Leveraging First-Gen Assets: Tips and tricks for reaching first-gens in the digital space

    No full text
TikToks, Fleets, Memes, Emojis, Hashtags – Connecting with our Gen Z first-gens means speaking their language. Research shows that while first-generation college students struggle to gain footing with their continuing-generation peers in the analog world, the two groups maintain an equitable amount of social capital in online settings (Rowan-Kenyon, 2018). This makes it more important than ever to leverage technology to reach first-gen students. Higher education support roles that were once strictly analog are becoming more and more immersed in the digital world. Join Amanda Coltri, associate director of enrollment systems and onboarding operations at Rowan University, as she exposes secret tips and tricks on how to keep up with the lingo, integrate technology into your everyday work, and expand your impact in the digital space. This short but informative session will cover digital communication strategies that can help you take your digital game from #weaksauce to #savage

The correlation of compulsive buying and binge eating behaviors in female undergraduate college students

The purpose of this study was to extend previous research by Faber et al. (1995) in which comorbidity (two or more disorders existing at the same time) was found between Binge Eating Disorder and compulsive buying behaviors in a clinical sample. Faber et al. explored whether a subset of impulse control disorders could be called compulsive consumption disorders. Participants in this study, 51 undergraduate, female students, aged 18-23, were obtained from the Introduction to Psychology subject pool at Rowan University. The subjects completed the Binge Eating Scale and Compulsive Buying Scale and a correlation was completed. The result was that a significant negative correlation was found between scores on the Binge Eating Scale and scores on the Compulsive Buying Scale. A higher score on the Binge Eating Scale indicated greater severity, whereas a lower score on the Compulsive Buying Scale indicated greater severity. The behaviors were not only likely to occur together, but also with the same level of severity. This finding further supports the possible link between compulsive consumption disorders. If such a subset exists, it may help to determine possible cause and treatment

Pluvial flooding and flood rescues in Rowan County, NC : an analysis of 9-1-1 call data for years 2011 - 2021

Flooding is the most widespread and costly natural disaster worldwide. The effects of climate change and development are expected to significantly increase losses of life and property due to flooding over the next century. While coastal and riverine flooding are well understood and their attendant flood risk zones mapped, flash flooding events in urban areas are not as well understood or mapped. In the years 2018 and 2020, Rowan County Emergency Services responded to record numbers of flood rescue calls due to pluvial flooding. This paper examines 9-1-1 call data in Rowan County from 2011 through 2021. Patterns in call frequency, spatial distribution, meteorological conditions, and changes in land use patterns were analyzed to better understand the evolving nature of flood rescue calls in Rowan County in hopes of building community resilience and sustainability. A combination of record rainfall events and clearing of land for development were found to have contributed to the increase in call volume for flood rescues. The spatial distribution of calls was found to be much more dispersed in the later portion of the study period than observed in the earlier portion of the study. Additionally, the length of time from the when the first call was received to when the last call came in was longer in the later portions of the study. Greater rainfall increased impervious surface, and decreased evapotranspiration capacity may have contributed to flooding events that stretched over two and three days in the later portions of the study period

The Benefits of Being Economics Professor A (and not Z)

Alphabetic name ordering on multi-authored academic papers, which is the convention in the economics discipline and various other disciplines, is to the advantage of people whose last name initials are placed early in the alphabet. As it turns out, Professor A, who has been a first author more often than Professor Z, will have published more articles and experienced afaster growth rate over the course of her career as a result of reputation and visibility. Moreover, authors know that name ordering matters and indeed take ordering seriously: Several characteristics of an author group composition determine the decision to deviate from the default alphabetic name order to a significant extent.performance measurement, incentives, economists, name ordering

In this article, William Z. Shetter compares and contrasts the dialects that developed between different Dutch colonies in the New World. He explores in-depth the nuances of Jersey Dutch, and provides theories to explain how Dutch and colonial languages blended. Investigation of single, binary, and ternary metal oxides of iridium, rhodium, and palladium for neural interfacing applications

In this dissertation, thin film single, binary, and ternary metal oxides of iridium (Ir), ruthenium (Ru), rhodium (Rh), and palladium (Pd) were synthesized for use as electrode/microelectrode coatings for neural interfacing applications using DC reactive magnetron sputtering. Synthesis conditions which enhanced the electrochemical properties of films as measured by cyclic voltammetry and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a phosphate buffered saline solution of the single metal oxides were identified to be 30 mTorr working pressure, 20% oxygen partial pressure, and cathode power densities ≤ 4.9 W/cm2. These parameters were then used to develop the binary and ternary metal oxide films. The binary metal oxides studied included Ir(1-x)Mx where M = Pd, Rh, Ru, and the ternary metal oxides studied included Ir(1-x-z)MxMz’, where M,M´ = Pd, Rh, and Ru. The binary metal oxide concentrations which produce robust microstructures and exceptional electrochemical performance have been identified to be x ≥ 0.5 for Ir(1-x)RhxOy, x ≥ 0.34 for Ir(1-x)RuxOy, and x ≥ 0.14 for Ir(1-x)PdxOy. Similar compositional ranges have been identified for the ternary metal oxides and include x ≥ 0.16 and z ≥ 0.05 for Ir(1-x-z)PdxRuzOy, x ≥ 0.13 and z ≥ 0.04 for Ir(1-x-z)PdxRhzOy, and x ≥ 0.2 and z ≥ 0.14 for Ir(1-x-z)RuxRhzOy
