Phase mixing of a three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic pulse

    No full text
Phase mixing of a three dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) pulse is studied in the compressive, three-dimensional (without an ignorable coordinate) regime. It is shown that the efficiency of decay of an Alfvénic part of a compressible MHD pulse is related linearly to the degree of localization of the pulse in the homogeneous transverse direction. In the developed stage of phase mixing (for large times), coupling to its compressive part does not alter the power-law decay of an Alfvénic part of a compressible MHD pulse. The same applies to the dependence upon the resistivity of the Alfvénic part of the pulse. All this implies that the dynamics of Alfvén waves can still be qualitatively understood in terms of the previous 2.5D models. Thus, the phase mixing remains a relevant paradigm for the coronal heating applications in the realistic 3D geometry and compressive plasma

The perceptual response to exercise of progressively increasing intensity in children aged 7-8 years: validation of a pictorial curvilinear ratings of perceived exertion scale

    No full text
This study assessed the validity of the Eston-Parfitt (E-P) curvilinear Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE) Scale and a novel marble quantity task to provide estimates of perceived exertion during cycle ergometry. Fifteen children aged 7-8 years performed a discontinuous incremental graded-exercise test, and reported exertional ratings at the end of each minute. Significant increases in physiological and perceptual data were observed with increasing work rate. The relationship between work rate and marbles was curvilinear (mean R(2)=.94), supporting the theoretical justification for the E-P Scale. Strong linear (R(2)=.93) and curvilinear (R(2)=.94) relationships between RPE from the E-P Scale and work rate confirmed the robustness of the E-P Scale. Valid exertional ratings may be obtained using the E-P Scale with young children. The novel marble quantity task offers an alternative method of deriving perceived exertion responses in children

Interpersonal difficulties in obesity: A systematic review and meta-analysis to inform a rejection sensitivity-based model

    No full text
Obesity is associated with difficulties due to stigma and loneliness. These impact negatively on individuals’ quality of life and behaviour change efforts. Increased sensitivity to others’ negative feedback might play a role in the maintenance of these difficulties and could be addressed in psychological interventions. We conducted a systematic review of interpersonal difficulties in individuals with obesity, across the lifespan. We investigated early interpersonal adversity (i.e. frequency of teasing/bullying), perceived interpersonal stress and quality of social life, based on a rejection sensitivity model. The databases PubMed, Web of Knowledge and AGRIS, Embase, Medline and PsychINFO were searched for published peer-reviewed journal articles (1980-June 2018). Thirty-two studies met inclusion criteria. Results from the meta-analyses (n = 16 studies) indicated that overweight/obese individuals reported more frequent experiences of teasing/bullying, greater interpersonal stress and poorer quality of social life than healthy weight individuals. Findings in the systematic review aligned to this evidence. Psychological interventions targeting increased sensitivity to negative interpersonal feedback could improve interpersonal functioning and, in turn, eating behaviours in individuals with obesity
