Quality assessment of TanDEM-X Raw DEMs oriented to a fusion with CartoSAT-1 DEMs

This paper addresses a quality assessment of TanDEM-X standard Raw DEMs, with a resolution of 12 meters, for three different terrain configurations: urban areas, moderate topography and complex topography. The analysis is performed in the geospatial and in the spectral domain. Beside TanDEM-X, the same analysis is also carried out for CartoSAT-1 and LiDAR DEMs. The latter one is used as a reference. Nevertheless, the focus is centered on TanDEM-X, whose geometric limitations and their impacts on the DEM are analyzed here in detail. How the DEM appears in layover, shadow and phase unwrapping error areas is one of the objectives of the paper. The chosen test site is around Terrassa/Barcelona (Spain), offering all kinds of terrain variations. The final scope of the analysis is to learn about the potentials and the limitations of the two systems, radar (TanDEM-X) and optical (CartoSAT-1), in a way to optimally fuse them and to create an enhanced DEM. A simple fusion processing chain, based on a weighted average depending on the quality of the DEMs adapted to the local geometry, is tested. First results show that in urban and complex terrain areas the improvements are limited, mainly due to the previously analyzed geometrical issues, whereas in moderate terrain areas the enhancement is significant, with a drop in the RMSE of about 25% for TanDEM-X and 30% for CartoSAT-1

Non-nominal Experimental Bistatic SAR Acquisitions with TanDEM-X

TanDEM-X is a high-resolution interferometric mission with the main goal of providing a global and unprecedentedly accurate digital elevation model (DEM) of the Earth surface by means of single-pass X-band SAR interferometry. Despite its usual quasi-monostatic configuration, TanDEM-X is the first genuinely bistatic SAR system in space. During its monostatic commissioning phase, the system has been mainly operated in pursuit monostatic mode. However, some pioneering bistatic SAR experiments with both satellites commanded in non-nominal modes have been conducted with themain purpose of testing the performance of both space and ground segments in very demanding scenarios. In particular, this paper reports about the first bistatic acquisition and the first single-pass interferometric (mono/bistatic) acquisition with TanDEM-X, addressing their innovative aspects and focussing on the analysis of the experimental results. Even in the absence of essential synchronisation and calibration information, bistatic images and interferograms with similar quality to pursuit monostatic have been obtained

The study of literary style among Syriac writers is hardly a well-trodden subject, but this volume by Haefeli (his “Habilitationsschrift”) provides a model for such an investigation of an individual author. Drawing on the more progressed fields of Greek and Roman and Arabic rhetoric, he presents Aphrahat’s writing style in terms of a large number of stylistic categories, such as word order, sentence structure, repetition, synonyms, the careful placing of biblical citations, irony, sarcasm, oxymoron, hyperbole, tropes, imagery, and others. Naturally, the work is brimming with examples from Aphrahat’s Demonstrations, both in Syriac and in German. The end of the work includes a useful list of Greek and Persian loanwords in Aphrahat. This volume will repay close study for readers interested in the “how” of early Syriac writing and in the way early Syriac Christianity was presented
