Introduction to Spirituality
This chapter focuses on the concept of spirituality and evaluates some of the theoretical perspectives related to spirituality in healthcare generally. Challenges around defining spirituality, reasons for integrating spirituality into practice, the relationship of spirituality to religion, how to put spirituality into practice and ethical issues are discussed. The large and diverse literature on the history and meaning of the term spirituality is not explored. The chapter instead seeks to explore how spirituality is generally understood and applied in healthcare
Introduction to Rogers’ Availability and Vulnerability Framework for Operationalising Spirituality
This chapter introduces Rogers’ Availability and Vulnerability framework which has been developed to help APNs operationalise spirituality. Spirituality is innately human and is influenced by the context we work in and how we emotionally engage with those in our care. Spirituality can be simply integrated into APN practice and operationalised through availability and vulnerability. Working in this way enables spirituality to be addressed on a practical level. Several examples from practice illustrate aspects of the framework
Global APN Case Studies in Spirituality:Stories of Hope from the United Kingdom
Spirituality is not routinely integrated into healthcare practice in he United Kingdom (UK). Many practitioners, when asked, are confused about the definition of spirituality and routinely conflate it with religion. However, when you talk to practitioners about holistic care, they will often use terminology which connects to spirituality, for example person-centred care and compassionate care. This chapter firstly discusses the Advanced Practice nurse role in the UK before exploring how spirituality in healthcare is understood. Two case studies are then presented to illustrate spirituality being integrated into practice by Advanced Nurse Practitioners in a primary care and hospital setting
Emotional and Spiritual Well-Being and resilience for Advanced Practitioners
The chapter presents and discusses some of the current stressors that advanced practitioners may face along their professional journey. It also discusses recent work around spirituality and emotional and physical well-being to provide suggestions on how advanced practitioners can overcome these challenges and build resilience in their professional careers

Spiritually Competent Practice and Cultural Aspects of Spirituality
In this chapter we introduce the concept of spiritually competent practice as a way of avoiding disputes about the definition of spirituality and avoiding confusion with religion. Spiritually competent practice is described. It involves compassionate engagement, supporting people in sustaining a sense of meaning and purpose even when it is challenged by suffering and illness. It addresses the whole person as a unique individual, in the context of their family and cultural connections. As well as specific competencies it requires personal qualities, including the capacity to form I-Thou relationships and a managerial system that enables practitioners to attend to personal as well as technical aspects of healthcare. An ontological model for lifelong learning through reflective practice is presented. Availability and Vulnerability, a framework relating to personal qualities and specifically developed in research with APNs, is described and illuminated by a case study. This can also be understood within the overarching description of spiritually competent practice. We have looked briefly at how to take into account cultural issues without forgetting that individuals within a culture also have their own personal understanding of what spirituality means to them which is not necessarily congruent with their cultural background
Advanced Practice Beyond the UK:An International Context

How two practitioners conceptualize spiritually competent practice
This chapter explains how spiritually competent care can be conceptualised in ways that are relevant to practice. Two practitioners focus on how they have approached this question and include insights from their research as well as professional and personal experiences. The chapter begins by Laura providing descriptions of how utilising narrative therapy skills can support practitioners to provide spiritually competent practice to those they are working with in a variety of settings. Hospitality is an important concept for health and social care practitioners, including narrative therapists, and there has been growing interest in it as an ethical manner of engagement in contemporary society. Availability and Vulnerability are two other concepts, derived from a contemporary dispersed Christian community, which also offer much for integrating spiritually into competent practice. Narrative therapy is an established approach that is particularly suited to helping people find and articulate their hopes, and what gives them a sense of meaning and purpose in their lives
