In a context of increasing globalization and multiculturalism, heritage conservation will become ever more a social practice, and will play a key role in the recognition of shared values, in managing cultural conflicts and fostering sustainable development. Through the integration of technical and social dimension of the interventions, their quality and effectiveness can be increased. Within the technological field, the social dimension of innovation is addressed through processes of Technology Assessment. They adopt consensus building techniques and involve different social actors in a debate on issues which, despite having a strong social interest, are usually addressed only within groups of experts. Given the social relevance of heritage conservation, structured assessment processes could be experimented also in this field, implemented at the local level with a twofold objective. First, they could contribute to the recognition of shared values, increasing the fairness of the decisions on operations and management strategies. Second, assuming the techniques as object of assessment, they could help to disseminate innovative products and technologies. At the same time, they could deepen the knowledge of local techniques, which sometimes are more effective or sustainable, providing useful information to orient further research

The publication focuses on the notion of a "mutual contemporary heritage": the term "contemporary" does not only refer to the era of building construction (based on the Mediterranean area in the middle of the 20th century), it also refers to the more or less recent constructions that are characterized by a certain inherited contemporaneity, or by the recent recognition of such value. The theme of contemporary intervention on the heritage is addressed by referring to the current and unavoidable cultural debate relating to sustainable development and by questioning the role it could have on the built heritage, which is a resource that needs to be protected and valued

The culture of built heritage prevention, theoretically consolidated, experiences some difficulties when transferred to the practice. The major weaknesses arise within built historic systems: if local communities don’t recognize their cultural value, in fact, the effectiveness of the processes of long-term preservation is not guaranteed in any way. The direct involvement of communities in conservation processes, from early stages, can foster learning processes capable of diffusing the disposition to care, and change the social demand on conservation, management and use of built heritage, enabling the dissemination of preventive strategies

The interventions to improve energy efficiency on historical built heritage may lead to conflicts between the need to contain the transformation, according to the principles of minimum intervention, and the purpose to meet the users needs. In order to study feasible and compatible strategies, the heritage site of the company town of Crespi d’Adda has been chosen as a case study. The energy assessment of different sets of requalification strategies, associating intervention on buildings and use of renewable energies, has demonstrated that it is possible to reach a significant reduction of energy also in historical contexts, where preservation of the architectural character is a major requirement

The study has carried out a survey on feasible strategies to improve energy efficiency in historic buildings and heritage sites. The company town of Crespi d’Adda, a WHL site, has been kept as a case study. By evaluating different sets of requalification skills it has been demonstrate that, by associating intervention on buildings and use of renewable energies, a significant reduction of energy demand is reachable also in historical contexts where preservation of the architectural character is a major requirement
