    No full text
This paper focuses on the Latin verse funerary inscription of 12-years-old Constantina, found in Hippo Regius and dating from the 6th-7th AD. The metrical structure and the language of the epitaph are investigated, as presumably resulting from the collaboration of a literate ‘author’ with an illiterate scribe. Furthermore, the meaning of the Vergilian echoes featuring in the text is reexamined

Showing the Unsayable: Participatory Visual Approaches and the Constitution of ‘Patient Experience’ in Healthcare Quality Improvement

    No full text
This article considers the strengths and potential contributions of participatory visual methods for healthcare quality improvement research. It argues that such approaches may enable us to expand our understanding of ‘patient experience’ and of its potential for generating new knowledge for health systems. In particular, they may open up dimensions of people’s engagement with services and treatments which exceed both the declarative nature of responses to questionnaires and the narrative sequencing of self reports gathered through qualitative interviewing. I will suggest that working with such methods may necessitate a more reflexive approach to the constitution of evidence in quality improvement work. To this end, the article will first consider the emerging rationale for the use of visual participatory methods in improvement before outlining the implications of two related approaches—photo-elicitation and PhotoVoice—for the constitution of ‘experience’. It will then move to a participatory model for healthcare improvement work, Experience Based Co-Design (EBCD). It will argue that EBCD exemplifies both the strengths and the limitations of adequating visual participatory approaches to quality improvement ends. The article will conclude with a critical reflection on a small photographic study, in which the author participated, and which sought to harness service user perspectives for the design of psychiatric facilities, as a way of considering the potential contribution of visual participatory methods for quality improvement

Online Dispute Resolution in E-Commerce: Is Consensus in Regulation UNCITRAL’s Utopian Idea or a Realistic Ambition?

    No full text
The rigorous deliberations of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law to create a global regulatory framework for Online Dispute Resolution have failed to generate a consensus. This paper analyses whether UNCITRAL’s ambition to develop an inclusive ODR regulatory platform has considered the complexities of cutting across cultural boundaries and power (im)balances. The objective here is to challenge UNCITRAL’s assumption that technology’s a-territorial nature facilitates homogeneity in ODR. To this end, the paper examines the implications of globalisation and the evolution of diverse cultures on ODR and proposes that an alternative approach is needed to combine cosmopolitan and legal pluralism in developing a platform trusted by all disputing parties. The author argues that the focus of contemporary research should extend to consider commonalities across and between national, regional and global levels of governance when regulating for ODR. The paper’s findings will inform policy makers and regulators, including UNCITRAL, when considering the role and interaction of various stakeholders when developing an ODR framework. The significance of this article lies in bringing out that the creation of a regulatory ODR framework needs to be more finely nuanced due to its nature as a normative and legal hybrid

This book engages young scholars, teachers and students in a critical dialogue with past and present directions in cultural-historical studies. More particularly, it prepares prospective anthropologists, as well as readers interested in human cultures for understanding basic theoretical and methodological ethnographic principles and pursuing further what has been known as cultural anthropological perspectives. The book discusses key, field-based studies in the discipline and places them in dialogue with related studies in social history, linguistics, philosophy, literature, and photography, am.Introduction; Part I: Exploring Cultures; Chapter One; Part II: Writing the Other; Chapter Two; Chapter Three; Chapter Four; Chapter Five; Part III: Reading the Other or On Visual Communication; Chapter Six; Chapter Seven; Chapter Eight; Chapter Nine; Part IV: Institution versus Meaning; Chapter Ten; Part V: Economy and Exchange; Chapter Eleven; Part VI: Signs, Communication, and Performance; Chapter Twelve; Chapter Thirteen; Chapter Fourteen; Part VII: Cognitive Systems; Chapter Fifteen; Chapter Sixteen; Part VIII: Symbolic Systems; Chapter Seventeen; Chapter EighteenPart IX: Ritual PassageChapter Nineteen; Chapter Twenty; Intersection; Part X: Gender and the Cultural Construction of Difference; Chapter Twenty One; Chapter Twenty Two; Chapter Twenty Three; Part XI: Emotions and the Senses; Chapter Twenty Four; Chapter Twenty Five; Author Index1 online resource

The Kleczyńskis – a gloss to their biography referring to entries in the PWM Encyclopaedia of Music

    No full text
Dzięki kwerendom w archiwach wiedeńskich ustaliła m.in. precyzyjne datowanie dotyczące jego przynależności do obu orkiestr, a w odnalezionych listach do Constantina Wurzbach, autora słownika biograficznego imperium austriackiego, znalazła zapisy mówiące, że przed wyjazdem do Włoch i Austrii muzyk pobierał nauki w Krakowie. The author of this report (who also penned the entry on Jan Baptysta Kleczyński in the PWM encyclopaedia of music) presents several previously unknown facts from the life of this composer and musician of the Viennese ensembles of the Breuners and the Brauns. Thanks to preliminary research conducted in archives in Vienna, she has established the precise dates f his membership of both orchestras, and in rediscovered letters to Constantin Wurzbach, author of a biographical dictionary of the Austrian Empire, she found evidence that the musician had studied in Cracow before departing for Italy and Austria. The author has also found information concerning Kleczyński’s nephews: Józef, a doctor and music lover, and Franciszek, a painter

Th. N. Synadinos and his presence in modern greek theatre

    No full text
This dissertation examines the contribution of Th. N. Synadinos (1878?-1959). It seeks to record, describe, assess and place in their historical context both his literary production as well as his manifold occupation with the theatrical stage. Much of the research has been based on Synadinos’s archive kept at the Hellenic Literary and Historical Archive of the Cultural Foundation of the National Bank of Greece (ELIA/MIET). Given the fragmentary nature of archives, further research was carried out in private archives and in those of associations and organisations related to Synadinos, as well as in theatrical, cinematographic and music collections, in newspapers and magazines and the existing bibliography. The seven chapters of the dissertation follow the corresponding periods of Synadinos's trajectory in theatre. His plays are examined in the chronological order of their first staging. This approach seemed the most appropriate one because of Synadinos’s firm belief that a play is only evaluated and assessed on the stage. Furthermore, his writings are closely connected to their historical and artistic context and to the presence of their author himself in the events and processes taking place during each period; this presence is recorded and commented upon, along with his plays in each chapter. Synadinos’s course in the theatre is summed up in the Conclusions. This chapter recapitulates his presence and oeuvre, his wanderings and confrontation with writing various genres for the stage. His apprenticeship in the theatre, his influences, theoretical views and aesthetic preferences are also highlighted. This chapter also looks at the milestones in his administrative trajectory and assesses Synadinos’s contribution to the theatre of his time. The dissertation also includes an Appendix in four parts, a selection of photographic and pictorial resources, a full bibliography, and indexes of names and titles.Η εργασία πραγματεύεται τη συνεισφορά του Θ. Ν.
