Wikipedia, the world’s fifth most-used Web site, is a good illustration of the growing credibility of online resources. In his article in Ariadne earlier this year, “Wikipedia: Reflections on Use and Academic Acceptance”, Brian Whalley described the debates around accuracy and review, in the context of geology. He concluded that ‘If Wikipedia is the first port of call, as it already seems to be, for information requirement traffic, then there is a commitment to build on Open Educational Resources (OERs) of various kinds and improve their quality.’ In a similar approach to the Geological Society event that Whalley describes, Sarah Fahmy of JISC worked with Wikimedia and the British Library on a World War One (WWI) Editathon. There is a rich discourse about the way that academics relate to Wikipedia

AMBER LENSES TO BLOCK BLUE LIGHT AND IMPROVE SLEEP: A RANDOMIZED TRIAL

    No full text
All light is not equal: blue wavelengths are the most potent portion of the visible electromagnetic spectrum for circadian regulation. Therefore, blocking blue light could create a form of physiologic darkness. Because the timing and quantity of light and darkness both affect sleep, evening use of amber lenses to block blue light might affect sleep quality. Mood is also affected by light and sleep; therefore, mood might be affected by blue light blockade. In this study, 20 adult volunteers were randomized to wear either blue-blocking (amber) or yellow-tinted (blocking ultraviolet only) safety glasses for 3 h prior to sleep. Participants completed sleep diaries during a one-week baseline assessment and two weeks' use of glasses. Outcome measures were subjective: change in overall sleep quality and positive/negative affect. Results demonstrated that sleep quality at study outset was poorer in the amber lens than the control group. Two-by three-way ANOVA revealed significant ( p < .001) interaction between quality of sleep over the three weeks and experimental condition. At the end of the study, the amber lens group experienced significant ( p < .001) improvement in sleep quality relative to the control group and positive affect ( p = .005). Mood also improved significantly relative to controls. A replication with more detailed data on the subjects' circadian baseline and objective outcome measures is warranted. Response and Adaptation of Escherichia coli to Suppression of the Amber Stop Codon

    No full text
Some extant organisms reassign the amber stop codon to a sense codon through evolution, and suppression of the amber codon with engineered tRNAs has been exploited to expand the genetic code for incorporating non-canonical amino acids (ncAAs) in live systems. However, it is unclear how the host cells respond and adapt to such amber suppression. Herein we suppressed the amber codon in Escherichia coli with an orthogonal tRNA/synthetase pair and cultured the cells under such a pressure for about 500 generations. We discovered that E. coli quickly counteracted the suppression with transposon insertion to inactivate the orthogonal synthetase. Persistent amber suppression evading transposon inactivation led to global proteomic changes with a notable up-regulation of a previously uncharacterized protein (YdiI) for which we identified an unexpected function of expelling plasmids. These results should be valuable for understanding codon reassignment in genetic code evolution and for improving the efficiency of ncAA incorporation.Biochemistry & Molecular BiologyChemistry, MedicinalSCI(E)[email protected],SI1744-17491

Novel and flexible approach to access the open ocean: Uses of sailing research vessel Lady Amber during SPURS-2. Oceanography, 32(2), (2019): 116-121, doi: 10.5670/oceanog.2019.219.SPURS-2 (Salinity Processes in the Upper-ocean Regional Study 2) used the schooner Lady Amber, a small sailing research vessel, to deploy, service, maintain, and recover a variety of oceanographic and meteorological instruments in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Low operational costs allowed us to frequently deploy floats and drifters to collect data necessary for resolving the regional circulation of the eastern tropical Pacific. The small charter gave us the opportunity to deploy drifters in locations chosen according to current conditions, to recover and deploy various autonomous instruments in a targeted and adaptive manner, and to collect additional near-surface and atmospheric measurements in the remote SPURS-2 region.Tragically, Lady Amber Captain Peter Flanagan passed away on March 15, 2016, after the initial transit. This was a big loss for his friends and crew—his enthusiasm will be sorely missed. We acknowledge the owner and crew of Lady Amber for remaining committed to the SPURS-2 work. This work would not have been possible without Captain Arran Flanagan and Captain Ryan Struthers and the capable crew of Lady Amber. This project was supported by NASA grant NNX15AT40G. We also acknowledge the contribution of Justin Burnett, Jesse Dosher, and Aaron Paget to the design and installation of the LAPS, and the support and cooperation from all the SPURS-2 PIs

Reading acts of narrative appropriation: four instances of fraudulent memoir

    No full text
PhDThis thesis examines acts of narrative appropriation, the telling of purportedly‘authentic’ life stories by those for whom the stories are not theirs to tell. This misuse or subversion of genre - the discipline of historical writing and the category of autobiography - becomes a means for cultural, social and political dissimulation, and the analysis focuses both on the act: the event, trespass, or ‘theft’ of another’s life story, and on the cultural meaning that this event reveals. These narrative acts are approached theoretically through discussions of what it means to be an author, a reader, and through the consideration of literary and social genre, category and form. In exploring identities at particular risk of appropriation, this thesis shows how fraudulent appropriated narratives affect our reading of the world, and in turn influence our perception of already marginalized social groups. My primary examples include prostitution ‘narratives’, Native North American ‘memoir,’ and fraudulent Holocaust survivor ‘testimony,’ with each text providing decoded evidence of ‘genre-bending’ exhibiting a social and political intent. These works seek to be read as authentic personal narratives, as autobiography, and that is how they have been presented to the reader. However, they are imposters – fictional tales desiring the elevated status of historical authenticity and willing to bend the rules and contracts of genre to achieve their end. Here the appearance of authenticity is achieved through the use of cultural and social ‘myth,’ or perceptions of cultural identity, and as such its fraudulent construction is first and foremost a social act, with a social and economic motivation. As this thesis concludes, these texts are most successful when their own political and social ideologies echo and confirm that of the readership; when their subjects, the fraudulent ‘I’ at the center of the text is also a performative elaboration of cultural belief

