Effect of prone and supine position on sleep, apneas, and arousal in preterm infants
OBJECTIVE. Prematurely born compared with term born infants are at increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome, particularly if slept prone. The purpose of this work was to test the hypothesis that preterm infants with or without bronchopulmonary dysplasia being prepared for neonatal unit discharge would sleep longer and have less arousals and more central apneas in the prone position.METHODS. This was a prospective observational study in a tertiary NICU. Twenty-four infants (14 with bronchopulmonary dysplasia) with a median gestational age of 27 weeks were studied at a median postconceptional age of 37 weeks. Video polysomnographic recordings of 2-channel electroencephalogram, 2-channel electro-oculogram, nasal airflow, chest and abdominal wall movements, limb movements, electrocardiogram, and oxygen saturation were made in the supine and prone positions, each position maintained for 3 hours. The duration of sleep, sleep efficiency (total sleep time/total recording time), and number and type of apneas, arousals, and awakenings were recorded.RESULTS. Overall, in the prone position, infants slept longer, had greater sleep efficiency (89.5% vs 72.5%), and had more central apneas (median: 5.6 vs 2.2), but fewer obstructive apneas (0.5 vs 0.9). The infants had more awakenings (9.7 vs 3.5) and arousals per hour (13.6 vs 9.0) when supine. There were similar findings in the bronchopulmonary dysplasia infants.CONCLUSIONS. Very prematurely born infants studied before neonatal unit discharge sleep more efficiently with fewer arousals and more central apneas in the prone position, emphasizing the importance of recommending supine sleeping after neonatal unit discharge for prematurely born infants
Phraseological Units in "Nathan und seine Kinder" by Mirjam Pressler
Diplomsko delo obravnava nemške frazeme, ki sem jih našla v mladinskem romanu Nathan und seine Kinder pisateljice Mirjam Pressler. Glavni cilj moje diplomske naloge je najti razlike in podobnosti v razmerju nemškega in slovenskega jezika.
Delo je razdeljeno na dva dela. V teoretičnem delu so podrobneje predstavljene osnove frazeologije, lastnosti frazemov in njihova uporaba v mladinski literaturi. The following thesis will deal with idioms, found in the young adult novel Nathan und seine Kinder by author Mirjam Pressler. The main goal of the thesis is to establish the differences and similarities present when comparing idioms found in the German language, with those found in Slovenian.
The thesis is divided into two parts. The first is theoretical and features a presentation of the basics of phraseology, the characteristics of idioms and their use in young adult literature. A chapter is devoted to the authorMirjam Pressler and her work. The empirical part of the thesis deals with idioms found in the literary work itself, compares them with corresponding words in Slovenian and determines their level of equivalence based on said comparison
Book Review of Neighbours in Arms: An American Senator’s Quest for Disarmament in a Nuclear Subcontinent by Larry Pressler
As chairman of the US Senate s Arms Control Subcommittee, Larry Pressler advocated the now-famous Pressler Amendment, enforced in 1990. Aid and military sales to Pakistan were blocked, including a consignment of F-16 fighter aircraft, changing forever the tenor of the United States relationships with Pakistan and India, and making Pressler a temporary hero throughout India and a devil in Pakistan . This book reveals what went on behind the scenes in the years when the Pressler Amendment was in force, through a cast of characters that include presidents, prime ministers, senators and generals in the US, India and Pakistan. It exposes the enormous power wielded by the military-industrial complex, which the author terms Octopus , and how it controls significant aspects of the American presence in the Indian subcontinent
Contributions to the Advancement of the Neon Arts
This thesis concerns contributions made to the field of the Neon Arts. The field
originated in the mid-nineteenth century with the invention of the Geissler tube, a
blown glass tube internally illuminated by the electrical excitement of the low
pressure gas it contained. The art was predominately represented in the mid-
1900s by conventional Neon signage. The introduction of the Studio Glass Arts
movement in the 1960s began to expand the range of expression beyond signage,
incorporating different glass structures, filling gases, power options, and other
emerging technologies to produce a wide range of illuminated sculpture.
