Sandokan of Malludu. The Historical Background of a Novel Cycle set in Borneo by the Italian Author Emilio Salgari
Bianca Maria Gerlich
It was the object of this article to discover possible historical traces of the basic structure of the novel-cycle Ciclo dei Pirati della Malesia by Emilio Salgari, in particular the historical existence of its chief protagonist Sandokan. Since historical facts corresponding to the setting of the cycle can in fact be found, it is clear that Salgari's novel should not be read as mere fictional literature but rather as literature with an historical background. Besides some rather general historical facts and circumstances, even some of the details turn out to be historical. The names of persons, places and constellations that were well-known in Europe such as "James Brooke", "Sarawak" and "Labuan" figure, but so do "Sandokan" and the "flag of the tiger" which were known at the time to a rather small group of people in Sabah. Salgari's dates are correct, too : Le Tigri di Mompracem starts at the end of 1849, and the original version La Tigre della Malesia in 1847 ; the battle of Malludu in fact took place in 1845. In the Yanez-passage we are informed that Sandokan was resident on the north coast of Borneo for a few years before he settled down in Mompracem.
Perhaps the fundamental messages of the cycle correspond more to historical reality than some reports by European contemporaries or historians do. The Sandokan' s fight for freedom against the European colonizers reflects historical reality. Salgari portrayed history from the perspective of the "losers" and not from that of the "winners", unlike what one finds in most European literature of the last century. His protagonist, who belongs to the weaker party, is positively valued, whereas in official British historiography Malludu is obviously viewed negatively.
However, it should be realized that only the basic structure of the novel coincides in part with historical events and persons, whereas vast parts - especially the immanent actions - belong to fiction. The cycle shows a form of virtual historical reality : Salgari worked his story out upon a historical frame, the polarity between "Sandokan" and "the British". The tension between this poles is essentially determined through the efforts of the colonizers. A detailed examination of historical analogies in the immanent parts of the cycle, or concerning Salgari's descriptions on Bornean customs, social relations and other aspects could bring forth further interesting results. The introductory question concerning the place of historicity in Salgari's Ciclo dei Pirati della Malesia can however be answered positively even on the basis of our preliminary examination. The three symbols "Mompracem", and the "flag of the tiger" and "Sandokan" did exist and were handed down orally and in writing. But more relevant perhaps is the connection between "Sandokan" and the "flag of the tiger" through Sandokan's native country Malludu. He lived there and was indeed very probably in a position of authority. The emblem of Malludu was the flag of the tiger. Malludu was mentioned by Salgari in what may be seen as a basically correct historical context. His fundamental historical message privileges the "Malay" and not the "European" side. Salgari's anti-colonial interpretation thus finds interesting echoes in the modern discussion of nineteenth-century colonial expansion in Southeast Asia.Gerlich Bianca Maria. Sandokan of Malludu. The tragedies of Maria Rosa Galvez de Cabrera (1768-1806).
The aim of this thesis is to advance an understanding of the author's corpus of tragic plays, eight in total. Chapter One explores continuities and changes in Galvez's critical
fortunes in the last two hundred years. Chapter Two examines the author's commitment to write tragedy in the light of notions of the genre in eighteenth-century Spain, situating
Galvez's innovation and experimentation with generic constants both ancient and modern in the context of the contemporary debate on theatre. The remaining eight chapters are dedicated to analyses of aesthetic, structural and
thematic elements of each play: Afi-Bek, set in Mameluke Egypt, whose ensemble cast of characters and uncompromising portrayal of cruelty and barbarity perplexed contemporary critics; Safil, which dramatised the final hours in the life of this Biblical figure in the uni-personal melologo format; Safo, which depicted the Greek poet's passionate yet solemn act of suicide; Florinda, which interrogated the legend of the Moorish Conquest of Spain; Blanca de Rossi, in which elements of the emergent Gothic style animated the familiar
tragic dilemma between public duty and personal honour;
Amnon, which recast the Biblical story of Amnon and Tamar and engaged with earlier treatments by Calderon de la Barca and Tirso de Molina; Zinda which addressed issues of slavery, colonialism and nationhood, drawing on elements and techniques associated with sentimental comedy; La delirante, in which Galvez approached the historical account of the rivalry between Tudor and Stuart, through the character of Leonor, Mary Stuart's daughter. The systematic analysis of these plays reveals Galvez as a self-conscious and skilful tragedian, able to fuse the conventions of ancient models of tragedy with the devices of new dramatic and literary forms to create a body of tragic writing which is at once experimental, innovative and essentially classicising
La scoperta della Baia di Napoli attraverso i Campi Phlegraei di Sir William Hamilton
The cultural landscape is interpreted as a complex system, on a territory scale, where accurate, natural and artificial elements stand along with resources, systems and networks. In all of these elements it is essential to find the relationship among those who built this landscape over time and those who respect and enjoy it: all this happens through the relationship among the cultures of all the peo- ple involved. The recognition of the cultural landscape allows its promotion as well as the improvement of its inhabitant identity and of their role in the transformation process.
