The Effect of Proofreading on the Reading of General and Scientific Texts
Izhodišča. V magistrski nalogi kvantitativno raziskujemo vpliv lekture na kakovost besedila, osredotočamo pa se predvsem na velikost učinka lekture na dojemanje različnih lastnosti besedila ob branju. Metodologija. Izvedli smo randomizirano enostransko slepo kvantitativno raziskavo z vprašalnikom, v kateri smo poskušali ustvariti čim bolj »naravno okolje« branja in v njem opredeliti učinek lektoriranja na dojemanje lastnosti izbranega publicističnega besedila. Introduction. We tried to quantify the effect of proofreading on the perception of a selected journalistic text. Methodology. We conducted a randomized one-sided blind quantitative survey with a questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the final sample. For the analysis, we used the t-test for two independent samples and the χ2 test. For the standardised effect size estimation, we used Cohen\u27s d. We considered the Bonferroni correction, and the results were considered statistically significant with p < 0.00083. Results. The cohort consisted of 190 subjects (high school students and students of Medicine and Slovene Studies), who completed the questionnaire in seven separate administrations. Proofreading had the greatest effect on the orthographic adequacy of the text (difference of 2.99 ± 0.210 points on a 7-point scale, Cohen\u27s d = 2.07, 95% CI = 1.722.42, p < 0.0000). It also had a large effect on the quality of the text, and on the features related to linguistic correctness and perception of the author (his/her education, and professional and linguistic knowledge). Most of the characteristics studied belonged to the medium-effect category, while only one characteristic (the amount of information in the text) belonged to the low-effect category. Proofreading had a statistically insignificant effect on the readers’ perception of where the text was published, whether it was peer-reviewed, and whether it had been proofread or not. Discussion. We found that proofreading has a very large effect on the quality of the text, its linguistic correctness, and the perception of the author of the text, a large effect on the informativeness of the text, and a medium effect on the interestingness and the scientificity of the text. The research opens up new possibilities for shedding light on the field
Juan Rivera, un traduttore militante nella Spagna del Triennio Liberale
The aim of this paper is to investigate the figure of Juan Rivera, a Spanish translator working during the Liberal Triennium, through the analysis of prefaces he added to his three translations of important Enlightenment texts one of them being On Crimes and Punishments by Cesare Beccaria Bonesana. Since much of its fortune depended on the reception of its translations, first of all the French one by André Morellet, this paper analyses other translators’ prefaces, namely that of Morellet himself, the first anonymous English translation and the first Spanish one, in order to highlight correlations between the historical and political context and the translation method employed. Morellet, for instance, transformed the philosophical Italian essay into a legal treatise as he was guided by the idea of writing a useful tool for the French Nation and the whole of humanity, as he declared in his “Preface of the translator”. Juan Rivera, author of the second translation into Spanish of On Crimes and Punishments, seems to have followed his example: in his “Preface” he declared a manifest willingness to influence the political debate of his age (the Liberal Triennium, 1820-23) and, more precisely, to offer a useful instrument to legislators who were about to approve the first Spanish Criminal Code. He did the same with the two other translations he published in the same short liberal period, and with the same publisher (Imprenta de D. Fermín Villalpando), that is, the Spanish translations of Scienza della legislazione (The Science of Legislation) by Gaetano Filangieri and the Traité d’économie politique, by Jean-Baptiste Say, in this case, from French. Through the analysis of some passages from peritextual items, such as prefaces and open letters addressed to the Spanish National Congress, we attempt to draw the profile of this activist translator operating during an age full of optimistic expectations of the progress of society

Fluorescent In Situ Staining and Flow Cytometric Procedures as New Pre-Diagnostic Tests for Sialidosis, GM1 Gangliosidosis and Niemann–Pick Type C
