    This study is about British working-class fiction in the post-war period. It covers various authors such as Robert Tressell, George Orwell, Walter Greenwood, Lewis Grassic Gibbon and DH Lawrence from the early twentieth century; writers traditionally classified as 'Angry Young Men' like John Osborne, Arnold Wesker, Shelagh Delaney, John Wain and Kingsley Amis; and working-class novelists like John Braine, Stan Barstow, David Storey, Alan Sillitoe and Barry Hines from the 1950s and 1960s. Some of the main issues dealt with in the course of this study are language, form, community, self/identity/autobiography, sexuality and relationship with bourgeois art. The major argument centres on two questions: representation of working-class life, and the relationship between working-class literary tradition and dominant ideologies. We will be arguing that while working-class fiction succeeded in challenging and rupturing bourgeois literary tradition, on the level of language and linguistic medium of expression for example, it utterly failed to break away from dominant, bourgeois modes of literary production in relation to form, for instance. Our argument is situated within Marxist approaches to literature, a political and aesthetic position from which we attempt an analysis and an evaluation of this working-class literary tradition. These critical approaches provide us also with the theoretical tool to define the political perspective of this tradition, and to judge whether it was confined to a descriptive mode of representation or located in a radical, political outlook

    Eclectic British author Alan Moore (b. 1953) is one of the most acclaimed and controversial comics writers to emerge since the late 1970s. He has produced a large number of well-regarded comic books and graphic novels while also making occasional forays into music, poetry, performance, and prose. In Alan Moore: Comics as Performance, Fiction as Scalpel , Annalisa Di Liddo argues that Moore employs the comics form to dissect the literary canon, the tradition of comics, contemporary society, and our understanding of history. The book considers Moore's narrative strategies and pinpoints the main thematic threads in his works: the subversion of genre and pulp fiction, the interrogation of superhero tropes, the manipulation of space and time, the uses of magic and mythology, the instability of gender and ethnic identity, and the accumulation of imagery to create satire that comments on politics and art history.     The death of William Golding: authorship and creativity in darkness visible and the paper men

    In the seventies and eighties William Golding was deeply responsive to the critical, anti-authorial ethos that followed the publication of Roland Barthes's "La mort de I'auteur" (1968). In Darkness Visible (1979) and The Paper Men (1984) he investigates means by which to reaffirm authorial presence. Working through paradox, he performs the authorial death in these novels, and establishes language’s inadequacy as a means of conveying absolute meaning, authorial "vision," truth or revelation. Having done so he nonetheless gestures towards the divine, towards the possibility of a vatic communication. In this manner the novels work upon principles of contradiction and collapse. What remains is a discourse of hope, promise, desire, without means of substantiating such optimism. Thus Golding might be said to have practiced a form of negative theology, and to have anticipated in this respect some recent trends in literary theory

    Selectivity for dimers in pentene oligomerization over acid zeolites

    The reactions of 1-pentene over acid zeolites were investigated in the liquid phase at 473 K. The primary reactions were isomerization, dimerization, and subsequent cracking of dimers. Zeolites consisting of only 10-membered (MFI) or 12-membered rings (FAU, BEA) behaved similarly, with dimerization and subsequent cracking products observed. Zeolites possessing 8-membered ring pores (MOR, FER) showed very different selectivity from each other and from other zeolites. MOR showed almost complete conversion of C10 olefins, such that hexene and butene from cracking were the dominant products. FER showed high activity and selectivity for dimerization, with very small amounts of cracking products observed.Peer reviewe

    Morphometric analysis of UK lake systems as a compliance tool for the European Water Framework Directive

    The European Water Framework Directive 2000 (WFD) stipulates that surface water bodies, such as lakes, should achieve good ecological and chemical status (pollutant levels) by 2015. However, the extant environmental monitoring programmes of most member states have major deficiencies in terms of the baseline data required, thus potentially jeopardising the compliance schedules of the WFD. Great Britain has over 40 000 lakes >1 ha, but bathymetric data are available for less than 2%. This paper presents a collation of available bathymetric data (622 sites) and demonstrates the utility of morphometric analysis to bridge the gap between surveyed and un-surveyed systems. Type-specific relations between mean (Dmv) and maximum (Dmax) water depths were developed for natural lakes (r2 values ranging from 0.87 to 0.99), as well as modified systems and impoundments (r2 values ranging from 0.74 to 0.99). Stepwise regression was also undertaken to predict Dmv and Dmax using only map-derived information (such as lake area, catchment area and shoreline length). The results varied markedly between “geological types”, with “medium alkalinity” (MA) lakes giving the highest coefficients of determination (R2 of 0.79 and 0.82, respectively). Predicting Dmv is important because it permits calculation of parameters such as the volume (V) (and hence residence time) and dynamic ratio (DR) which provides a measure of the likely extent of sediment re-suspension. This preliminary analysis has demonstrated the potential of the morphometric approach to generate valuable parameters from limited field investment and will provide a valuable stop-gap until the results of the WFD’s comprehensive monitoring programmes are realized