The description of Naples and its bay is plenty of words and images that allow us to trace its evolution, development and trans- formation. It was the favourite destination of the Grand Tour trav- ellers, where the Neapolitan ‘subject’ led to the recognition of a specific Neapolitan landscape painting. On the other hand, just in the early 17th century the idea of landscape began to develop and just in the second half of 18th century the iconography is recognized as science, until the iconography of landscape was defined. Between the landscape painting linked to the educational journey and the job of the German naturalist Von Humboldt, who intro- duced geography as a scientific discipline with his work, where the landscape turned from an aesthetical view into a scientific one, we can find a work that is a little-known out of the Neapolitan artistic context, that is Campi Phlegraei. Observations on the Volcanoes of the two Sicilies by sir William Hamilton (1776-1779). This is an ex- traordinary work where the author, British ambassador in Naples, points out Campi Phlegraei according to the ancient definition of “lands burnt by fire”, that is the whole Neapolitan territory corre- sponding to the bay of Naples up to its most internal areas. It is an incredible work, where this English intellectual tries to reveal all the mysteries of the Vesuvius and the other volcanoes, and where he applies the techniques of the geologic stratigraphy and volcanol- ogy for the first time. This small book consists of the letters Hamilton wrote to the Royal Society in London. Particularly interesting are 54 watercolour engravings by Pietro Fabris, depicting this territory in great detail. This work, foreseeing the idea of reading places and landscape as a mixture of knowledge and perceptions, can represent a hint that supports the reinterpretation of the actual state of the territory so as to find the values and potentials to start from for an aware action of maintenance, fruition and communication of the territory, in compliance with the peculiarities of the cultural land- scape which it is part of
Forecast horizon of 5th – 6th – 7th long wave and short-period of contraction in economic cycles
The purpose of this essay is to determine the forecast horizon of the fifth, sixth and seventh long wave. As the period of each long wave can change according to the data, it has been used a deterministic approach, based on historical chronologies of USA and UK economies worked out by several scholars, to determine average timing, period and forecast error of future long waves. In addition, the analysis shows that long waves have average upwave period longer than average downwave one. This result is also confirmed by US Business Cycles that have average contractions shorter than expansions phase over time.Forecast Horizon, Long Waves, Kondratieff Waves, Business Cycles, Asymmetric Path
Metrics for driving political economy of energy and growth
Energy metrics is the development of a whole new theoretical framework for the conception and measurement of energy and economic performances, energy efficiency and productivity improvements with important political economy implications consistent with the best use of all natural and economic resources. The purpose of this research is to present some vital energy indicators based on magnitude and scale of energy weakness, GDP per barrel that is an indicator of energy productivity and barrels per capita that is an indicator of energy efficiency. Energy metrics can support policy maker to monitor energy system of countries in order to design effective strategy and political economy focused to increase the competitive advantage of countries in modern economies.Energy metrics, Energy productivity, Energy efficiency, Energy systems
Predicting strategic change of public research institutions under unstable negative growth
The purpose of this paper is to forecast and analyse, by a demographic perspective, the organizational behaviour of public research labs. The research focuses on the biggest Italian public research body. Demographic models of growth, based on different human resource policies, show the uncertain and retrogressive evolutionary change of Italian public research bodies that would halve their research personnel over the forecast horizon. These results provide vital information to the public management about the weaknesses and environmental threats in order to support decisions for improving the strategic change and survival of public research institutions over time.Organizational Studies, Forecasting, Public Research Institutions, Internal Demography
Possible technological determinants and primary energy resources of future long waves
The purpose of this paper is to conjecture the possible underlying technological determinants of future long waves, based on prominent studies of scholars and leading forecasting companies; in particular, this research assumes the converging of nano-bio-info-cogno technologies to be the foundation of 5th and 6th economic cycles, whereas the future technological revolution that may underpin the 7th long wave is assumed to be Faster-Than-Light technologies. The positive effects of these future technological revolutions on worldwide economic system are a high increase of productivity, employment rate, consumption and economic growth that lead to longer, happier, and healthier living as well as general well-being.Long Waves, Technological Revolution, Forecasting, Foresight
