    No full text
The intensive care units have been modernized, every day nursing professionals specialize in managing these devices to monitor the patient, running the risk of neglecting the nurse-patient relationship where human care is provided. Objective: to analyze the published literature regarding humanized care for patients in an ICU. Results: 45 records were obtained, and the final sample included 11 articles that met the objective of the review on the inclusion criteria. Humanization promoting strategies refer to fostering communication, empathy, affection and tact / highlighting education for nurses on communication and humanization, recognizing the family as the central axis, since they are the best link with the patient and provide emotional support to it. Conclusion: In the ICU, it is important for the nurse to implement strategies in order to improve humanized care, since it is here that the patient needs his help almost completely to satisfy his basic needs.Resumen. --Abstract. --Introduccion. --Materiales y metodos. --Resultados. --Flujograma. --Discusion. --Conclusion. --Referencias [email protected]@[email protected]

Targeting Transient Receptor Potential Vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) Channel Softly: The Discovery of Passerini Adducts as a Topical Treatment for Inflammatory Skin Disorders

Despite being an old molecule, capsaicin is still a hot topic in the scientific community, and the development of new capsaicinoids is a promising pharmacological approach in the management of skin disorders related to inflammation and pruritus. Here we report the synthesis and the evaluation of capsaicin soft drugs that undergo deactivation by the hydrolyzing activity of skin esterases. The implanting of an ester group in the lipophilic moiety of capsaicinoids by the Passerini multicomponent reaction affords both agonists and antagonists that retain transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 channel (TRPV1) modulating activity and, at the same time, are susceptible to hydrolysis. The most promising antagonist identified shows in vivo anti-nociceptive activity on pruritus and hyperalgesia without producing hyperthermia, thus validating it as novel treatment for dermatological conditions that implicate TRPV1 channel dysfunction

Detective fiction in Cuban society and culture.

    No full text
PhDThe object of this thesis is to reach towards an understanding of Cuban society through a study of its detective fiction and more particularly contemporary Cuban society through the novels of the author and critic, Leonardo Padura Fuentes. The method has been to trace the development of Cuban detective writing and to read Padura Fuentes in the light of the work of twentieth century Western European literary critics and philosophers including Raymond Williams, Antonio Gramsci, Terry Eagleton, Roland Barthes, Jean Paul Sartre, Michel Foucault, Jean François Lyotard and Jean Baudrillard in order to gain a better understanding of the social and historical context from which this genre emerged. By concentrating on the literary texts, I have explored readings which lead out into an analysis of the broader philosophical, political and historical issues raised by the Cuban revolution. Since it deals primarily with modes of deviance and notions of legality and justice within the context of the modern state, detective fiction is particularly well suited to this type of investigation. The intention is to show how this is as valid in the Cuban context as it is in advanced capitalist societies where such research has already been carried out with some success. The thesis comprises an introduction, ten chapters and a conclusion. The chapters are divided into three sections. Chapters 1 to 3 attempt a broad theoretical, historical and socio-political analysis of the cultural reality within which the Cuban revolutionary detective genre emerged. Chapters 4 to 6 analyse the Cuban detective narrative from its inception in the early part of the twentieth century until the emergence of Leonardo Padura Fuentes as the foremost exponent of the genre in Cuba after 1991. Chapters 7- 10 concentrate upon the work of Leonardo Padura Fuentes, offering a reading of his detective tetralogy informed by the preceding discussion. The contribution made by the thesis to knowledge of the subject is to build upon the work of Seymour Menton and Amelia S. Simpson on the development of the Cuban detective novel and to provide analyses of the pre-Revolutionary Cuban detective narrative and the work of Leonardo Padura Fuentes for the first time in the English language. The thesis concludes that the study of this popular genre in Cuba is of crucial importance to the scholar who wishes to reach as full an understanding of the social dynamics within that society as possible. In particular, it proves that Cuban detective fiction provides a useful barometer of social change which records the shifts in the Cuban Zeitgeist that have taken place over the past century

    Multivariate Gram-Charlier Densities

This paper introduces a new family of multivariate distributions based on Gram-Charlier and Edgeworth expansions. This family encompasses many of the univariate seminonparametric densities proposed in the financial econometrics as marginal distributions of the different formulations. Within this family, we focus on the specifications that guarantee positivity so obtaining a well-defined multivariate density. We compare different "positive" multivariate distributions of the family with the multivariate Edgeworth-Sargan, Normal and Student’s t in an in- and out-sample framework for financial returns data. Our results show that the proposed specifications provide a quite reasonably good performance being so of interest for applications involving the modelling and forecasting of heavy-tailed distributions.Multivariate distributions; Gram-Charlier and Edgeworth-Sargan densities; MGARCH models; financial data

Global economy dynamics? Panel data approach to spillover effects

    Get PDF
Over the past year, there has been considerable debate about how the slowing of the United States and other major developed economies affects output growth across the world. The main purpose of this paper is to establish relevant conclusions on how the U.S., Euro Area and Japan gross domestic product growth affect international business cycle fluctuations, with the objective of identifying the main factors that influence spillovers into other countries. Using panel data regression, we conclude that output growth in the U.S. and Euro area are significant in explaining output growth across countries. Depending on the specifications, trade linkages play a significant role while financial linkages with respect to the three regions does not (except in one particular specification). There are signs of potential omitted variable bias in some regression indicating that some relevant variables have not been taken into account. There is also clear evidence of a structural change in the transmission mechanism of shocks after 1985 – since when shocks have become more country-specific.Output Growth, Trade and Financial Linkages, Structural Break, Cross- Section Panel Data.
