NMR of solid phosphorus-containing compounds
Solid-state NMR techniques have been applied to the structure and dynamic characterisation of a range of phosphorus-containing compounds. Comparisons have been made within several series of compounds as well as studies of individual molecules with interesting NMR properties, whether dynamic, structural or magnetic. Spectral features such as shielding anisotropy, the high sensitivity of phosphorus and its large chemical shift range are extensively utilised in this work. Triple-channel, fluorine-observe and variable-temperature spectrometer facilities at different magnetic field strengths have been explored to give as much complementary information as possible. For both chlorinated and fluorinated diazadiphosphetidines, motional properties have been examined and the indirect spin-spin and dipolar interactions, together with shielding have been studied. Spectra from the NMR-active nuclei in these cyclic dimers have been used to compare effects of differing substituents on NMR properties. The bowl-shaped' molecules, calix[4] resorcinols with phosphorus functionality modifying the upper rim, constitute the other major group of compounds studied. These are of interest in inclusion chemistry. As well as simple one-dimensional NMR characterisation of solid-state calix[4]resorcinol compounds, interesting two-dimensional correlation results have helped with the assignment and conformational conclusions. A qualitative and quantitative study of a co-crystal of triphenylphosphine oxide and phenol was made to establish the nature of the disorder observed, but undefined, in an X-ray structural investigation of the hydrogen-bonded network. Complementary NMR techniques were used to extend the temperature range over which the rate of any motion can be characterised. Bandshape analysis, Tip measurement and selective polarisation inversion experiments have proved to be accurate in different regions of a variable temperature study. Other compounds explored were those which showed interesting solid-state NMR results, for example, the complexities of cross-polarisation dynamics between two abundant spins in inorganic phosphates, and compounds with potential solid-state applications. These include (i) phosphorus-containing compounds with chlorine and fluorinated aromatic substituents and (ii) complexes with transition metals. Comparison with single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction has also been exploited. In some cases, data have been produced, and in others the applicability of a theoretical approach has led to other conclusions

High specificity automatic function assignment for enzyme sequences
The number of protein sequences being deposited in databases is currently growing rapidly as a result of large-scale high throughput genome sequencing efforts. A large proportion of these sequences have no experimentally determined structure. Also, relatively few have high quality, specific, experimentally determined functions.
Due to the time, cost and technical complexity of experimental procedures for the determination of protein function this situation is unlikely to change in the near future. Therefore, one of the major challenges for bioinformatics is the ability to automatically assign highly accurate, high-specificity functional information to these unknown protein sequences. As yet this problem has not been successfully solved to a level both acceptable in terms of detailed accuracy and reliability for use as a basis for detailed biological analysis on a genome wide, automated, high-throughput scale.
This research thesis aims to address this shortfall through the provision and benchmarking of methods that can be used towards improving the accuracy of high-specificity protein function prediction from enzyme sequences. The datasets used in these studies are multiple alignments of evolutionarily related protein sequences, identified through the use of BLAST sequence database searches.
Firstly, a number of non-standard amino acid substitution matrices were used to re-score the benchmark multiple sequence alignments. A subset of these matrices were shown to improve the accuracy of specific function annotation, when compared to both the original BLAST sequence similarity ordering and a random sequence selection model.
Following this, two established methods for the identification of functional specificity determining amino acid residues (fSDRs) were used to identify regions within the aligned sequences that are functionally and phylogenetically informative. These localised sequence regions were then used to re-score the aligned sequences and provide an assessment of their ability to improve the specific functional annotation of the benchmark sequence sets.
Finally, a machine learning approach (support vector machines) was followed to evaluate the possibility of identifying fSDRs, which improve the annotation accuracy, directly from alignments of closely related protein sequences without prior knowledge of their specific functional sub-types. The performance of this SVM based method was then assessed by applying it to the automatic functional assignment of a number of well studied classes of enzymes

In the enormous collection of cross-cultural data that have been published during the last few decades it is difficult to perceive patterns. There is a clear need for systematizing the vast amount of cross-cultural studies and for developing models that explain cross-cultural differences in psychology. Two methods of cross-cultural meta-analysis can be distinguished. First, the instrument-based method of comparing data for one instrument across countries is suitable for instruments which have been administered in many countries. Second, a domain-based meta-analysis used a thematic domain from which culture-comparative studies are sampled instead of one specific instrument or method

A large-scale biomass bulk terminal
This research explores the possibility of a large-scale bulk terminal in West Europe dedicated to handle solid and liquid biomass materials. Various issues regarding the conceptual design of such a terminal have been investigated and demonstrated in this research: the potential biomass materials that will be the major international trade flows in the future, the characteristics of these potential biomass materials, the interaction between the material properties and terminal equipment, the perspective from terminal logistic process, and the terminal configuration. To this day no such a terminal exists yet. Questo articolo nasce dall’unione delle relazioni tenute dall’autore nel corso dei convegni “Langobardorum Nummorum Doctrina” (2018) e “In Sanctorum Nummis Effigies” (2019). Dopo un’attenta ricerca viene mostrato il percorso dell’iconografia micaelica nella monetazione medievale e il suo cammino attraverso l’Europa. L’effige del santo raffigurata in primis dai Gepidi e poi da Longobardi e Bizantini, si diffonderà in tutta l’Europa medievale, dal Regno di Sicilia fino alla Danimarca. Il lavoro, frutto non solo di una ricerca numismatica, ma anche storica e artistica, vuole essere un punto di partenza di uno studio più complesso che l’autore sta compiendo sulla raffigurazione del santo nelle monete medievali.This article was born from the union of the reports given by the author during the conferences “Langobardorum Nummorum Doctrina” (2018) and “In Sanctorum Nummis Effigies” (2019). After careful research, the path of Michaelic iconography in medieval coinage and its journey through Europe is demonstrated. The effigy of the saint depicted primarily by the Gepids, and then by the Lombards and the Byzantines, spread throughout medieval Europe, from the Kingdom of Sicily to Denmark. This work, the result not only of numismatic but also of historical and artistic research, is intended to be a starting point for a more complex study that the author is carrying out on the depiction of the saint in medieval coins

© The Author(s) 2019. This chapter introduces the conceptual underpinning and aims of the book, and outlines its content. It discusses how, although the doctorate represents the most advanced form of adult education and qualification, and considerable effort, research and training has been expended on the process of completing a doctorate, there has been far less interest or focus on the lived experience of doing one. It describes how, and why, this book focuses on the human dimension that underpins the highest level of formal learning achievable. This chapter also outlines the volume’s unique organisation around the themes and concerns that students themselves have identified as centrally important to successfully completing their research degrees. The introduction describes how, from assessing the self to working with others, from building resilience to developing networks, and considering how ethical conduct permeates a researcher’s practice, this book takes readers-both students and supervisors-on a journey towards successful doctoral learning. It also describes how, while each section is framed by ideas and concepts suggested by the editors, who are experienced doctoral supervisors, the core content of the book is purposely student-driven and authored, in order to provide an authentic account of the doctoral experience
