LITERARY TEXTBY N.S. LESKOV AS A SYSTEM OF LANGUAGE MEANS
The article gives a linguistic and stylistic analysis of N.S. Leskov’s fiction. One of the main ambitions of the author is to reveal the possible correlation between the language features of N.S. Leskov’s heroes and the Russian cultural tradition of the past. Some original and vivid examples of the speech of representatives of specific Russian professions and estates are analyzed as well as linguistic parallels between complicated church language and the writer’s system of stylistic devices are defined. We show new interlinks between historic, linguistic and literary aspects of the text and especially N.S. Leskov’s unusual world as a form of culturally-historically determined consciousness. We pay special attention to Old Slavonic «experiment» in Leskov’s texts and skaz , polyphony of names of his heroes and writers’ examples of folk etymology. We came to the conclusion that in The Notes of the Unknown different stylistic and linguistic devices are combined
Western Eyes on the Latin East: The Chronique d’Ernoul et de Bernard le Trésorier and Robert of Clari’s Conquête de Constantinople
The article compares the narratives on the Fourth Crusade by Robert de Clari and the Ernoul-Bernard author; their similarities may go back to the cultural milieu of Corbie abbey, that was an important centre for the production of French historiography writtent in prose at the beginning of the thirteenth century. An appendix explores the status quaestionis about Bernard the Treasurer of Corbie abbey, whose name appears in the colophon of two manuscripts of the Ernoul-Bernard Chronique
The resurrection of the author
81 leaves ; 29 cmIncludes abstract.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 76-81).In The Resurrection of the Author, Daniel Trainor-McKinnon supports a form of intentionalism by arguing that intentions and meaning are metaphysically separate from artworks. This form of intentionalism is what he calls externalist intentionalism, which is the theory of art interpretation that holds that intentions are often relevant (though not always necessary) to understanding artworks. Because it holds this, externalist intentionalism is an adequate response to both the anti-intentionalist objection that artists' intentions are inadmissible in critical examinations of artworks because they are external to those artworks, and the neo-Wittgensteinian intentionalist claim that intentions are internal properties of artworks. A consequent study of allusion shows that some features of art are dependent on intentions for their existence and correct interpretation, while a concluding section examines externalist intentionalism's compatibility with evaluative criticism
An artificial intelligence system to model and guide chemical synthesis planning by computer: a proposal
One of the central problems in applying computer methods to chemical synthesis planning is Search Guidance. The ability of a chemist to guide an interactive computer in its search for syntheses and the possibilities for self-guidance in Artificial Intelligence programs are both limited by the form and content of the search information that is made available as the exploration proceeds. A system for Search Modelling is proposed in this paper which can augment existing systems for synthesis planning and serce to gather, analyze and amplify the information generated during controlled exploration. The search management model is specified in a simple descriptive form and two example models are included in the paper. The guidance of search using te information gathered is specified by a rule set in the simple syntax of Condition=>Action pairs. A chemist can interactively modify this rule set.
Further, an advanced search model is presented which, by introducing the powerful concept of a Planning Space, allows the search for syntheses to go forward, backward and to leap into the middle under controlled conditions.Technical report DCS-TR-4
Language and author's means of expression of evaluation in early consumer orientation articles by N.S. Leskov
The article considers the expressive impact of linguistic units and the author's paradigmatics and syntagmatics, reflecting the perception of everyday Russian life realities in the second half of the 19th century. With estimated register, N.S. Leskov certifies the state of facilities for natural needs of a man as a highly unsuitable, dangerous to health. Oppositions as a manifestation of idiostylistics reveal the presence of one of the correlates of potential or implicit components and characterize the publicist as a careful person, a refined stylist Along with stylistically marked lexical units with the negative connotation, the author introduces the means where connotative potential reference component multiplies the context partner. Purpose of the research is to identify the way how language means explain living conditions marked by Russian commoners in the second half of the 19th century. The main methods of the study were contextual analysis method, descriptive, comparative, discourse analysis
Lecture(s) récursive(s) : analyse et interprétations (Patrick Sériot, N.S. Troubetzkoy, l'Europe et l'humanité, écrits linguistiques et paralinguistiques)
Vâlku-Poustovaia, Irina - Recursive reading(s) : analysis and interpretations (Patrick Sériot: N.S. Troubetzkoy L'Europe et l'humanité, écrits linguistiques et paralinguistiques).
This article reacts to Sériot's book by bringing into play the author's subjective position, in reaction to reading. After a brief presentation of the book at hand, she concentrates on the notion of recursivity as part and parcel of the reception (comprehension) of any text, allowing for the possibility of contex-tualizing a discourse while admitting that a multitude of contexts is always possible. Reading N.S. Troubetzkoy and his Eurasist doctrine as presented by P. Seriot, raises a question about the unavoidable recursivity of all comprehension and about the importance, in interpreting a text, of the theoretical approach chosen. The article tries to show how the analysis (the reporting discourse) can lead to different interpretations, depending on the points of view - original author, translator-analyst, reader-analyst - which, in turn, depend on the expectations each reader has concerning the text. Characterization of metals for Cochlear Implants
The need for Cochlear Implants (CI's) with improved functionality and quality requires new techniques to be used to manufacture the electrode array. Titanium nitride (TiN) is one of the contenders for use as metal in the future CI's, but its characteristics need to be verified, measured and tested. A metal should comply to certain requirements like the ability to deliver enough charge to the nerve ending in the saline environment of the cochlea. TiN is able to withstand a high current density (2.8 mA µm2 ), while aluminium failed due to electromigration; even when coated with TiN. The resistance of a 10mm long and 5µm wide track decreases from 1.08 . 10^4? to 6.9. 10^2? when a combination of Al and TiN is made. This solves the reasonably high resistance of TiN. The self-heating and the change in resistance due to temperature changes (TCR) are measured, because the amount of dissipated heat should stay as low as possible. TiN has a low TCR, 5.9 . 10^-4. Furthermore, the metal must not dissolve in the environment, which can be checked by a (cyclic) voltammetry and by endurance tests. TiN was able to withstand the harsh tests. The improved functionality and quality asks for the addition of transistors to the electrode array. Furthermore, this thesis shows that it is possible to create working npn, NMOS and PMOS transistors with TiN using only 5 masks.Electronic InstrumentationMicroelectronics & Computer EngineeringElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
"Gory kavkaskie dlja menja svjaščenny..." (N.S. Tichonov - poèt kavkaskogo raja)
The article offers a review of episodes of N.S. Tikhonov’s creative address to the theme of the Caucasus, which is traditional for Russian literature; the main stages of interpretation of the theme are outlined, and some particularly important influences on Tikhonov, both classical and senior contemporaries, are noted. The author understands Tikhonov’s poetry as Soviet in its ideological basis: it is manifested both in his constant calls for peace between different peoples, and in Tikhonov’s confidence that the new political order is capable of ensuring this peace, and in the fact that socialist construction and technical progress in Tikhonov’s depiction do not violate the idyllic harmony of Caucasian nature. There is a monographic analysis of some poems from the cycles Poems about Kakheti (1935) and Mountains (1938-1940)