Background: Early diagnosis is essential in the field of lysosomal storage disorders for the proper management of patients and for starting therapies before irreversible damage occurs, particularly in neurodegenerative conditions. Currently, specific biomarkers for the diagnosis of lysosomal storage disorders are lacking in routine laboratory practice, except for enzymatic tests, which are available only in specialized metabolic centers. Recently, we established a method for measuring and verifying changes in GM1 ganglioside levels in peripheral blood lymphocytes in patients with GM1 gangliosidosis. However, fresh blood is not always available, and using frozen/thawed lymphocytes can lead to inaccurate results. Methods: We used frozen/thawed fibroblasts obtained from stored biopsies to explore the feasibility of fluorescent imaging and flow-cytometric methods to track changes in storage materials in fibroblasts from patients with three lysosomal neurodegenerative conditions: GM1 gangliosidosis, Sialidosis, and Niemann–Pick type C. We used specific markers for each pathology. Results and Conclusions: We demonstrated that with our methods, it is possible to clearly distinguish the levels of accumulated metabolites in fibroblasts from affected and unaffected patients for all the three pathologies considered. Our methods proved to be rapid, sensitive, unbiased, and potentially applicable to other LSDs
Combination of Asymmetric Organo- and Biocatalysis in Flow Processes and Comparison with their Analogous Batch Syntheses
Schober L, Tonin F, Hanefeld U, Gröger H. Combination of Asymmetric Organo- and Biocatalysis in Flow Processes and Comparison with their Analogous Batch Syntheses. European Journal of Organic Chemistry . 2022;(7): e202101035.A sequential-type as well as a tandem-type chemoenzymatic flow cascade combining an organocatalytic aldol reaction and a biocatalytic reduction to form stereoselectively a 1,3-diol with two stereogenic centers were developed. Initially, a comprehensive screening of 24 alcohol dehydrogenases was carried out and the identified candidates were applied in different multistep flow cascades. All four stereoisomers of the desired 1,3-diol product are accessible via a sequential flow approach with product formation-related conversions of up to 76% over two steps, isolated yields of up to 64% and enantiomeric excess of >99% in all cases. In addition, a tandem-type flow process, performing both reaction steps simultaneously, was established leading to 51 % conversion with >99% ee and 8:1 d.r. and representing a combination of the fields of asymmetric chemo-catalysis, biocatalysis and flow chemistry
Light-Driven Enzymatic Decarboxylation of Fatty Acids
The photoenzymatic decarboxylation of fatty acids to alkanes is proposed as an alternative approach for the synthesis of biodiesel. By using a recently discovered photodecarboxylase from Chlorella variabilis NC64A (CvFAP) we demonstrate the irreversible preparation of alkanes from fatty acids and triglycerides. Several fatty acids and their triglycerides are converted by CvFAP in near-quantitative yield and exclusive selectivity upon illumination with blue light. Very promising turnover numbers of up to 8000 were achieved in this proof-of-concept study.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.BT/Biocatalysi
3D Printing Silk-Based Bioresorbable Piezoelectric Self-Adhesive Holey Structures for In Vivo Monitoring on Soft Tissues
[Image: see text] Flexible and biocompatible adhesives with sensing capabilities can be integrated onto human body and organ surfaces, characterized by complex geometries, thus having the potential to sense their physiological stimuli offering monitoring and diagnosis of a wide spectrum of diseases. The challenges in this innovative field are the following: (i) the coupling method between the smart adhesive and the soft human substrates, (ii) the bioresorbable behavior of the material, and (iii) the electrical exchange with the substrate. Here, we introduce a multifunctional composite by mixing silk fibroin, featuring piezoelectric properties, with a soluble plant-derived polyphenol (i.e., chestnut tannin) modified with graphene nanoplatelets. This material behaves as a glue on different substrates and gives rise to high elongation at break, conformability, and adhesive performances to gastrointestinal tissues in a rat model and favors the printability via extrusion-based 3D printing. Exploiting these properties, we designed a bioresorbable 3D printed flexible and self-adhesive piezoelectric device that senses the motility once applied onto a phantom intestine and the hand gesture by signal translation. Experimental results also include the biocompatibility study using gastrointestinal cells. These findings could have applicability in animal model studies, and, thanks to the bioresorbable behavior of the materials, such an adhesive device could be used for monitoring the motility of the gastrointestinal tract and for the diagnosis of motility disorders

Tajemnice Tajemnicy lorda Singelworth
This article presents the figure of the Venetian historical improviser Tonin di Bonagrazia, one of the protagonists of Norwid’s novel Tajemnica lorda Singelworth [Lord Singelworth’s Secret]. The author reached the article mentioned by the poet in the footnote to the novella and image of the Italian actor and she put together the knowledge of the era with Norwid’s artistic creation. In the second part of the article, the author also pointed to the yet hypothetical inspiration for the title character of the novella – presumably the Greek poet Dionisios Solomos.W artykule została bliżej zaprezentowana postać historycznego improwizatora weneckiego Tonin di Bonagrazia, jednego z bohaterów noweli Norwida Tajemnica lorda Singelworth.