In the span of his twenty-five year career, Wayne Strattman has made a variety of
contributions to the field. These have included:
Publications: The publication of a primary reference book, Neon Techniques, 4th
Edition, with over five thousand copies sold, and one hundred articles in the
leading trade journal, “Signs of the Times.” These publications not only
consolidated historical and newly emerging technical knowledge but also
incorporated a significant amount of original research. Results of this research
include techniques for accelerating the filling of glass tubes with gases at low
pressure, new ways to remove impurities from glass tubes, the adoption of foreline
traps for enhanced vacuum pumping, new ways to stress test glass, and new ways
to test outgassing rates.
Patents: The development of two individual and one shared patent for new Neon
technologies. One invention in particular, LuminglasTM (the first kinetic,
interactive, flat plasma device capable of producing planes of moving light) has
been incorporated in, among other applications, consumer products, movie set
displays, and architectural installations around the globe.
3
Artwork: The first art pieces to incorporate flat panel, kinetic gas discharge
displays. The author has also explored a range of additional illumination media
and refined their qualities of expression for use in sculpture.
Products: The commercial realization of four technical devices to aid in the
development of neon sculpture and eleven consumer products that have
significantly heightened popular awareness of new Neon technologies (as
evidenced by sales in the tens of millions of dollars.)
Community Involvement: Formative member of the developing community of
illuminated glass artists (whose chosen media include and extend beyond
traditional neon). The author curated the first Illuminated Glass Art show and has
been an active representative of Neon within the Glass Art Society

This projet report pretends to present a proposed translation into Portuguese of the first six chapters of the youth novel by Mirjam Pressler Wenn das Glück kommt, muss man ein Stuhl hinstellen.
This german author was selected because she has a vast literary work awarded in the area of children´s literature. It would be interesting to translate Mirjam Pressler into Portuguese, thus by making her literary work known to the young portuguese people the literary work of this author that brings many social and historical teachings in the context of Holocaust and post war.
This work was chosen in particular because it has a very autobiographical character and is a passionate book in which the central character, Halinka, despite living a difficult childhood and adolescence manages to build her identity from broken pieces and find a way of life.
This particular youth novel was chosen because young people should be encouraged to read, thus enabling their linguistic and cognitive development, but also their personal and social development.
Troughout this project some translation difficulties will be identificated from German to Portuguese
Multimodal characterisation of the infant response to retinopathy of prematurity screening and treatment
Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a condition which affects premature infants and is a cause of childhood blindness. Screening is performed repeatedly during the preterm period, using binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy (BIO), to identify disease at a treatable stage; unfortunately screening and treatment are considered to be painful and stressful for infants. Pain and stress during the preterm period can lead to negative consequences for infant development. Reduction of pain and stress during ROP procedures has therefore been attempted using pharmacological and non-pharmacological strategies. However, it is challenging to evaluate the effectiveness of such interventions due to limitations in the accurate measurement of infant pain and stress.
In this thesis, novel approaches to quantifying infant pain and stress evoked by ROP procedures are presented. Infant brain activity was characterised using quantitative electroencephalography (EEG) analysis to test the hypothesis that ROP screening evokes noxious-related changes in infant brain activity. The results of this study suggest BIO ROP screening evokes a significant increase in higher frequency brain activity (12 - 30 Hz), and that increase in relative beta power may be a measure of nociception in preterm infants.
Infant cardiac autonomic reactivity was characterised using heart rate variability (HRV) analysis to test the hypothesis that ROP screening evokes stress-related autonomic changes. The results of this study suggest BIO ROP screening evokes significant reduction in HRV measures of parasympathetic nervous system activity, indicating a physiological stress response in preterm infants.
An approach to characterising the infant response to non-contact ultra-widefield photography (Optos screening) and ROP treatment was also demonstrated. Recruitment of subjects was curtailed by the outbreak of COVID-19, therefore the investigations are presented as an example of approaches which could be performed in a larger sample size.
In summary, the research described in this thesis aims to contribute to understanding of the infant experience of ROP procedures; to characterise changes in noxious-related brain activity and stress-related cardiac reactivity evoked by BIO ROP screening, and to use these measures to investigate the infant response to an alternative screening method and to ROP treatments. Improved understanding of the infant experience of ROP screening and treatment may allow clinicians to better identify and treat infant pain and stress during essential clinical procedures
