Mr. Charles H. Gibson,
Tuskegee Institute, Alabama.
Sir and dear friend:
This is not a seasonal greeting* If
another month, another festival abounded, still would I ad¬
dress you. I am alive to a fine, earnest life, not, I beg
to assure you, to the emotions of the joyous feelings that
recur with the tide of faith. However, believe me, I am one
of the faithful and a true believer.
This humble note is simply to recite the pride and happi¬
ness I had when last I saw you, but a week or so ago. Abounding
in health and all the natural faculties, you appeared to me rich
in enthusiasm and earnestness. I noted the unaffected sincerity
of your character, the simple, profound comradeship with which
you still hailed the returning wanderer, you were still as ac-
urate as the thousand balances struck by the faithful pen. You
were as simple as addition, as impressive as the multiplication
table. You go back to the prophecy of our Washington end yet are
you capable of the turrets of Askelon. Not much do I say when
I am present with the old order but my feelings are deep.
May God bless you. Yours has been a good, gloriow?, fine life.
Yours sincerely, 5

William Roscoe, Liverpool, [Lancashire], to Sir James Edward Smith
Sending letter via Benson Rathbone. Forthcoming publications: publishing a 48 volume collection of the Italian poets with Mr Valpy, the London printer, discusses his ideas for the series; writing a life of [Alexander] Pope [(1688-1744), poet] and publishing a new edition of Pope's works with an association of London booksellers, a considerable labour considering the continuing debate as to his moral and poetical characters; adding an additional volume to his "Life of Lorenzo"; and his "Holkham Catalogue" [of manuscripts in library of Thomas William Coke].
'Hedychium excelsum' has flowered and a new species of 'Roscoea' sent as a species of 'Orchis' about to flower [at Liverpool Botanic Garden]; proposes name 'speciosa' or 'lucida', further remarks on the plant. Has made additions to genus 'Canna' and drawn up synoptical table of 20 species, and similar for 'Hedychium' and 'Curcuma' [for his "Monandrian plants of the order Scitamineae.."]. Thanks Smith for "Correspondence of Linnaeus & other Naturalists". Smith's anecdote about identity of the peach and nectarine reminds him of a similar confusion at Liverpool Botanic Garden where an unknown plant was distributed as 'Hedychium flavum' until it dramatically increased in size the following year and turned out to be 'H. coronarium'; [Roscoe has made a sketch of the flower, in ink].
Apologises to Lord Mountnorris [George Annesley] for detaining his 'Scitamineae' figures for so long; has made copies

Constructing the retail investor : performativity and power in the market for investment services
This paper examines retail investment as a practice performed by marketing knowledge and highlights the power effects of market devices. Using a qualitative study of retail investors in the United Kingdom, it considers the devices and discourses that structure investment behaviour. It draws attention to parallels between the precepts of the market studies programme and the Foucauldian literature of governance technologies in neo-liberal capitalism. Market devices and heterodox ways of understanding the financial market constitute investors as docile consumers of investment services. Self-discipline and confession are normalising technologies that help investors cope with difficulties and losses in the market.Non peer reviewe
Controlling clay pore pressures for cut-and-cover tunneling
To facilitate construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link through Ashford in cut-and-cover tunnels and retained cut, it was necessary to control pore water pressures in the relatively low-permeability, laminated Weald Clay. This was achieved by means of an ejector well dewatering system. This paper describes and discusses the investigations carried out to characterise the in situ permeability of the Weald Clay, the design and performance of the ejector well system installed, and the associated soil surface settlements. The correlation between the changes in pore pressure and settlements at the site is compared with that given by Preene et al. This comparison is used to evaluate the method, and to provide some insights into the selection of appropriate parameter values of soil permeability and stiffnes
