Some Comments on Rosner\u27s Multiple Logistic Model for Clustered Data
Rosner (1984, Biometrics 41, 1025-1035) proposed a binary regression model for analyzing binary response data gathered in clusters or groups. This model is useful for understanding the degree of intracluster correlation among responses, adjusted for the potential confounding effects of other covariates. However, estimates of the effects of covariates on the binary outcome obtained using Rosner\u27s model can be misleading. For example, we show that the covariate effects given by Rosner\u27s model do not correspond to those measured by either of the two standard approaches for correlated binary data. We present an example which compares the regression coefficients arising from fits of Rosner\u27s model to other logistic models for clustered observations, using data from a study of breast disease

Use of the polymerase chain reaction to clone the potato leafroll virus coat protein gene directly from the total RNA of infected plants
The potato leafroll virus (PLRV) coat protein (CP) gene was directly cloned from the total RNA extracted from virus-infected plants. First strand cDNA synthesis was not necessarily specific; it was equally efficient using either random or CP-specific primers. The viral sequence encoding the coat protein was specifically amplified from the total population of cDNA molecules by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), using specific primers bordering the CP gene. The unique amplified product thus obtained was cloned blunt-end into the pT7T318U plasmid vector, and the authenticity of the cloned gene verified by sequence analysis. This cloning strategy obviates the need for virus purification. Sequence comparison of the CP gene of the Italian isolate and those of five other PLRV isolates revealed a close similarity to the three European and the Canadian isolates, and a more distant relationship with the Australian one. © 1995 Kluwer Academic Publishers

Regional aspects of decision-making support for rural development in Poland
Measures for rural development should be adapted to the specific regional conditions and national programs should allow for different regional priorities. However, decision-making for policy measures often takes place under special conditions with many concerned actors, unstructured decision problems and time pressure. These conditions, decision-makers in administrations and institutions are faced with, make the formation of policy-measures for rural development a complex matter. Thus, there is the question arising how decision-makers can be supported in setting priorities for allocating budgets for policy measures among regions. Recently, multi criteria decision-making approaches are discussed to tackle these kinds of decision problems. We show exemplarily for the Polish program of rural development, how decision-making could be supported using a multi-objective programming approach. Different preferences of actors can be considered explicitly by visualizing “trade-offs” and an interactive use of the approach. For example, a political "equity" objective is implemented as a constraint in the programming approach, restricting the budget differences between regions to a defined level. By a parameterization of the bound for budget differences, the "trade-off" between three objectives is displayed and evaluated. Using the exemplary programming approach, it is shown that the objective values of the two main objectives of the PROW decline, when the budget differences between regions are restricted for pursuing a political "equity" objective.Regional Budgeting, Interactive Decision-making support, Multi-objective Programming (MOP), Community/Rural/Urban Development,
