'You Make Me Sick’: An interview with Puss Johnson and Steve Eagles of Satan’s Cats
Get PDFFormed in Evesham, Worcestershire, in January 1977, Satan’s Rats released three superb but commercially unsuccessful singles in a period of a little more than eighteen months before splitting up. Guitarist Steve Eagles, drummer Olly Harrison and bassist Dave Sparrow then teamed up with Wendy Wu (Wendy Yates) to form The Photos, a new wave group that achieved a major label record deal and went on to a measure of chart success in the early 1980s. The band has recently reformed with a new guest vocalist, Puss Johnson, under the moniker Satan’s Cats. Get PDFIn the double issue special edition of Punk & Post Punk, 4.2/4.3, Russ Bestley wrote a provocative article entitled ‘(I want some) demystification: Deconstructing punk’, reflecting on punk scholarship and the tropes and stereotypes that may be narrowing discourse on the subculture. In one section of the essay, the author questioned the value of a number of books on punk as a lifestyle and philosophy, including Craig O’Hara’s The Philosophy of Punk: More Than Noise! (1999), Lars J. Kristiansen’s Screaming For Change: Articulating a Unifying Philosophy of Punk Rock (2012) and Robin Ryde’s The Truth of Revolution, Brother: The Philosophies of Punk (2014) (Bestley 2015: 119). Robin Ryde reached out to challenge some of the points raised in the original article and exercise a right to reply. This led to an extended dialogue between the two authors, which we have decided to reproduce in edited form here, along with a ‘think piece’ essay by Ryde reflecting on a range of contemporary attitudes towards punk and questioning where our subculture might be heading

A first edition of this book was originally produced as a very short run proof print via the University of Porto, Portugal, in conjunction with KISMIF and the Punk Scholars Network. At that stage, the original named editors were Dines, Gordon and Guerra and Russ Bestley worked as graphic designer to pull the project together and create a final book layout. Bestley was also heavily involved in editing and proofing the various stages of the book through to printing. played a major part in not just the visual outcome of that content but also the editing (arranging and selecting material, text editing and visual editing), acting as more than simply someone who makes a graphic ‘product’ and in more of a consultancy role on how best to present the content to its audience.
Russ Bestley then represented the editors and the Punk Scholars Network in negotiations to rework the book as a new title through Intellect Books and The University of Chicago Press, with a new ISBN and some text/layout changes. This is the first volume in a contracted book series entitled Global Punk. Russ Bestley, Mike Dines, Alastair “Gords” Gordon and Paula Guerra are named series editors for Global Punk and Bestley has been added as co-editor for this (public) issue of The Punk Reader, with text and layout revisions and a new ISBN publication number
