm in order to improve interaction with customers and to reinforce brand loyalty and equity. The main aim of the study is to frame the Temporary Shop phenomenon in Italy and to analyse its value co-creation potential.
Through the Dart Model proposed by Prahalad and Ramaswamy (2004) we in-depth study the temporary shops of 4 leader companies. The findings show as temporary shops are value co-creation locus in which the interactive and experiential relationship between the firm and the customer is engaged and the co-operation to co-create value emerges
Store experience and co-creation: The case of temporary shop
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to focus on Temporary Shops, a recent communication and distribution innovation used by firms in order to improve interaction with customers and to reinforce brand loyalty and equity. The main aim of the study is to frame the Temporary Shops phenomenon in Italy and to analyze its value co-creation potential. Design/methodology/approach: The DART model proposed by Prahalad and Ramaswamy has been chosen as the theoretical framework for understanding the Temporary Shops phenomenon. The authors investigate the process of value co-creation inside the Temporary Shops through its four key building blocks, namely, dialogue, access, risk/benefits and transparency. Through a multiple-case study, the authors study in-depth evidence from five leading firms that represent the main Temporary Shops in Italy over the last two years. Findings: Temporary Shops provide a locus of value co-creation in which the interactive and experiential relationship between the firm and the customer is engaged and value co-creation emerges. Research limitations/implications: There are two main limitations: this study is exploratory and analyzes co-creation only from the company perspective. Further studies may widen the unit of analysis from firm to customer's network and thus provide further insights about antecedents and implications of the interaction in a multi-sensory context. Originality/value: The work contributes to understanding the role of experiential environment in value co-creation processes, as well as analyzing the contribution of a new distribution phenomenon with respect to co-creation through the application of the DART model. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited
