    Letter from Hubert Phillips to American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California, enclosing checks for $57 from F. C. Kellogg, Arthur E. Geschke, Claus Bertelsen, and Hubert Phillips. The letter states that the checks represent "the contributions of about twenty-five people made at a dinner held here recently to consider the phases of the status of citizens of Japanese ancestry and is to be applied specifically to helping prosecute the case of Miss Mitsuye Endo. Mr. F. C. Kellogg of the Fowler High School faculty was the author of the idea and deserves the credit for raising the enclosed contribution."The ACLU-Northern California case file records contain legal documents and correspondence pertaining to the case Ex parte Mitsuye Endo (1944), in which the United States Supreme court unanimously ruled that the federal government could not indefinitely detain United States citizens who were loyal to the government.     Dynamic Probabilities of Restrictions in State Space Models: An Application to the Phillips Curve

    Empirical macroeconomists are increasingly using models (e.g. regressions or Vector Autoregressions) where the parameters vary over time. State space methods are frequently used to specify the evolution of parameters in such models. In any application, there are typically restrictions on the parameters that a researcher might be interested in. This motivates the question of how to calculate the probability that a restriction holds at a point in time without assuming the restriction holds at all (or any other) points in time. This paper develops methods to answer this question. In particular, the principle of the Savage-Dickey density ratio is used to obtain the time-varying posterior probabilities of restrictions. We use our methods in a macroeconomic application involving the Phillips curve. Macroeconomists are interested in whether the long-run Phillips curve is vertical. This is a restriction for which we can calculate the posterior probability using our methods. Using U.S. data, the probability that this restriction holds tends to be fairly high, but decreases slightly over time (apart from a slight peak in the late 1970s). We also calculate the probability that another restriction, that the NAIRU is not identi…ed, holds. The probability that it holds fluctuates over time with most evidence in favor of the restriction occurring after 1990

    Simple drag prediction strategies for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle’s hull shape

    The range of an AUV is dictated by its finite energy source and minimising the energy consumption is required to maximise its endurance. One option to extend the endurance is by obtaining the optimum hydrodynamic hull shape with balancing the trade-off between computational cost and fluid dynamic fidelity. An AUV hull form has been optimised to obtain low resistance hull. Hydrodynamic optimisation of hull form has been carried out by employing five parametric geometry models with a streamlined constraint. Three Genetic Algorithm optimisation procedures are applied by three simple drag predictions which are based on the potential flow method.     The use of computational fluid dynamics to assess the hull resistance of concept autonomous underwater vehicles

    Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUV’s) provide an important tool for collecting detailed scientific information from the oceans depths. The hull resistance of an AUV is an important factor in determining the powering requirements and range of the vehicle. This paper discusses the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to determine the hull resistance of three existing AUV’s, of differing shape and size. The predictions are compared with available experimental data and good agreement found. This work has demonstrated that with use of suitable shape parameterisation it is possible to carry out concept design evaluation using a RANS flow solver

    Texturalism and Performance - Adorno's Theory of Truth

    This thesis establishes a new reading of Adorno’s theory of truth. I argue that Adorno posits truth as being mutually constituted by dialectical philosophical texts, and the agent’s cognitive engagement and ‘performance’ of these texts. This reading is founded on an interpretation of Adorno as a transcendental philosopher, who grounds the transcendental necessity of concepts in the requirements of self-preservation. The agent’s performative interaction with the text is held to provide access to truth by virtue of interfering with the conceptual mediation of the agent’s experience. I go on to argue that this conception of truth is also at play in Adorno’s philosophy of art. I claim that the artwork, for Adorno, presents a dialectically constituted whole which, when performatively engaged with by the agent, disrupts the conceptual mediation of his or her experience, and provides access to the truth. While I show that Adorno considers his theory of truth content for art and philosophy to be unified, I also demonstrate that Adorno nonetheless maintains the differentiation between art and philosophy. I do this by providing a new interpretation of the relationship which Adorno draws between aesthetic autonomy and heteronomy

    The design dimensions of e-learning

    The currently popular term e-learning is shown to have several meanings which confuse discussion about a new technology which is finding widespread international use in a range of educational sectors. This paper analyses the characteristics of e-learning applications, and proposes a set of four design dimensions which could be considered when designing and assessing the suitability of e-learning applications. The applicability of the four proposed dimensions, and their shortcomings, are discussed in detail, and found to be justifiable

    Designing evaluation and research into educational initiatives: The global perspectives program

    We describe the planning for evaluation research using a curriculum initiative project as a case study. The project was to design a generic Global Perspectives (GP) learning program to embed in first year units of study offered by the Faculty of Health Science. The pilot phase of the GP program delivery was used to explore and define an educational evaluation research (EER) plan that addresses, 1) the GP program design; 2) its implementation and ongoing refinement and, 3) the management of the project. The GP program is presented from an e-learning design perspective and its EER plan is based on the design framework in (Phillips, McNaught et al. 2012). The paper provides a high level view of the EER plan for the GP program over each stage of the design life cycle and for the evaluation of project management. The paper discusses the rationale for an EER plan, the book as a guide for research and practice in evaluating e-learning and the relationship of the GP program to learning, teaching and leading for the future
