It aims not only to analyse the demytologisation programme but primarily to outline to what extent and how existential interpretation influenced his thinking, e.g. in eschatological study, the issue of historical Jesus, in sermons and in the relationship between man and God. The thesis covers the main ambiguities of Bultmann's system, principal critical reactions not only in Germany but also in the Czech Republic. His existential interpretation was a brave and totally adequate act in its time based on which the theology is topical even today

Although the name Rudolf Bultmann is well known in South African ecclesiastical circles, many South Africans distrust his theology because of prejudice and the suspicion that it is not faithful to scripture. A synopsis of Bultmann’s own theological description of faith is presented here with the focus on its historical evelopment and with the aim in mind to serve as an apology for a better understanding of his point of view within the context of his life as a confessing Lutheran. The essay ends with a concise critical evaluation of Bultmann’s understanding of Christian faith pointing out its continual value for the current theological debate on the meaning of faith, as well as some minor conditional reservations on his arguments

to present Bultmann’s view on theology. The theme is relevant, since there is confusion as to
what theology is or should be. Although his theological contribution remains under attack,
Bultmann often complained of being misunderstood. Therefore it is necessary to read his work
carefully and to reconsider his approach. The author started with themes Bultmann discussed
in his lectures on theological encyclopaedia, published posthumously, and elaborates on them

Rudolf Bultmann (1884-1976) ist in erster Linie als Neutestamentler bekannt. Seine Bibelhermeneutik hat auch für die systematische Theologie eine Bedeutung, doch ist Bultmann auch als Religionshistoriker tätig gewesen. Als Neutestamentler hat sich Bultmann vorwiegend für die Reli gionsgeschichte der römischen Kaiserzeit (griechisch-römischen Religion, Mysterienkulte, antikes Judentum, Gnosis) interessiert. Seine religionsgeschichtliche Betrachtungweise hängt stark von den Ansichten der Religionsgeschichtlichen Schule ab, aber er war nicht der Epigone dieser Schule, sondern hat auch der Religionsgeschichte des Römischen Reiches seinen eigenen originellen Beitrag gewidmet. Die Bedeutung Bultmanns für die Religionsgeschichte kann man kurz in folgenden vier Thesen zusammenfassen:
1) Bultmann war zwar nicht der erste, der anfing, das Urchristentum anhand des Vergleichsmaterials aus dessen religöser Umgebung zu forschen, doch hat kein früherer Forscher das so systematisch und gründlich vorgenommen wie Bultmann.
2) Er gehört zu den ersten Gelehrten, die aus dem Neuen Testament gnostische Motive feststellten. Obwohl sich die Interpretation dieser Motive im Laufe der Zeit verändern hat, ist die Frage nach den Beziehungen zwischen Urchristentum und Gnosis noch heute für die Forschung wichtig geblieben. Bultmann gehört zu den ersten Forschern, die diese Frage systematisch und mit allen Konsequenzen gestellt haben.
3) Bultmanns Anschauung von der Religion der Antike als ein bestimmtes „Daseinsverständnis“ hat eine Bedeutung für Hermeneutik und Interpretation der antiken Religionen noch heute.
4) Bultmann hat seine eigene Schule gegründet, deren Einfluss sowohl auf die neutestamentliche Forschung als auch auf die Religionsgeschichte des Imperium Romanum lange Zeit wichtig gewesen ist und teilweise noch heute fortbesteht
