    Meaningful work and secondary school teachers' intention to leave

    The study investigates the relations between secondary school teachers' work-role fit, job enrichment, supervisor relationships, co-worker relationships, psychological meaningfulness of work and intention to leave. A cross-sectional survey was used. The participants were 502 secondary school teachers in Namibia. The following measuring instruments were used: Work-role Fit Scale, Job Enrichment Scale, Co-worker and Supervisor Relationships Scales, Psychological Meaningfulness Scale and Turnover Intention Scale. Work-role fit and job enrichment both had direct positive effect on experiences of psychological meaningfulness at work, while poor work-role fit and low psychological meaningfulness both had a direct effect on teachers' intentions to leave. An analysis of the indirect effects showed that poor work-role fit and poor job enrichment affected intention to leave due to the concomitant experience of low psychological meaningfulness. These findings have implications for the retention of teachers in secondary schools

    Flourishing in Work and Careers

    Mental health is an important career resource that will help individuals to be function optimally, be self-sufficient, adapt to change, manage their careers well. The aim of this chapter was to investigate the relationships between work- and career-related experiences (including work role fit, job characteristics, overload, supervisor relations, co-worker relations, advancement and remuneration) and the flourishing of managers in South Africa. A cross-sectional survey design was used with managers in the agricultural sector in South Africa (N = 507). The Antecedents Scale and the Mental Health Continuum Short Form were administered. The results showed that work role fit, job characteristics, co-worker relations and remuneration affected flourishing positively. Overload, advancement and supervisor relations did not predict the flourishing of managers in this study. Interventions to promote career development should focus on promoting the flourishing of people and developing positive institutions.http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-00645-1_1

    Contractual relations between employers and employees in an HEI: individual and organisational outcomes

    The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between employees' experiences of contractual relations and job satisfaction, flourishing and turnover intention in a higher education institution (HEI). A cross-sectional survey design was used with 300 academic and support staff members. The State of the Employment and Psychological Contract Scales, Violation of Psychological Contract Scale, Job Satisfaction Scale, Mental Health Continuum - Short Form and Intention to Quit Scale were administered. The results showed that psychological contract violation, job dissatisfaction and low flourishing (emotional, psychological and social well-being) directly impact turnover intention. Lack of psychological contract fulfilment indirectly and negatively impact job satisfaction and flourishing via psychological contract violation. Psychological contract violation indirectly impacts turnover intention via job dissatisfaction and low flourishing of employees in an HEI.     Job satisfaction in a chemical factory

    Subjective well-being is regarded as an important goal given the positive outcomes thereof for individuals. Job satisfaction is an important indicator of the subjective well-being of individuals. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the use of the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire (MSQ) for different language groups working in a chemical factory, and to investigate the relationship between job satisfaction and demographic variables. The study was carried out with a sample (N = 583) representing different job levels in a chemical factory. The 20-item MSQ and a biographical questionnaire were administered. The results confirmed that job satisfaction consists of two internally consistent factors, namely extrinsic and intrinsic job satisfaction. The factorial invariance of the MSQ was confirmed for African languages and an Afrikaans and English group. Language was the only demographic variable that statistically significantly predicted extrinsic job satisfaction.     Burnout and work engagement of South African blue-collar workers: the development of a new scale

    Research in South Africa on work-related well-being (specifically burnout and work engagement) has focused mainly on white-collar workers. Although blue-collar workers form a major part of the South African work force, no valid and reliable instruments exist to measure burnout and work engagement of blue-collar workers. The objectives of this study were (1) to develop a work-related well-being scale that measures burnout and work engagement of blue-collar workers; (2) to test the newly developed items using Rasch analysis; and (3) to test the factorial validity and reliability of the new scale. A cross-sectional survey design was used in a convenience sample of blue-collar workers in different industries in South Africa (N=2769). Following scale development procedures, a scale was developed to measure burnout (exhaustion and cynicism) and work engagement (vigour and dedication). Using Rasch analyses, two items were eliminated, resulting in an 18-item instrument. Five items were retained to measure exhaustion, five items to measure cynicism, four items to measure vigour and four items to measure dedication. The results of the confirmatory factor analysis showed that a twofactor model with two higher-order factors – burnout (consisting of exhaustion and cynicism) and work engagement (consisting of vigour and dedication) – fit the data best.     Characterization of Spirocerca lupi in wild and domestic canids

