Ontological analysis of business systems analysis techniques: Experiences and proposals for an enhanced methodology
For many years in the area of business systems analysis and design, practitioners and researchers alike have been searching for some comprehensive basis on which to evaluate, compare, and engineer techniques that are promoted for use in the modelling of systems' requirements. To date, while many frameworks, factors, and facets have been forthcoming, most of them appear not to be based on a sound theory. In light of this dilemma, over the last 10 years, attention has been devoted by researchers to the use of ontology to provide some theoretical basis for the advancement of the business systems modelling discipline. While the selected ontologies are reasonably mature, it is the actual process of an ontological analysis that still lacks rigour. The current procedure leaves room for individual interpretations and is one reason for criticism of the entire ontological analysis. This chapter proposes an enhanced procedural model for the ontological analysis based on the use of meta-models, the involvement of more than one coder and metrics. This model is explained with examples from various ontological analyses

Learning from Context to Improve Business Processes
K. Ploesser, M. Peleg, P.Soffer, M. Rosemann, and J. Recker, are members of a team of researchers from Queensland University, Australia, Stanford University, USA and Haifa University, Israel, who are currently investigating how context-awareness can become an integral part of business process modeling. They argue that to get to the next level of process management we must broaden our analysis beyond internal processes to the contextual environment in which the processes are embedded. Read this compelling Article for their take on how this will impact business process management in the future
Preface of 22nd International Conference on Business Process Management, BPM 2024
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 22nd International Conference on Business Process Management, BPM 2024, which took place in Krakow, Poland, in September 2024.
The 29 full papers included in this book were carefully reviewed and selected from 144 submissions. They were organized in topical sections as follows: Foundations; Engineering; and Management
Workflow management
Workflow management has its origin in the office automation systems of the seventies, but it is not until fairly recently that conceptual and technological breakthroughs have led to its widespread adoption. In fact, nowadays, processawareness has become an accepted and integral part of various types of systems. Through the use of process-aware information systems, workflows can be specified and enacted, thus providing automated support for business processes. A workflow explicitly represents control-flow dependencies between the various tasks of the business process, the information that is required and that can be produced by them, and the link between these tasks and the resources, be they human or not, which can execute them. In this way, processes can be performed more efficiently and effectively, compliance with respect to standard procedures and practices can be monitored more closely, and rapid change in response to evolving market conditions can be achieved more easily. This chapter provides an overview of the field of workflow management

CoSMo: A Framework to Instantiate Conditioned Process Simulation Models
Process simulation is gaining attention for its ability to assess potential performance improvements and risks associated with business process changes. The existing literature presents various techniques, generally grounded in process models discovered from event log data or built upon deep learning algorithms. These techniques have specific strengths and limitations. Traditional data-driven approaches offer increased interpretability, while deep learning-based excel at generalizing changes across large event logs. However, the practical application of deep learning faces challenges related to managing stochasticity and integrating information for what-if analysis. This paper introduces a novel recurrent neural architecture tailored to discover COnditioned process Simulation MOdels (CoSMo) based on user-based constraints or any other nature of a-priori knowledge. This architecture facilitates the simulation of event logs that adhere to specific constraints by incorporating declarative-based rules into the learning phase as an attempt to fill the gap of incorporating information into deep learning models to perform what-if analysis. Experimental validation illustrates CoSMo’s efficacy in simulating event logs while adhering to predefined declarative conditions, emphasizing both control-flow and data-flow perspectives
