    Tar sandstone investigation in southwestern Uinta Basin

    reportDuring the month of July 1972, the author assisted by Jonathan Mann studied the oil impregnated sandstone (hereafter OISS) deposits in the Lower Unit of the Parachute Creek Member of the Green River Formation on the southwestern edge of the Uinta Basin, along the Roan Cliffs and within the Roan Plateau. Careful mapping was conducted to determine the extent of the Sunnyside OISS deposit and to relate it to other deposits in the general vicinity. In addition to this mapping, which was restricted to the Flat Canyon and Sunnyside 15 min. quadrangles, (correlation investigations? ) were carried out in Nine Mile Canyon, Argyle Canyon, Indian Canyon, and at the headwaters of Avintaquin Canyon near Reservation Ridge (see USGS 7 1/2 min. quadrangles Gray Head Peak, 1969, and Flat Ridge, Utah, 1969). These areas, in this report, are further subdivided into smaller regions (often ridges or canyons) for further expansion of the results of the investigation. A number of the canyons could only be studied by hiking them through, others because of the size of the area studied and time requirements were studied by numerous stops from a four-wheel-drive truck. A field method to categorize the estimated richness of the OISS was used in the mapping: A numeral from I-V was assigned to a deposit, I being void of tar and progressing with each number until very rich OISS would be classed as V

    Whole exome sequencing implicates eye development, the unfolded protein response and plasma membrane homeostasis in primary open-angle glaucoma

    Purpose: To identify biological processes associated with POAG and its subtypes, high-tension (HTG) and normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), by analyzing rare potentially damaging genetic variants. Methods: A total of 122 and 65 unrelated HTG and NTG participants, respectively, with early onset advanced POAG, 103 non-glaucoma controls and 993 unscreened ethnicity-matched controls were included in this study. Study participants without myocilin disease-causing variants and non-glaucoma controls were subjected to whole exome sequencing on an Illumina HiSeq2000. Exomes of participants were sequenced on an Illumina HiSeq2000. Qualifying variants were rare in the general population (MAF < 0.001) and potentially functionally damaging (nonsense, frameshift, splice or predicted pathogenic using SIFT or Polyphen2 software). Genes showing enrichment of qualifying variants in cases were selected for pathway and network analysis using InnateDB. Results: POAG cases showed enrichment of rare variants in camera-type eye development genes (p = 1.40×10–7, corrected p = 3.28×10–4). Implicated eye development genes were related to neuronal or retinal development. HTG cases were significantly enriched for key regulators in the unfolded protein response (UPR) (p = 7.72×10–5, corrected p = 0.013). The UPR is known to be involved in myocilin-related glaucoma; our results suggest the UPR has a role in non-myocilin causes of HTG. NTG cases showed enrichment in ion channel transport processes (p = 1.05×10–4, corrected p = 0.027) including calcium, chloride and phospholipid transporters involved in plasma membrane homeostasis. Network analysis also revealed enrichment of the MHC Class I antigen presentation pathway in HTG, and the EGFR1 and cell-cycle pathways in both HTG and NTG. Conclusion: This study suggests that mutations in eye development genes are enriched in POAG. HTG can result from aberrant responses to protein misfolding which may be amenable to molecular chaperone therapy. Davis is Professor of Economics, Marquette University, and Professor of Economics, University of Amsterdam, is author of Keynes’s Philosophical Development (Cambridge, 1994), The Theory of the Individual in Economics (Routledge, 2003), Individuals and Identity in Economics (Cambridge, 2011), and co-author with Marcel Boumans of Economic Methodology: Understanding Economics as a Science (Palgrave, 2010). He has been a visiting professor at the Sorbonne, Cambridge University, Erasmus University, and Duke University. He is a former editor of the Review of Social Economy, and is currently co-editor of the Journal of Economic Methodology and the Routledge book series Advances in Social Economics. He is a past president or chair of the History of Economics Society, the International Network for Economic Method, the Association for Social Economics, and past vice-president of the European Society for the History of Economic Thought.     Determination of critical cooling rates in metallic glass forming alloy libraries through laser spike annealing

    The glass forming ability (GFA) of metallic glasses (MGs) is quantified by the critical cooling rate (RC). Despite its key role in MG research, experimental challenges have limited measured RC to a minute fraction of known glass formers. We present a combinatorial approach to directly measure RC for large compositional ranges. This is realized through the use of compositionally-graded alloy libraries, which were photo-thermally heated by scanning laser spike annealing of an absorbing layer, then melted and cooled at various rates. Coupled with X-ray diffraction mapping, GFA is determined from direct RC measurements. We exemplify this technique for the Au-Cu-Si system, where we identify Au56Cu27Si17 as the alloy with the highest GFA. In general, this method enables measurements of RC over large compositional areas, which is powerful for materials discovery and, when correlating with chemistry and other properties, for a deeper understanding of MG formation.Peer reviewe

    Paranoia and irony in the Anglophone dectective narrative and the novels of Umberto Eco

    The thesis provides a reading of Umberto Eco's three novels, The Name of the Rose, Foucault's Pendulum, and The Island of the Day Before, that, while it acknowledges the importance of the Italian literary tradition in which they stand, also seeks to explain why their author appeals so frequently to literary models outside Italy, and in particular the Anglo-American detective genre. Chapter One explains Eco's relationship to the development of Italian literature through his lifetime. It is noted that Eco is beginning, both in his semiotics and his fiction, from a position where post-structuralism has been extensively explored by neo-avant-gardew riters. Eco positions himself alongsides uchw riters as Italo Calvino and Jorge Luis Borges, who wish to explore the ludic possibilities of working within structures, while all the time acknowledging the epistemological limitations of so doing. Eco's chosen structure, more often than not, is the highly defined genre of the detective story. From here, the following chapters engage in close readings of the three novels, with particular emphasis on The Name of the Rose and Foucault's Pendulum, demonstrating that they explore problems of interpretation central to the detective narrative. In doing this, they display an intimate knowledge of generic developments within the detective tradition, and of the philosophical and aesthetic uses made of the genre by other writers. The embedding of intertextual references to other detective narratives within Eco's novels is an important factor, as they come together to form a narrative of epistemological inquiry that itself follows Eco's philosophical progress through the years. In short, the novels, inter alia, map a systematic inquiry into the possibility of systematic inquiry. They reserve the space to engage in such an ironic and self-referential project precisely through their fictionality

    iDCC - Hardware, Software and Marketing of a Usable Digital Command Controller

    Supplementary material included on disc with print copy.iDCC is the new implement of Digital Command Control (DCC) with a better user interface and a much better user experience compared to the existing DCC controllers on the market. The iDCC project was carried out firstly at 2009 and the proof-of-concept prototype was available at the beginning of this project. The goal of this project is to prepare this prototype for a commercialization through the real-world industry arrangement. This is also a new framework of a Master degree project. The author of this thesis has acted as a project manager and a hardware engineer to work with a 4-member software team and a 2-member marketing team whom all are the students of the University of Waikato. As hardware engineers, the duties were to test the previous prototype and develop a brand new hardware which has more functionality and stability. With the unique scanning technology developed in this project it eliminates the complexity of the model train operation and simplifies the technical format of DCC controllers. The enclosure case also has been designed by the author to meet the market need. The software team developed and tested the firmware to fulfill the concept of iDCC with the author. The market team prepared logos, product names, and advertising materials to achieve the market promotion requirement. The author also acts as the project manager to lead the teams together to achieve the goal. The final product is ready to be released to the market as an entry level DCC controller, and the result of this project also shows that this type of framework is sustainable so that it can be applied in any Master or even Phd level project
