    Luisa Igloria (previously published as Maria Luisa A. Carino) is the author of six books, four of which received the National Book Award from the Manila Critics’ Circle: Blood Sacrifice (University of the Philippines Press, 1998); Encanto (Anvil, 1994); Cartography (Anvil, 1992); and Cordillera Tales (New Day, 1990). She is also the author of In the Garden of the Three Islands (Moyer Bell/Asphodel, 1995), and the editor of Not Home, But Here: Writing from the Filipino Diaspora (Anvil, 2003). Her seventh and most recent book is Trill & Mordent (WordTech Editions, 2005), a runner-up for the 2004 Editions Prize. Igloria’s work has appeared in numerous national and international journals; she has received prestigious honors that include the 2004 Fugue Poetry Award, Finalist for the 2004 Larry Levis Editors Prize for Poetry, and Finalist for the 2003 Dorset Prize (Tupelo Press). She has received fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation, the Hawthornden Castle in Scotland, and to the Summer Literary Seminars in St. Petersburg, Russia. With Aileen Cassinetto and Jeremy S. Hoffman, she co-edited Dear Human at the Edge of Time: Poems on Climate Change in the U.S. (Paloma Press, 2023), offered as a companion to the Fifth National Climate Assessment (NCA5). Originally from Baguio City, she makes her home in Norfolk VA where she is the Louis I. Jaffe and University Professor of English and Creative Writing at Old Dominion University’s MFA Creative Writing Program. She also leads workshops for and is a member of the board of The Muse Writers Center in Norfolk. Luisa is the 20th Poet Laureate of the Commonwealth of Virginia (2020-22), Emerita.     Strengthening Masonry Arches with Lime-Based Mortar Composite

    In recent decades, many strengthening interventions on masonry elements were performed by using fiber reinforced polymers (FRPs). These advanced materials proved to be effective to increase the load-carrying capacity of masonry elements and to improve their structural behavior, avoiding the most critical failure modes. Despite the advantages of this technique compared to more traditional methods, FRP systems have disadvantages related to their low resistance to high temperatures, impossibility of application on wet surfaces, low permeability, and poor compatibility with masonry supports. Therefore, composite materials made of a fiber textile embedded in an inorganic matrix were recently proposed as alternatives to FRPs for strengthening historic masonry constructions. These composite materials are easier to install, have higher resistance to high temperatures, and permit higher vapor permeability than FRPs. The inorganic matrix is frequently a cement-based mortar, and the composite materials made of a fiber textile embedded in a cement-based mortar are usually identified as FRCM (fabric reinforced cementitious matrix) composites. More recently, the use of natural lime mortar as an inorganic matrix has been proposed as an alternative to cement-based mortars when historic compatibility with the substrate is strictly required, as in case of restoration of historic buildings. In this paper, the effectiveness of a fabric made of basalt fibers embedded in lime mortar matrix (Basalt-FRLM) for the strengthening of masonry arches is investigated. An experimental investigation was performed on 1:2 scaled brick masonry arches strengthened at the extrados with a layer of Basalt-FRLM and tested under vertical load. The results obtained are compared with previous results obtained by the authors by testing masonry arches strengthened at their extrados with FRCM and FRP composites. This investigation highlights the effectiveness of Basalt-FRLM in increasing load-currying and the displacement capacities of masonry arches. The Basalt-FRLM-strengthened arch exhibited higher displacement capacity when compared to arches strengthened with polymeric and cementitious matrix composites

    Earthen vernacular architecture in Cuneo’s territories (Piedmont, Italy)

    Piedmont is characterized by the presence of numerous earthen buildings mainly in the province of Alessandria. However, studies conducted over the last decade have shown the presence of interesting earthen constructions also in the provinces of Asti, Torino, Biella and Cuneo. They are generally two-storied rural buildings, built with both fired bricks (for the structures) and earthen bricks (for internal and external walls). They are evidence of the close relationship between man and his territory. They do represent the interesting evidence of know-hows and old-aged construction techniques. They are “fragile” architectures, little or not known, which may be irretrievably lost if not properly safeguarded. This paper intends to illustrate the results of researches aimed at deepening the knowledge of the earthen buildings located in the province of Cuneo, examining types, construction techniques and analysing the characteristics and performance of the constitutive materials through in situ tests (rebound test, peeling test, capillary absorption), characterization of the earth (XRD, particle size distribution, Atterberg limits) and identification of possible additives. This information will be useful not only to preserve the earthen heritage but also to promote the use of these construction techniques, evidence of skills and people's abilities to take advantage of the local environmental resources
