    A Study on The Utilization of Local Coconut Timber Waste as Sustainable Building Material

    This paper performs a study into the use of local coconut timber waste as an alternative building material to build earthquake-resistant timber house in Indonesia. The goals of this research are: (1) to design a model of earthquake-resistant house made of local coconut timber waste, and (2) to present structural analysis of the house under earthquake load. Research methods include design of an earthquake-resistant local-timber house, estimation of the dimensions of structural elements of earthquake-resistant local-timber house; and analysis of the performance of the timber house under earthquake load with structural software for building analysis and design. Outcomes from this study are expected to promote the beneficial usage of the potentially of local timber waste as construction material for timber house in an effort to mitigate the risk of earthquake hazard

    This feasibility study aims to assess the potential of implementing a micro hydro system in Lalumpe Village, located in North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The study focuses on evaluating the technical and economic aspects of the proposed micro hydro project. Data collection was carried out through field surveys, interviews with local stakeholders, and analysis of available hydrological and topographical data. The technical assessment involved conducting a resource assessment to determine the water availability and potential for harnessing hydroelectric power in the area. The study also examined the village’s energy demand and determined the suitable capacity of the micro hydro system required to meet the community’s needs. Economic analysis included estimating the initial investment costs, operation and maintenance expenses, and potential revenue generation from the sale of excess electricity to the local grid. Financial viability indicators such as payback period and net present value were calculated to assess the economic feasibility of the project

    This community service aims to apply the technology of independence supply electricity based on renewable source of energy that is available locally. This technology is applied in Kiama village that is located in the remote island of Talaud. The problems regarding the limited access of electricity have been faced by the coastal community in Talaud Island. The water pump supplied by solar energy is the most suitable technology to be applied in the area that has limited access to electricity grid. The method of implementing this partner village development program consists of several stages, namely: (1) Application of suitable technology for solar water pump to supply water tank; (2) Transfer technology based on renewable energy utilization to increase knowledge and skills for the community in the remote village. The beneficial aspect of this activity is to improve the knowledge of society toward the renewable energy utilization and to improve of community standard lives toward the access of electricity, independently. The program implementations were designed and built-up of water pump powered by solar energy technology and the one unit installation of the technology to a church in the Kiama village. The results obtained from this activity are improvement of the welfare and the comfort of people\u27s lives due to access to electricity. Regarding appropriate technology applied for the remote communities.   Abstrak: Pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk menerapkan teknologi keman­diri­an penyediaan tenaga listrik berbasis sumber energi terbarukan yang tersedia secara lokal. Teknologi ini diterapkan di Desa Kiama yang terletak di pulau terpencil Talaud. Per­masalah­an keterbatasan akses listrik telah dihadapi oleh masyarakat pesisir di Pulau Talaud. Pompa air yang disuplai tenaga surya merupakan teknologi yang paling cocok diterapkan di daerah yang akses jaringan listriknya terbatas.     Fokus kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat di desa Kiama ini untuk memberikan solusi terhadap masalah keterbatasan energi listrik yang dialami oleh masyarakat di kepulauan Talaud. Tujuan pengabdian masyarakat sebagai hilirisasi hasil riset penulis tentang teknologi energi terbarukan untuk masyarakat kepulauan. Metode pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah (1) Penerapan teknologi tepat guna berbasis energi terbarukan berupa lampu jalan tenaga surya dan tenaga angin untuk peningkatan akses listrik; (2) Pelatihan dan bimbingan teknis oleh tim pelaksana kepada mitra mengenai pengoperasian dan perawatan sistem teknologi tepat guna yang diterapkan.     A study into flexural, compressive and tensile strength of coir-concrete as sustainable building material

    Coir has been known as a potential natural fiber for many sustainable construction material developments due to its wide availability and sustainable resource of coconut tree. This research study aims to investigate the flexural, compressive and tensile properties of concrete incorporating coir fiber and to find the fiber content which gives optimum results. In this study, coir concrete specimens were cast and tested with variations of fiber content of 0%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 0.75%, and 1% by weight of aggregates. Flexural test was conducted based on SNI 4431:2011, compressive test was conducted based on SNI 1974:2011 and tensile test was conducted based on SNI 2491:2014. Slump tests and unit weight showed reduced values when fiber content was increased. Flexural, compressive and tensile strengths of coir-concrete at a 28-day curing were optimum for the variation with 0.25% fiber content. Compressive strength of control concrete at 28 days was approximately 23 MPa while BS-0.25 was 27.5 MPa. Flexural strength of control concrete was 5 MPa while BS-0.25 was 6 MPa. Tensile strength of control concrete was 3 MPa while BS-0.25 was 2.5 MPa. Results from the study showed that the presence of 0.25% fiber (by total weight of aggregate) in the concrete gives approximately 19% improvement in 28 days compressive strength and flexural strength