    Dissertation (MSc)--University of Pretoria, 2016.Spirocerca lupi is a parasitic nematode that causes spirocercosis predominantly in domestic dogs. This disease is often fatal if not detected early before malignant transformation occurs. The nematodes may also cause serious aortic lesions which may weaken arteries and cause fatal haemorrhaging. There is currently no cure for the disease. Coprophagous dung beetles serve as intermediate hosts for the parasite. Lizards and birds serve as paratenic hosts when they consume dung beetles containing infective larvae. Spirocerca lupi may pose a threat to wild carnivores due to the encroachment of humans with domestic dog pets near wildlife borders. There is very little information available regarding the spread of S. lupi among wild carnivores. In this study nematodes were collected from black backed jackals as well as several domestic dogs around the country. Corresponding haplotypes of cox1 were identified in the black backed jackals and domestic dogs. This is a clear indication of gene flow of S. lupi between these two species. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that S. lupi from South Africa may be a cryptic species. Further analysis is still required to confirm this as only a small section of the cox1 gene was used during the analysis. Further investigation with a larger section of the cox1 gene as well as other genes may be required to further classify S. lupi in South Africa as well as other countries around the world. To further investigate the role of S. lupi infection among wild carnivores a faecal DNA extraction method was designed to screen these carnivores. Many challenges were encountered since S. lupi egg shedding is irregular and faecal samples from various wild carnivores were not always of the correct consistency to be analysed. The eggs of S. lupi were also found to be very resilient and did not yield easily to disruption. Other nematodes were identified with these methods indicating that it is a potential option for other nematodes but not for S. lupi. In addition to these challenges, the methods tested were found to be time consuming and costly without reliable repeatability. Several adult S. lupi nematodes were tested for endosymbiotic bacteria. Targeting endosymbiotic bacteria with antibiotics could be an alternative treatment for nematode infection. No endosymbiotic bacteria were detected in S. lupi from South Africa with the primers tested.     The psychometrical properties of translated versions of the Maslach burnout Inventory - General Survey

    ORIENTATION: The investigation of the psychometric properties of translated versions of a burnout measure. RESEARCH PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the psychometric properties of translated versions of the Maslach Burnout Inventory - General Survey (MBI-GS) and the Cognitive Weariness Scale. MOTIVATION FOR THE STUDY: To adhere to Section 8 of the Employment Equity Act, Act No. 55 of 1998 (p. 7), which stipulates that 'Psychological testing and other similar assessments are prohibited unless the test or assessment being used (a) has been scientifically shown to be valid and reliable, (b) can be applied fairly to all employees, and (c) is not biased against any employee or group.' RESEARCH DESIGN, APPROACH AND METHOD: The current study follows the quantitative research tradition. This study was conducted with a convenience sample of members of the South African Police Service (SAPS; N = 685). The questionnaires were translated into Afrikaans and Setswana and were administered together with the original English version. MAIN FINDINGS: The results indicated that a four-factor model, consisting of Exhaustion, Cynicism, Professional Efficacy, and Cognitive Weariness or Burnout, fitted the data best. The scales did not show measurement invariance for Afrikaans, Setswana and English samples. The reliabilities of the Exhaustion and Professional Efficacy subscales were acceptable in the three samples. PRACTICAL/MANAGERIAL IMPLICATIONS: The implication of the results of the study under review is that the adapted MBI-GS scores obtained by the English, Afrikaans and Setswana home language speaking participants were not comparable in terms of the different translations of the instrument. Therefore, separate norms have to be developed to assess the extent of burnout experienced by the English, Afrikaans and Setswana home language speaking members of the SAPS who participated in the study. As the translated versions of the adapted MBI-GS are clearly not equivalent, more studies are needed to minimise the semantic differences existing between the different translations of the instrument. CONTRIBUTION/VALUE-ADD: To date, no research regarding burnout has been conducted in South Africa within the different language groups by means of translated measuring instruments

    Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)

    This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
