High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) is a growing technology due to the necessities of electric connection between islands, offshore wind farms, oil platforms, the electrification of transports and other future applications in the electric sector. This work presents a methodology that is used to design the control of the multi-terminal HVDC grids interconnecting offshore wind farms with the main onshore electrical grid. The methodology is detailed in this Thesis also including relevant information about converters and HVDC is presented. First, two simple models are analyzed to illustrate the studied control system, the first one is the Voltage Source Converter (VSC) operating in power control mode and the second one is the VSC grid converter operating in DC voltage control mode. Moreover, the control design methodology is applied in a case of a multi-terminal HVDC grid formed by four terminals. The main objective is to analyze the best range of values of the DC primary voltage regulator considering the limitations for each electrical magnitude during both the transient response and the steady state. To perform this analysis, several scenarios have been evaluated through simulation models using the software Matlab-Simulink®. Note: The schemes, the code and the graphs that have been performed in Matlab-Simulink® are shown and explained in the Annexes document. The files created in Matlab-Simulink® to perform this Thesis has been uploaded to the online repository GitHub. The files are available at https://github.com/silos94/TFM-Victor-Silos-Sanchez. Nevertheless, for space limitations, the files extracted from simulations, which they are composed by figures and data, could not be uploaded to GitHub. Giovanni Verga (1879-1923), author of a pioneering treatise on pituitary surgery: the foundations of this new field in Europe in the early 1900s

    No full text
The field of pituitary surgery was born in the first decade of the twentieth century in Europe, and it evolved rapidly with the development of numerous innovative surgical techniques by some of the founding fathers of neurosurgery. This study investigates the pioneering Italian treatise on pituitary surgery, La Patologia Chirurgica dell’Ipofisi (Surgical Pathology of the Hypophysis), published in 1911 by Giovanni Verga (1879–1923), a surgeon from Pavía andone of Golgi’s disciples. This little-known monograph compiles the earliest experience on pituitary surgery through the analysis of the first 50 procedures performed between 1903 and 1911. We conducted a biographical survey of Giovanni Verga and the motivations for his work on pituitary surgery. In addition, a systematic analysis of all original reports andhistorical documents about these pituitary procedures referenced in Verga’s treatise was carried out. Verga’s treatise provides a summary of the techniques employed and surgical outcomes for the first 50 attempted procedures of pituitarytumor removal. This monograph is the only scientific source that includes a complete account of the series of 10 pituitary tumors operated on by Sir Victor Horsley in the 1900s. Three major types of surgery were employed: (i) palliative procedures of craniectomy (n = 6); (ii) transcranial approaches to the pituitary gland, either subfrontal or subtemporal (n = 13); and (iii) transphenoidal routes to expose the sella turcica, either using an upper transnasal-transethmoidal approach (n = 19) or a lower sublabial/endonasal-transeptal one (n = 12). An operative mortality rate of 36% (n = 17) was observed in these early series. The pathological nature of the tumors operated on was available in 42 cases. There were 28 adenomas and 15 craniopharyngiomas. Sir Victor Horsley (1857–1916) and the Viennese surgeons Anton von Eiselsberg (1860–1939) and Oskar Hirsch (1877–1965) were the leading European figures in the development of pituitary surgery. Giovanni Verga’s treatise La Patologia Chirurgica dell’Ipofisi is a fundamental, pioneering book in the history of pituitary surgery, a work that compiles the foundations of this field in Europe and the only authoritative source providing a complete record of pituitary procedures performed by Sir Victor Horsle

OPTIMAL PRICING AND GRANT POLICIES FOR MUSEUMS

    Get PDF
Considering two potential sources of income (public grants and ticket revenues),we have defined a theoretical model where the public agency is the principal and the manager of the museum is the agent. This model allows us to design the optimal contract between both sides and thus to establish the optimal values of grants, ticket prices, budget and effort applied by the manager. Furthermore, we have found a theoretical reason to explain the inelastic pricing strategy that has been found in some of the empirical research on cultural and sports economics. The main conclusion is that the optimal contract allows a Pareto optimum solution in prices that does not change if we introduce moral hazard into this relationship. This solution allows us to conclude that the public agency should regulate ticket prices in accordance with the social valuation. However, public grants and museum budgets would be affected by the existence of this problem, moving the equilibrium away from the Pareto optimum situation. In this case, even with a risk averse manager and a risk neutral public agency, grants and budgets will depend on results because higher budgets related to good results provide the main incentives to increase the manager’s level of effort. Although the focus of this paper is on museum administration, the model that we have developed can be easily generalized and applied to other institutions, such as schools, sport facilities or NGOs, which are able to raise funds directly from private (e. g. ticket revenues or membership fees) or public sources (e.g. public grants).cultural economics, grants, public prices, museums, principal- agent model

Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET), Universidad Nacional de la Patagonia San Juan Bosco; Argentina. This work characterizes a previously unknown outcrop of Upper Cretaceous porphyritic rocks near the area of Gastre in Northern Argentinean Patagonia. It is based on petrographic, geochronological and geochemical data of representative samples. The porphyritic rocks from Gastre were dated between ~74 and 76 Ma, when a gap or waning in activity was registered in the Northern Patagonian Batholith. The age of the porphyritic rocks from Gastre coincides with the age of the upper section of the Tres Picos Prieto Formation, a basaltic sequence located at 44° S, near the locality of José de San Martín. Farther southwest, in the Coihaique Alto region in Chile at 45° S, the volcanic rocks from the Casa de Piedra Volcanic Complex and the El Toro Formation also bear a similar Late Cretaceous age (Demant et al. 2007). The porphyritic rocks from Gastre bear a geochemical signature typical of subduction-derived magmas, which is also found in the Tres Picos Prieto basalts (especially of the upper section, Zaffarana et al. 2012) and in the volcanics from the Coihaique Alto region (Demant et al. 2007). Therefore, it is put forth that the porphyritic rocks from Gastre could represent an eastward shift in the position of the magmatic arc at 42° S, as they were erupted c. 270 km away from the axis of the magmatic arc (represented by the outcrops of the Northern Patagonian Batholith). This eastward migration of the magmatic arc was probably the result of a slabshallowing process; slab shallowing was also argued to explain the Late Cretaceous compressive deformation observed in the Gastre area (Echaurren et al. 2017). Nevertheless, it should be noted that during the Late Cretaceous the magmatic arc regained its westward position farther south at the latitude of the Coihaique Alto region

Self-mentions in design area disciplines: A corpus analysis

    No full text
This study analyzes the self-mention forms represented by first-person pronouns (I, me, my, we, us, and our), self-citations, and other forms of mentions made by the same author(s) in each article (e.g., this writer, the author, the authors, the research team) in a corpus of academic articles (625,195 words) in Design area disciplines to determine the similarities and differences in self-mention practices within these disciplines and the previous findings reported in the literature of authorial self-representation observed in hard and soft fields. A quantitative approach using the method employed by Hyland in 2001 [23] explored a corpus of 100 academic empirical and theoretical articles on visual arts, design, architecture, and art and design education (25 for each discipline) obtained from Q1 and Q2 journals listed in the Visual Arts and Performing Arts subject area of Scopus. The results suggest that self-mention practices in Design area disciplines share similarities and differences with the authorial self-representation in soft and hard fields previously reported in the literature by Hyland in 2001 [23] and Dixon in 2022 [24]. Overall, self-mentions in Design area disciplines resemble the authorial self-representation practices in soft fields. However, self-mentions in architecture tend to use the impersonal writing of hard fields because this discipline has a close historical relationship with engineering. This is the first corpus analysis of self-mention practices in academic articles in the Design area disciplines. The implications of the findings for academic literacy are also discussed

Purpose/Context. This article seeks to describe from a bioethical approach how obesity and overweight are a pandemic problem not only for public health. This multifactorial problem requires a convergent view from different disciplines to guide actions around the right to health and the right to non-discrimination. Method/Approach. An interdisciplinary approach is employed to analyze obesity from its multifactorial manifestation so that the sciences that converge there establish action frameworks to design public policies for its prevention or mitigation. Results/Findings. Faced with the complex multifactorial nature of obesity, we identified how a wide range of factors appear alongside the right to non-discrimination that, when approached separatedly, result in disjointed actions. Discussion/Conclusions/Contributions. It contributes to the discussion on how we could advance the right to health regarding obesity and, above all, how to promote an interdisciplinary discussion on the moral, legal, and regulatory responsibility derived from the obesity problem.
