The chemistry of group 4 and 5 metal hydrides with ancillary aryloxide ligation: Design, synthesis, and mechanistic studies

    No full text
In recent years Rothwell and coworkers have shown that mixed hydrido, aryloxide derivatives of tantalum and niobium catalyze the regio- and stereo-selective hydrogenation of arene substrates. The elucidation of this mechanism of hydrogenation is a high priority. To this end a series of deuterium labeling studies have been carried out in an attempt to demonstrate evidence for the proposed mechanism of this reaction. Further, the isolation of potential intermediate species has been undertaken to provide further evidence for the reaction mechanism. The knowledge gained in these studies has been utilized to design and synthesize a new class of aryloxide derivatives of Group 4 and 5 metals with chelating bisaryloxides ligands. The synthesis and reactivity studies of these complexes are presented