Electrical, spectral and optical performance of yellow-green and amber micro-pixelated InGaN light-emitting diodes

    No full text
Micro-pixelated InGaN LED arrays operating at 560 and 600 nm, respectively, are demonstrated for what the authors believe to be the first time. Such devices offer applications in areas including bioinstrumentation, visible light communications and optoelectronic tweezers. The devices reported are based on new epitaxial structures, retaining conventional (0 0 0 1) orientation, but incorporating electron reservoir layers which enhance the efficiency of radiative combination in the active regions. A measured output optical power density up to 8 W cm(-2) (4.4 W cm(-2)) has been achieved from a representative pixel of the yellow-green (amber) LED array, substantially higher than that from conventional broad-area reference LEDs fabricated from the same wafer material. Furthermore, these micro-LEDs can sustain a high current density, up to 4.5 kA cm(-2), before thermal rollover. A significant blueshift of the emission wavelength with increasing injection current is observed, however. This blueshift saturates at 45 nm (50 nm) for the yellow-green (amber) LED array, and numerical simulations have been used to gain insight into the responsible mechanisms in this microstructured format of device. In the relatively low-current-density regime (<3.5 kA cm(-2)) the blueshift is attributable to both the screening of the piezoelectric field by the injected carriers and the band-filling effect, whereas in the high-current regime, it is mainly due to band-filling. Further development of the epitaxial wafer material is expected to improve the current-dependent spectral stability.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000300623400005&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Engineering, Electrical & ElectronicMaterials Science, MultidisciplinaryPhysics, Condensed MatterSCI(E)EI9ARTICLE1null2

Atsinaujinęs Palangos gintaro muziejus - Lietuvos dailės muziejaus (LDM) padalinys - 2015 m. balandžio 24 d. lankytojus pasitiko restauruotuose grafų Tiškevičių rūmuose, kuriuose pristatoma ne tik moderni gintaro ekspozicija, bet ir atnaujinti istoriniai eksterjerai, atkurti interjerai. Pirmame aukšte įrengtos aštuonios pirmųjų rūmų šeimininkų gyvenimą iliustruojančios salės. Siekiant atkurti namų autentiką buvo ieškoma patikimų šaltinių. Palangos rūmų projektų techninių brėžinių ir piešinių archyvą pavyko surasti dar 2006 m. Berlyne, Prūsijos valstybės kultūros paveldo slaptajame archyve. Rūmai projektuoti garsaus vokiečių architekto Franzo Heinricho Schwechteno (1841-1924), kuris tuo metu buvo viena žinomiausių figūrų Vilhelmo epochos Berlyno architektūros pasaulyje. Jam buvo skirtas garbingas asmeninio imperatoriaus Vilhelmo II architekto titulas. F. H. Schwechteno sukurti darbai puošia dabartinės Vokietijos, Lenkijos, Italijos, Lietuvos miestus. Pažinti rūmų kasdienio gyvenimo tėkmę padėjo ir svarbiomis „dėlionės“ dalimis tapo ypač negausi ikonografinė medžiaga bei amžininkų užrašyti prisiminimai. Šiame straipsnyje aptariami atkurti Tiškevičių istorinių rūmų pirmo aukšto interjerai, kuriuos puošia baldų komplektai, gobelenai, paveikslai, mažosios plastikos kūriniai iš LDM rinkinių bei privačių kolekcijų. Lankytojams pristatomos aštuonios salės: holas, Renginių salė, arba Didysis valgomasis, Raudonasis salonas, Didysis salonas, Grafienės kabinetas, Mėlynasis salonas, Jaunojo grafo kabinetas ir Mažasis salonas. Kiekviena iš salių publikacijoje bus aptarta atskirame skyriuje. Reikšminiai žodžiai: Ampyro stilius; Architektas; Baldai; F. H. This publication discusses the first floor interiors of Tiškevičiai Palace which are decorated with furniture, tapestries, paintings, and small plastic pieces from the collections of LAM and private. Visitors are welcomed in the eight halls showing the life of the first hosts of the palace: The Hall, the Event Hall, or the Grand Dining Room, the Red Salon, Grand Salon, Countess Cabinet, the Blue Salon, the Young Count Cabinet and the Small Salon. The historic interior of the palace has been restored on the basis of preserved iconography, testimonies of contemporaries, sketches and drawings of the palace architect F. H. Schwechten, which were found, in 2006, in the Prussian Cultural Heritage State Secret Archives (Berlin). Author of the exhibition is director of LAM, art critic Romualdas Budrys. Authentic 19th c. Baroque, Empire, and Chippendale style exhibits bring back the visitor to a daily mansion life of the end of the 19th - the early 20th c
