Palatability of extruded dog diets supplemented with Ascophyllum nodosum L. (Fucaceae, Phaeophyceae)
Although Ascophyllum nodosum, a brown seaweed (Phaeophyceae) of the family Fucaceae, is widely used in companion animal products, few studies have attempted to evaluate its influence on foodstuff palatability. This study investigated the effect of A. nodosum on extruded dog food palatability using the split-plate test. Eleven naїve dogs were used. Ascophyllum nodosum (AN) palatability was evaluated across separate tests for three pairwise comparisons between a control extruded food (CTR) and two experimental foods, obtained by adding A. nodosum at low (0.3%, AN-low) or high (1.0%, AN-high) concentrations to the CTR food. Food intake within the first 5 min and first choice eating behaviour was recorded. Differences in food consumption were only registered where the CTR and the AN-high foods were compared (21.11 vs. 7.62 g kg−1 BW0.75; P < 0.001). The intake ratio, calculated as consumed food (A/A + B), confirmed this trend (0.75 vs. 0.28; P < 0.001). No differences were found in first choice behaviour in any palatability test. The results suggest that A. nodosum shows an inhibiting and dose-dependent effect on the dogs dry matter intake. Data obtained from the first choice behaviour evaluation also indicate that negative effects exerted by A. nodosum on palatability are primarily related to gustatory factors rather than to olfactory stimuli

In the therapy of congestive heart failure in dogs inhibitors of the angiotensin converting enzyme was used for variable time from 1 to 17 months due to their ability of inducing haemodynamic improvement demonstrable on a direct and instrumental clinical level. However in 5 of the 16 subjects treated with Enalapril (Enapren "R") or Lisinopril (Zestril "R") at the dose between 0,2 and 0,5 mg/kg/die, at varying time intervals from the beginning of the therapy the appearance in of the following in different combinations were observed: renal failure, cutaneus rashes, scratching and skin ulcers, chronic dry irritative cough, as well as polydipsia. These disorders were interpreted as collateral effects linked with the type of molecule administred since they regressed when the administration of the drug was interrupted or when it was substituted with another ACE-inhibitor. On the basis of these observations, even if they refer to an exiguous sample of subjects, it can be hypothesized that the effects described are more frequent than that is referred by literature and they can constitute a limitation for chronic therapy with ACE-inhibitors
MODIFICAZIONI DI CLORURI, LATTOSIO, ALFA-1-ANTITRIPSINA E NAG-asi NEL SECRETO MAMMARIO DI PECORE SOTTOPOSTE A MUNGITURA MECCANICA.
Chloride, lactose, A-1-AT and NAG-ase evaluation in milk samples of healty sheep and of sheep affected by mastitis has shown that differences exist between the two status. These parameters can be utilised in diagnosis of subclinical udder affection
A peculiar deflection between the QRS complex and the ST segment, identified as the Osborn wave (Ow), has been found on the elec¬trocardiogram of 8 hypothermic dogs affected by a frigore hypothermia. This peculiar electrocardiographic sign has been noticed in the 25.8% of the hypo¬thermic subjects observed during a year. The metabolic changes identified by laboratory exams, and the histopathologic findings in the autoptical examined dogs, suggest that the Ow is probably due to a slow depolarization of a hypo¬thermic myocardial area

The role of diet in managing inflamatory bowel disease affected dogs: a retrospective cohort study on 76 cases
The term inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) refers to a group of idiopathic, chronic intestinal diseases characterized by a diffuse infiltration of inflammatory cells into the lamina propria of the intestine. The pathogenesis of IBD is unknown. The most common signs described are diarrhoea, vomit, and progressive weight loss. In order to make a definitive diagnosis, though, the presence of inflammatory cells infiltration must be evident on histopathologic analysis. The therapeutic approach has 2 main goals: decrease the inflammatory response and remove possible antigenic sources, such as food components or intestinal microflora. Therefore, the most common therapy is the association of Prednisone with a single protein diet, especially when the inflammatory cells infiltration is severe. Another way to reduce the antigenic stimulation is to control the intestinal microflora, so antibiotics and pre/ probiotics may be used. This retrospective study tested and compared the therapeutic value of Prednisone and specific diets, used as a single therapy or combined together. The results show a significative clinical improvement in dogs fed with hydrolized protein diets rather than novel protein diets. Finally, fish is the more reliable source of protein to use during therapy, because of its low ability to trigger an antigenic reaction
